EXPERT INSIGHTS: YOUR INSURANCE FAQS ANSWERED

Insurance can feel full of jargon and fine print that’s out to get you. But it doesn’t have to be. At dotsure.co.za, we believe in keeping things clear and simple, from submitting claims to how we answer your insurance FAQs.

What Is Insurance in Simple Terms?

    Understanding the Purpose of Insurance

Insurance is basically a safety net. You pay a monthly premium, and if something unexpected happens, such as a car accident, a sick pet, or a mechanical failure, your insurer helps to cover the cost.

    Different Types of Insurance Explained

    • Car Insurance
Cover can include accidents, theft, hijacking, fire, and sometimes even hail. It also protects you if you cause damage to someone else’s car.
    • Pet Insurance
Helps to take the bite out of vet bills when your fur-baby, feathered friend or scaly sidekick is sick, injured, or needs surgery. Cover can include accidents, illnesses, and sometimes even preventative or routine treatments.
    • Warranty Cover
A warranty protects you when your car’s parts fail due to a mechanical or electrical fault. We cover over 60 components for repairs or replacements.

Car Insurance and Warranty Questions Answered

    What Does Car Insurance Cover?

Depending on the plan you choose, cover can include:

    • Accidental damage or loss.
    • Third-party liability.
    • Fire.
    • Theft, attempted theft or hijacking.
    • Non-standard accessories.

What Is a Car Warranty and How Is It Different?

A warranty isn’t about accidents. It’s cover for your car parts that protects you from the hefty price of mechanical or electrical failures. If your engine, gearbox, or electronics give in, warranty cover helps with the repair bills.

    Here’s a quick comparison

    Feature  Car Insurance  Car Warranty
Covers  Accidents, theft, fire, natural disasters  Mechanical/electrical failures
Mandatory  Required if you’re financing a car  Optional extra once your manufacturer warranty expires
Claim Process  Usually after accidents  Usually after breakdowns
Example  Pays for damage after a crash  Pays for new turbocharger if it fails

Essentially, insurance acts as a buffer, helping you to handle life’s surprises without a major setback.

    Why Do I Need Insurance?

Even if you consider yourself careful or lucky, things can go wrong at any moment. Without insurance, these events could cause you to pay thousands out of pocket. Insurance allows you to recover quickly and focus on what matters most

    The Benefits of Insurance

Having insurance offers several benefits beyond financial protection.

    • Peace of Mind: You can focus on your work, family, or hobbies without worrying about potential setbacks.

  • HOW TO IDENTIFY FAKE NEWS IN INSURANCE

HOW TO IDENTIFY FAKE NEWS IN INSURANCE

Insurance is one of those industries where people have a lot to say. The challenge? Not everything you read online is true. Just like any other hot topic, fake news in insurance spreads quickly on social media, blogs, and even WhatsApp groups. Some of it is harmless, but sometimes it can mislead people into making poor financial decisions.

The good news? With a little know-how, you can spot the difference between fact and fiction.

    RELATED: COMMON INSURANCE TERMS EXPLAINED

Spotting Fake News in Insurance: Red Flags to Watch For

Fake news is basically information presented as truth, but designed to mislead or manipulate. In insurance, this could look like:

    • Allegations about how “all insurers deny every claim” (not true)
    • Fake updates about new laws or rules that don’t exist
    • Overly dramatic headlines meant to scare you into buying something.

When reading anything insurance-related, ask yourself: Does this sound a little too shocking to be true? If the answer is yes, dig deeper.

Check the Source: Reliable vs Risky

Not all sources are equal. Reputable insurers, consumer watchdogs, and trusted financial sites are far more reliable than random blogs or viral posts. If you’re unsure, ask:

    • Who published this content?
    • Do they have expertise in insurance?
    • Is the same information available on other trustworthy sites?

Insurance is full of jargon, but credible sources explain things clearly and factually instead of pushing fear or drama.

Avoiding Fake News on Social Media

Social media is where fake insurance news thrives.

    To protect yourself:

    • Pause before sharing. If it sounds shocking or unbelievable, check it first.
    • Look for original sources. Memes and screenshots are the most common culprits for misinformation.
    • Engage wisely. Often, people point out errors or scams in comment sections or reviews.

    Fact-Checking Tools That Actually Work

You don’t need to be an investigator to confirm what’s real. These websites make it simple.

    • FactCheck.org: A long-standing site that debunks rumours and hoaxes.

Bookmark them and use them whenever you feel that “wait, what?” moment.

    Deepfake AI and Misinformation

One of the latest threats is deepfake AI, which can create convincing fake videos or audio clips. Imagine a fake video of an “expert” saying your car warranty is invalid, or a made-up announcement about insurance law changes. These fakes can be tricky to spot, but they usually spread quickly through social channels before being debunked.

The best defence? Always double-check with a trusted insurer before believing what you see.

    Stay Smart, Stay Covered

Fake news is no longer just about politics or celebrity gossip, it’s also creeping into industries like insurance.

At dotsure.co.za, we believe in transparency and keeping things simple. If you’ve got questions about insurance and want facts you can trust, contact us today!

  • HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT INSURANCE POLICY

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT INSURANCE POLICY

Choosing an insurance policy can be overwhelming. There’s jargon, options galore, and plenty of fine print.

Here’s your no-nonsense guide on how to choose the right insurance for your needs, without losing your mind in the process.

    Understanding Your Insurance Needs

    Assessing Your Risk Profile

If you drive daily, live in a high-risk area, or have valuable assets, insurance becomes less of a ‘nice-to-have’ and more of a ‘must-have’.

    Evaluating Life Stage and Dependents

Your insurance needs will shift as your life changes. Single with a car and laptop? A basic policy might do. But if you’ve got kids, a home loan, and a family who depends on your income, your insurance game needs to level up accordingly.

    Short-Term vs Long-Term Needs

Short-term insurance (such as car, home, or pet insurance) helps cover the day-to-day risks. Long-term policies (such as life or disability cover) kick in for the big stuff. You may need both, and that’s okay.

RELATED: UNDERSTANDING SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERM INSURANCE

    Important Factors in Policy Comparison

    Premiums vs Coverage

Cheaper doesn’t always mean better. It’s tempting to go for the lowest monthly cost, but make sure you’re not sacrificing critical cover just to save a few bucks upfront.

    Exclusions and Limitations

The devil’s in the details. Make sure you know if you’re covered for wear-and-tear, pre-existing conditions, or specific high-risk scenarios.

    Claim Process and Support

A good policy is only as strong as the support you get when it matters. Look for an insurer with a reputation for quick, easy claims and solid customer service.

    Policy Terms and Renewability

Know when your cover starts, when it ends, and whether your premium might change over time. Some policies offer fixed terms; others are reviewed annually.

Mistakes to Avoid When Choosing Insurance

    Underinsuring or Overinsuring

Too little cover and you could be stuck footing the bill. Too much, and you might be paying for benefits you’ll never use. Try to find the sweet spot.

    Ignoring Fine Print

Don’t just click “I accept”. If the wording feels like legal spaghetti, ask your insurer to break it down for you.

    Choosing Based on Price Alone

Sure, budget matters. But how do people decide what kind of insurance they need? Consider the value of what you’re getting, not just what you’re paying.

  • TYPES OF INSURANCE TO PROTECT WHAT MATTERS

TYPES OF INSURANCE TO PROTECT WHAT MATTERS

Insurance is all about protecting the things (and people) you love. It helps soften the blow when the unexpected strikes, giving you peace of mind and a financial safety net. That’s why having the right type of insurance in place, matters.

    Most Common Types of Insurance

There are many types of insurance available, but these six top the list for most people in Mzansi:

    • Car insurance
    • Home or household insurance
    • Business insurance
    • Pet insurance
    • Life insurance
    • Health insurance

Each type serves a different purpose. Some can be required by law, while others are just plain smart to have.

Car Insurance: Keeping You on the Move

Your car is your ride to work, your weekend getaway machine, your family taxi. But with potholes, load-shedding traffic, and rising theft stats, your wheels need cover.

Car insurance protects you from financial hits after accidents, theft, or damage. In South Africa, you’ll typically choose between:

    • Comprehensive insurance: Covers most events including accidents, theft, fire, and more.
    • Third-party, fire and theft: A step down but still decent protection.
    • Third-party only: Covers accidental damage to someone else’s vehicle.

    Household Insurance: Sheltering Your Abode

Home is where your heart, and your biggest financial investment, lives. Building insurance protects the property itself (walls, roof, fixtures, etc.) from things like fire, floods, or natural disasters.

There’s also home contents insurance, which covers valuables inside your house such as electronics, furniture, appliances, and more.

    Business Insurance: Safeguard Your Livelihood

Whether you run a corner café or a nationwide logistics company, business insurance helps shield your hard work.

    Policies commonly include:

    • Property cover: For your premises and assets.
    • Theft cover: For stock or equipment.
    • Liability cover: If someone gets injured on your premises.
    • Vehicle cover: For business fleets or delivery vans.

Our customised business insurance gives you a safety net so you can focus on growing your success, not just surviving obstacles.

    Pet Insurance: Wholehearted Protection

Our pets are family. When they get sick or injured, vet bills can pile up fast. Pet insurance is one of the fastest-growing types of insurance in South Africa, for good reason.

Depending on the plan, pet insurance can help cover:

    • Accidents and emergencies
    • Treatment of illnesses
    • Chronic conditions and surgeries
    • Routine care and wellness (such as vaccinations or parasite control)

We offer different plans with dedicated cover to suit your pet’s needs.

Life Insurance: Providing for Loved Ones

While no one likes to think about it, life insurance is a powerful way to look after your loved ones when you no longer can. Your beneficiaries can receive a lump sum to help cover funeral costs, debt, education, and living expenses.

There are different types of life insurance, including:

    • Term life insurance: Cover for a set period.
    • Whole life insurance: Cover for life, often with cash value.
    • Funeral cover: Quick payout for burial costs.

    Health Insurance: Looking After You

Health insurance or medical aid helps cover medical expenses like doctor visits, hospital stays, surgeries, and chronic medications. In South Africa, private healthcare can be costly, and medical aid or hospital plans help take the edge off those bills.

  • WILL INSURANCE COVER NATURAL DISASTERS?

    WILL INSURANCE COVER NATURAL DISASTERS?

What Is Considered a Natural Disaster?

Natural disasters are large-scale events caused by natural forces beyond our control, such as floods, storms, fires, and earthquakes. These events can cause considerable damage to property and infrastructure, and loss of life. But, will insurance cover natural disasters or not? When it comes to your insurance policy, the term “Act of Nature” is often used with the key characteristic being that it is unpredictable and unpreventable. Let’s unpack your cover and “Acts of Nature” before a natural disaster strikes!

RELATED: HOW INSURANCE COMPANIES CALCULATE YOUR PREMIUMS

Common Natural Disasters in South Africa

    Floods

Flooding is a recurring issue, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. In 2022, Durban experienced catastrophic floods, resulting in over 400 fatalities and extensive damage to infrastructure and homes.

    Storms

We’re no stranger to storms: hailstorms with hail the size of golf balls in Johannesburg and gale-force winds in Port Elizabeth. South Africa has experienced severe storms that have damaged homes, cars, and crops, leading to significant financial loss.

    Fires

Remember the devastating Knysna fires in 2017? Wildfires are ruthless and can destroy vast areas of vegetation and property. Dry conditions and strong winds often fuel these fires.

    Earthquakes

While not common, South Africa has experienced earthquakes, such as the 2014 Orkney earthquake, which measured 5.5 on the Richter scale. A few tremors have also been felt in other parts of the country, and while rare, they can cause structural damage and pose risks to communities.

    Tornadoes

Tornadoes are rare but have occurred. Just this year, on February 18, 2025, Pretoria North was struck by a tornado that tore through buildings, uprooted trees, and caused severe damage to vehicles. Miraculously, no one was hurt.

What Disaster Is Often Not Covered by Insurance?

Not all insurance policies automatically cover “Acts of Nature”. Some natural disasters, such as floods or earthquakes, are often not covered under standard insurance policies. These typically require additional cover or specific policies. Always check your policy details to ensure you are protected.

Need help reviewing your current insurance policy? Contact us or log in to our 24/7 Manage Portal to get started.

What Affects Your Claim During a Natural Disaster?

Several factors can influence the success of your insurance claim after a natural disaster:

    • Your policy details: Go through your policy wording to ensure it includes cover for the specific disaster.
    • Maintenance and preventative measures: If you don’t take care of your property, damage that could have been avoided with regular property maintenance can lead to claim denials. Demonstrating that you’ve taken steps to mitigate risks can support your claim.
    • Documentation: Provide detailed damage records, including photos and receipts.
    • Prompt reporting: Report damages to your insurer as soon as possible.

How Do I Claim for a Natural Disaster?

If you’re affected by a natural disaster:

    1. Ensure safety: First, ensure you and everyone around you are safe after the natural disaster.
    2. Contact your insurer: Reach out to your insurance provider to report the incident.
    3. Document the damage: As mentioned above, take photographs and list all damages.
    4. Submit your info: Provide all necessary documentation and information as requested to your insurer.

At dotsure.co.za, we aim to make the claims process as smooth as possible. You can manage your policy, submit claims and upload supporting data through our online Manage Portal.

Does Your Insurance Policy Have You Covered for Natural Disasters?

WHAT IS INSURANCE EXCESS? HERE’S WHAT SOUTH AFRICANS NEED TO KNOW

What is insurance excess? It plays a crucial role in various insurance policies, whether for your car, home, or pet, shaping how much policyholders need to pay out of pocket when making a claim. At dotsure.co.za, we help you understand what it means, how it works, and how to reduce your out-of-pocket costs when you claim.

RELATED: INSURANCE EXPLAINED: UNDERSTANDING WAITING PERIODS

    What Does Insurance Excess Mean?

Let’s start with the basics. Insurance excess is the amount you agree to pay upfront when making a claim. Think of it as your share of the cost before your insurer covers the rest. This mechanism helps manage risk and discourages small or unnecessary claims while keeping premiums lower.

    How Does Insurance Excess Work?

Excess is applied per claim, not per policy. Your applicable excess must be paid every time you claim, even for different types of claims.

    Key takeaways:

    • You only pay when you claim.
    • The amount varies by policy and risk profile.
    • There may be multiple excess types depending on the event or insured item.

Excess on Insurance: Why It Exists

So, why do insurers charge excess at all?

    • It prevents excessive small claims.
    • It reduces administrative load.
    • It allows insurers to keep premiums low overall.

From a business point of view, it’s a risk management tool because if people have to contribute something, they’re less likely to claim small or frequent matters.

Basic Excess Meaning and How it Affects You

Basic excess is the standard, flat-rate amount that applies to most claims. It’s set when your policy begins and is listed on your policy schedule. Basically, it is the minimum amount you’ll pay out of pocket.

For example, let’s look at your motor insurance policy. If the basic excess is R5,000 and the claim is R20,000, the policyholder pays the first R5,000, and the insurer covers the remaining R15,000.

RELATED: HOW INSURANCE COMPANIES CALCULATE YOUR PREMIUMS

    What Is Voluntary Excess?

A voluntary excess is when policyholders voluntarily increase their basic excess in exchange for reduced premiums. Opting for a higher excess means paying more out of pocket in the event of a claim but enjoying lower monthly premiums.

    This is ideal if:

    • You rarely claim
    • You’d rather save monthly and cover more.

What Does Excess Mean in Pet Insurance?

In pet insurance, excess works a little differently:

    • Fixed excess:

Pet insurance often comes with a fixed excess per veterinary visit or treatment. This can vary based on the policy and service received.

    • Percentage-based excess:

Pet insurance may sometimes have a percentage-based excess, where the policyholder pays a percentage of the total veterinary expenses.

    What Is an Excess Buster?

At dotsure.co.za, we offer an additional benefit called Excess Buster  that reduces or removes the amount you need to pay in the event of a claim.

If you already have pet insurance with us, log in to your Manage Portal and choose to add excess buster to your policy!

Tips to Manage Your Excess Like a Pro

    Assess Your Risk Tolerance:

Consider how much you’re willing to pay out of pocket in exchange for lower premiums.

    Review Policy Details:

Understand the types of excesses and their implications.

    Consider Mitigating Risks:

Taking steps to mitigate risks (such as parking inside a garage for car insurance) might lower premiums or excess amounts.

Don’t Let Excess Catch You Off Guard

Now that you know what insurance excess is, you’ll know that with dotsure.co.za, you can control your excess, reduce your premiums, and even eliminate excess on Pet Insurance with our Excess Buster benefit.

  • DOES INSURANCE COVER HIJACKING IN SOUTH AFRICA?

DOES INSURANCE COVER HIJACKING IN SOUTH AFRICA?

Hijacking is an unfortunate reality on South African roads. With carjackings on the rise, many vehicle owners are worried about the financial implications. So, does your insurance cover hijackings in South Africa?

How Common Is Hijacking in South Africa?

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), carjacking incidents have shown an upward trend in recent years, with thousands of cases reported annually. Criminals often operate in coordinated groups, targeting both private and business vehicles.

Where Do Most Hijackings Take Place?

While hijackings can happen anywhere, certain areas are considered high-risk. Hotspots often include:

    • Residential driveways during entry/exit
    • Intersections with high traffic volumes
    • Quiet streets near shopping malls
    • Petrol stations
    • Areas near schools and ATMs.

Urban provinces like Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape typically report the highest numbers of hijackings.

    Does Car Insurance Cover Hijacking?

If your vehicle is hijacked, most insurers will typically pay out based on the market, retail, or agreed value of the car (depending on your policy). However, it’s essential to read the fine print, as not all policies include hijacking cover by default.

Check that your car insurance includes:

    • Hijacking and theft cover
    • Towing and recovery costs
    • Temporary transport contribution.

Also, check whether personal items inside the vehicle are covered. dotsure.co.za offers cover for Portable Possessions as an optional cover section.

    RELATED: CAR INSURANCE: WHAT’S COVERED?

How Do Insurance Companies Pay for Recovered Hijacked Vehicles?

If your car is recovered after a hijacking, your insurer will assess the vehicle for damage and decide on the next steps. Depending on the condition:

    • If the vehicle is repairable, the insurer may pay for repairs and return the car to you.
    • If the vehicle is written off, the insurer will pay out according to your policy terms.
    • If major parts are missing, such as the engine or transmission, this may influence the payout value.

In either case, you’ll need a police case number and a detailed report for the claim process to begin.

What Are the Safety Tips for Avoiding a Hijacking?

Prevention is essential when it comes to hijackings. Here are some practical tips:

    • Be aware of your surroundings, especially when entering or leaving your driveway.
    • Avoid distractions such as using mobile phones while driving.
    • Leave enough space between you and the car in front to allow for a quick getaway.
    • Drive with doors locked and windows rolled up.
    • Avoid routine travel patterns. Switch your routes and times.
    • Be extra cautious at intersections and stop streets.
    • Avoid leaving valuable items visible (on cars seats or consoles).

  • INSURANCE EXPLAINED: UNDERSTANDING WAITING PERIODS

    INSURANCE EXPLAINED: UNDERSTANDING WAITING PERIODS

When you take out an insurance policy, one term you’ll often come across is the waiting period. While it might sound like industry jargon, it’s an important part of how insurance works.

    RELATED: COMMON INSURANCE TERMS

What Are Waiting Periods in Insurance?

Also known as a qualifying period, this is the amount of time you need to wait after purchasing an insurance policy before you’re eligible to make certain types of claims. It’s essentially a buffer zone designed to prevent claims for incidents that may have occurred before the cover started.

Waiting periods can vary depending on the type of insurance and the provider. For example, a pet insurance policy might have a waiting period for illness cover but offer immediate cover for accidental injuries.

    RELATED: PET INSURANCE WAITING PERIODS

Why Does Insurance Have Waiting Periods?

Insurance waiting periods exist to protect both the insurer and the wider pool of policyholders. Without them, people could take out a policy only after something has gone wrong, such as getting life cover after having received a serious diagnosis.

These periods ensure fairness and allow insurers to keep premiums reasonable for everyone.

What Is the Waiting Period for Claims?

    The length depends on:

    • The type of insurance you have
    • The type of event or condition covered
    • The specific policy terms.

Here are a few typical examples:

    • Pet Insurance: Often 30 days for illness, sometimes none for accidents (as with dotsure.co.za). Waiting periods for hereditary conditions may be much longer.
    • Health Insurance: Varies for different treatments. Dental or maternity benefits may have longer waiting periods.
    • Life Insurance: Often 12–24 months for claims related to pre-existing conditions or suicide.

Always check the fine print when signing up for cover to understand what’s included and what’s excluded during the waiting period.

    RELATED: HOW INSURANCE CLAIMS WORK

Can You Get Insurance Without a Waiting Period?

If you’re switching providers and have maintained uninterrupted cover, some waiting periods might be waived or reduced, but this isn’t guaranteed. Look for insurers who are transparent about their waiting periods and make it easy to understand what’s covered and when.

At dotsure.co.za, we’re committed to treating customers fairly and keeping things simple. That’s why we offer a fast and easy claim process, backed by clear policy terms and compassionate support when you need it most.

  • HOW INSURANCE COMPANIES CALCULATE YOUR PREMIUMS

HOW INSURANCE COMPANIES CALCULATE YOUR PREMIUMS

Have you ever wondered why your insurance premium is a certain amount? Whether it’s for your car, pet, home, or business, insurance companies use a variety of factors to determine how much you pay.

RELATED: WHY DO INSURANCE PREMIUMS INCREASE?

The Key Factors That Influence Your Insurance Premium

We don’t just pull your insurance premiums out of a hat. It’s far more personal than that. Insurance premiums are carefully calculated based on risk, statistics, and your individual details. Here are some of the main factors at play:

    • Your Risk Profile: Insurers assess how likely you are to claim based on statistics. For example, younger drivers might pay more for car insurance. Pet insurance may be pricier for certain breeds, and business insurance for an online store may be more expensive due to transit or cyber risks.
    • The Value of What You’re Insuring: A brand-new luxury car will cost more to insure than an older hatchback. The same goes for a larger home versus a modest one and selecting higher or lower limits on your pet insurance.
    • The Use of What You’re Insuring: A car or building used for business activities is exposed to more risk and, therefore, higher premiums.
    • Location, Location, Location: Where you live or operate your business affects your premium. High-crime areas or regions prone to extreme weather may result in higher premiums.
    • Claims History: A clean claims history can mean lower premiums, while frequent claims may increase premiums.
    • Excesses: The general insurance principle is that the higher your excess, the lower your premium. So, if you have chosen a lower excess to avoid paying more when you claim, you may pay a higher premium monthly.
    • Cover Level: Comprehensive cover, such as our Ultimate Pet Plan, will cost more than our Accidental Plan. The same applies to dotsure.co.za car insurance, which offers tailored cover with Name Your Price™. This allows you to save by removing cover options you don’t need.

  • WHY DO INSURANCE PREMIUMS INCREASE?

    WHY DO INSURANCE PREMIUMS INCREASE?

Nobody enjoys a price increase. Petrol, medical aid, gym memberships… They always seem to be going up. And insurance premiums are no different. But before your inner Karen comes out and asks to speak to the manager, let’s unpack the reasons behind premium increases and what you can do about them.

RELATED: HOW INSURANCE COMPANIES CALCULATE YOUR PREMIUMS

Common Reasons for Insurance Premium Increases

    Inflation & Rising Costs

Like groceries and petrol, repairs, vet treatments, and labour costs increase over time. If mechanics, vets, or spare parts become more expensive, insurers adjust premiums to keep up.

    Increased Claims in Your Area

If your neighbourhood has more thefts or accidents, insurers may see it as a higher risk, influencing your premiums.

    Changes in Your Circumstances

Moving to a new area, upgrading to a more expensive car, or adding a new pet to your policy can impact on your premium.

    Market Trends & Regulations

Economic shifts, supply chain issues, and new regulations can also affect how premiums are structured.

How to Keep Your Premiums Manageable

    Keep Your Claims History Clean

The fewer claims you make, the less risky you appear to insurers — helping to keep your premiums steady.

    Choose the Right Plan

Pick an insurance plan that matches your needs. Being underinsured can leave you exposed, but overinsuring can mean paying for cover you don’t need.

    Increase Your Excess

A higher excess means lower monthly premiums, but only if you can afford the excess in the event of a claim.

    Save with Insurance

The bottom line? Insurance premiums aren’t random price hikes. They reflect real-world costs and risks. But by making smart choices, such as choosing the right insurance company (it’s us, dotsure.co.za), you can help keep your premiums in check while staying covered when you need it most.

  • WHEN INSURANCE SAYS ‘IT’S NOT YOU, IT’S ME’

WHEN INSURANCE SAYS ‘IT’S NOT YOU, IT’S ME’

Breakups are tough, especially when it’s your insurance company delivering the news. While it might feel personal, there are a few reasons why insurers might part ways with you (and, spoiler alert) it’s usually them.

Why Does an Insurer ‘Break Up’ With You?

    1. High Risk, High Stakes

Insurance is all about risk, and if the insurer decides your risk profile has become too high, they might call it quits. This could happen if you’ve had multiple high-risk claims in a short period of time or if your circumstances change, making you a higher-risk policyholder.

    2. Non-Payment of Premiums

Love is a two-way street. If premiums aren’t paid on time, the insurer might consider it a deal-breaker. Set reminders or choose auto-debit options to keep the relationship healthy.

We make it easy for you to pay your premiums! It’s all online. Just log in to your portal and follow the steps.

    3. Failure to Disclose

You know what they say: Don’t try to be perfect; just be honest! If you forget to mention you were in a previous car accident or that your new dog was already previously diagnosed with an illness, your insurer could feel blindsided and decide to walk away.

    4. Policy Violations

Every relationship has boundaries, and insurance is no different. If you violate the terms of your policy (e.g., driving recklessly or neglecting regular maintenance), your insurer might reconsider the partnership.

    How to Avoid the Breakup

Be Transparent: Always inform your insurer about changes in your life, car, or home.

Stay Responsible: Drive safely, maintain your property and give your pets the care they deserve.

Choose the Right Partner: At dotsure.co.za, we work to make the relationship as smooth and supportive as possible.

Insurance might not seem like something worth crushing over, but it’s easy to fall head over heels when you look a little closer. Okay, maybe that’s going a bit far. • CLAIMS 101: UNDERSTANDING POLICY WORDING

    CLAIMS 101: UNDERSTANDING POLICY WORDING

Insurance can feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to understanding the language used in your policy. Here, we demystify some common insurance terms related to insurance claims.

    Average

The concept of average applies when a claim is made in situations of under-insurance (when your insured sum is less than the actual value of the insured property).

    Example:

    • Sum insured: R200,000
    • Value at risk: R300,000
    • Loss (repairs): R60,000

    The settlement would be:

    (R200,000/R300,000) × R60,000 = R40,000

To avoid under-insurance and reduced payouts, ensure your assets are insured for their full replacement value.

    Agreed Value

For certain high-value items like classic cars or rare artwork, you can opt for agreed value coverage. This means you and your insurer agree on a set value for the item at the policy’s inception. In case of a total loss, the insurer pays this agreed value.

    Excess (First Amount Payable)

The excess is the portion of a claim you pay out of pocket before your insurer steps in. It can be a fixed amount or a percentage of the claim.

    Example:

If your policy states an excess of 10% or a minimum of R1,000.

    • Claim of R100,000: Excess = R10,000
    • Claim of R5,000: Excess = Minimum R1,000

A higher excess often results in lower premiums, but you’ll pay more in the event of a claim.

    Proximate Cause

This term refers to the direct cause of a loss that has not been interrupted by other events. Insurers only cover claims for insured events directly causing the loss.

    Example:

A shop insures its windows against all risks except fire. A fire nearby causes a mob to riot, breaking the windows. The proximate cause is the riot, not the fire, so the insurer will cover the damage.

    Reject vs. Repudiate

    • Reject: The insurer declines to pay a claim, or part of it, based on the terms of the client’s policy.
    • Repudiate: Similar to reject, but involves other reasons like misrepresentation or fraud.

Always review the reasons provided if your claim is rejected or repudiated.

    Cash-Back and No-Claim Bonuses

    • Cash-back bonus: Some insurers reward policyholders with a cash payout for not claiming over a specific period.
    • No-claim bonus: A discount on your premium based on your claim history. Claiming can reduce this discount.

    Write-Offs

A write-off occurs when an item, often a vehicle, is deemed beyond repair or uneconomical to fix. Vehicles are classified into codes depending on their condition:

    • Code 2: Repairable but uneconomical under the policy.
    • Code 4: Permanently demolished.

If your vehicle is written off, the insurer will compensate you based on the insured value.

From road accidents to car troubles, from household disasters to Mother Nature herself, here’s what to look out for to keep the festive spirit merry.

    Top Insurance Claims Over December

    Common Household Insurance Claims:

    • Power Surges: What happens when you pair load shedding and festive décor together? Things get heated, especially when the Christmas tree catches alight.
    • Water Damage: Burst geysers and leaking pipes due to extra water usage and old pipes can really dampen the holiday mood.
    • Theft: Empty homes and distracted neighbours? Sounds like the perfect time for burglars and thieves to take their chances.

    Common Car Insurance Claims

    • Accidents: This time of the year, the roads are packed with last-minute shoppers racing around, tired drivers from out of town, and everyone on holiday or on leave! Road accidents and collisions lurk around every corner.
    • Hijackings: It’s South Africa, Crime is always a concern, but it tends to spike during December because of all the distractions. Vehicle break-ins, theft and hijacking risks increase during this time.

    • Theft: We know a busy store is all you want for Christmas, but they are also prime targets for shoplifters.

Festive season, holiday season, Dezemba, aka: Silly Season! We know that the South African holidays can come with their share of risk and chaos! From unpredictable storms to opportunistic crime, here’s our festive season survival guide to being prepared so you can enjoy those cocktails instead of relying on them. 😉

Here’s how to protect what matters most:

    1. Lock down your home

If you’re travelling, don’t leave your home vulnerable.

    • Test your alarm, lock valuables away and ask a trusted friend or neighbour to check in. Your plants and your pocket will thank you later!
    • Use timer switches on your lights or smart cameras to create the illusion of someone’s home; you’re less likely to be targeted if your house doesn’t look “empty”.
    • Update or review your building and contents insurance; burglary claims often spike at this time of the year.
    • And remember, resist the urge to post your travel plans on social media. Letting the world know you’re not home for a few weeks is like handing over your keys and asking for trouble.

    2. Ready your car for road trips

Wherever you’re headed, if you’re hitting the road, your car needs attention.

    • Schedule a service and check essentials such as tyre pressure, fluids and brakes.
    • Make sure your insurance includes emergency roadside assistance. You’ll thank yourself later.

Our car insurance cover has your back if you’re stranded. Read more about that here: After-hours Emergencies on The Road.

We also have a complete road trip checklist just for you!

    3. Secure your valuables

Portable possessions such as phones, jewellery and holiday purchases are easy targets for thieves.

    • Don’t leave valuables such as handbags or shopping bags in your car, if you do, keep them out of sight!
    • Update your insurance to cover new items and gifts. You can manage your policies with us from the 24/7 Online Manage Portal.

    4. Prepare for storms and power cuts

A South African summer means thunderstorms and power cuts for some parts of the country. For the entire country, load-shedding is always a risk!

    • Clear gutters, trim trees and check your roof for leaks.
    • Protect your electronics with surge protectors and find out if your policy covers things such as spoilage if your freezer fails. RIP to all the lost gammons out there!

    5. Stay safe when staying home

Even if you’re not travelling, always keep safety in mind!

    • Set your alarm, lock gates and park your cars securely.
    • Be cautious with open flames and overloaded plugs. Candles are great for ambience, but not if they are near flammable festive decorations.

    Enjoy worry-free festivities with insurance

The holidays are for celebrating, not stressing. With dotsure.co.za, you’re covered for life’s unexpected twists. Get a quote or review your policy today at dotsure.co.za.

    INSURANCE AND YOUR MENTAL HEALTH

Peace of Mind Starts with Good Insurance

Ever found yourself overwhelmed by a sudden car breakdown or an unexpected overnight vet visit? October is Mental Health Awareness Month, and at dotsure.co.za, we understand that life’s curveballs can impact more than just your wallet—they can affect your mental well-being, too. Having the right insurance for your business, home, cars, or pets can ease some of that mental burden. Here’s how having good insurance can make a difference.

How Insurance Impacts Your Mental Health

    Reduces Financial Anxiety

One of the most significant stressors in life is money—especially when it comes to unexpected costs. If your car breaks down or your pet needs an overnight visit to the vet – without insurance, these expenses can hit hard. But with dotsure.co.za’s flexible and extensive insurance options, you can avoid the anxiety and financial strain, knowing you are covered.

    Your Safety Net

Insurance provides a crucial safety net. Whether you were in a car accident or your home was broken into – you won’t be left scrambling to pick up the pieces. Insurance can be a life-saving safety net that can make all the difference to your mental well-being.

    Peace of Mind

Without insurance, the fear and worry of the unknown can weigh heavily. When you’re insured, you’re assured to rest easy knowing that you’re covered no matter what happens. This peace of mind lets you focus on the things that matter most—your family, work, and well-being.

    Supports Wellness

Being insured doesn’t just help in a crisis—it can also support your overall wellness. Some insurance policies, like our Superior and Ultimate Pet Plans, even cover wellness visits, and our Smart-Driving App offers a discount on your car insurance premium for better driving habits. As SA’s #1 Insurer***, we promote a healthier, more balanced life for you and your loved ones.

  • EXPLAINED: COMMON INSURANCE TERMS

    EXPLAINED: COMMON INSURANCE TERMS

    Simplifying Insurance Language

At dotsure.co.za, we’re dedicated to making insurance simple and straightforward for our clients. Below, we break down some common insurance terms, to help you to understand the essentials of your policy and how to make the best choices for your needs.

    Commercial Use

Commercial use refers to using your property (such as a vehicle or other equipment) for business purposes. Always refer to your policy document to understand what is permitted under your coverage and whether any specific conditions or exclusions apply.

    Credit Shortfall Insurance

When financing a vehicle, the loan’s accrued interest in the first few years can mean the insured value is less than what you owe the bank if the vehicle is written off. Credit shortfall insurance can cover this gap, ensuring that you are not left paying out-of-pocket for the shortfall between the bank loan and your insurance settlement.

    Excess

An excess, or deductible, is the portion of a claim you are responsible for paying. Be cautious of policies with low premiums but high excesses.

    Exclusions

Exclusions are specific items, losses, or events not covered by your policy. These are clearly specified in your policy wording, so it is essential to read your policy carefully to understand what is and isn’t covered.

    Extensions

An extension is additional coverage or benefits that can be added to your policy, sometimes at an extra premium. These add-ons enhance your coverage and provide extra protection tailored to your specific needs.

    “Held Liable”

You are held liable (responsible) if someone proves that you caused injury, loss, or damage unlawfully, whether deliberately or accidentally (negligently). Liability insurance can protect you in such cases, covering the costs associated with these claims.

    Indemnity

Indemnity is the core principle of most insurance policies. It aims to place you, as far as possible, in the same financial position you were in before the loss occurred. Depending on the policy, this could involve repair, replacement, reinstatement, or a cash payout.

    Pro-Rata Premium

A pro-rata premium is a portion of the full premium you pay if you are only covered for a part of the period. For example, if you require cover from April 20, you will be charged a pro-rata premium for the 10 days from April 20 to April 30. After that, you will pay the full monthly premium.

    Replacement Cost

Replacement cost is the amount required to replace or rebuild an item of similar quality using current materials and goods. It’s important to insure your home or valuable items for their replacement cost rather than their original purchase price to avoid financial shortfalls in case of a total loss.

    Safety Measures

Your policy may require specific security measures, such as burglar bars on windows and doors, a vehicle tracking device, or an armed alarm system when you’re not at home. Ensure you meet these requirements to keep your coverage valid.

    Sum Insured

The sum insured is the maximum amount your insurer will pay for insured property in the event of a valid claim. Ensuring this amount is adequate to cover potential losses is crucial to avoid being under-insured.

    Valuation

Valuation involves assessing the financial worth of an item or asset. For appreciating assets, update your valuation certificates annually and insure them for their current replacement value.

    Wear and Tear

Insurance covers sudden, unforeseen circumstances, not damage due to negligence or wear and tear. Examples include rising damp, unattended water leaks, or smooth tyres. Regular maintenance is crucial to avoid claim rejections.

Only Pay for the Cover You need

Managing finances and cutting unnecessary expenditure have never been more crucial. When disposable income decreases, short-term insurance is often axed first, leaving people vulnerable to unfortunate incidents. However, you can streamline your insurance and save money without compromising coverage.

    Optimising Your Insurance

With dotsure.co.za, you can customise your insurance to fit your specific needs.

    • Adjust Your Car Insurance:

By removing certain cover sections on your car insurance, you can save on your premium.

    • Improve Home Security:

Improving your home’s security can lower your insurance premium. Even if you don’t live in a security complex, these measures can still offer significant savings.

    • Consolidate Your Policies:

Combining all your personal insurance needs under one policy with dotsure.co.za, can lead to significant savings on your monthly premium.

    • Increase Your Voluntary Excess:

Raising your voluntary excess can significantly lower your monthly premium. Ensure you can afford the higher excess amount in case of a claim.

    • Correctly Insure Your Car:

Avoid overinsuring older vehicles. Insure your vehicle for its correct value to avoid unnecessary costs.

    • Update Your Home Contents:

Review your household inventory every six months and adjust the insured sum accordingly. Use replacement values, not market values, and remove old or discarded items from your inventory.

    • Avoid Duplicate Coverage:

Ensure you’re not paying twice for the same benefit. If your car or home insurance includes roadside assistance, don’t opt for the same benefit from your medical aid provider.

    • Keep Details Updated:

Inform your insurer of any changes in your lifestyle or needs. These updates can save you money by reflecting your current risk profile.

    • Avoid Unnecessary Claims:

Avoid claiming for small events you can cover out-of-pocket. Reserve your insurance for significant, unexpected losses to keep your premiums lower.

Insurance provides peace of mind and financial protection when things go wrong. Following these practical tips means you can reduce your premium while ensuring adequate coverage.

  • UNDERSTANDING SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERM INSURANCE

    UNDERSTANDING SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERM INSURANCE

Safeguarding All Your Assets with Relevant Cover

In an unpredictable world where accidents, natural disasters and unforeseen circumstances can strike at any moment, insurance coverage becomes a crucial aspect of financial planning.

    Protection for Immediate Needs

Short-term insurance encompasses a variety of policies that offer coverage for a limited duration, excluding life insurance, which is long-term insurance. Short-term insurance is indispensable for anyone who owns assets. Shockingly, statistics reveal that a significant portion of vehicles on South African roads are uninsured, leaving individuals vulnerable to substantial financial losses in the event of accidents or damages.

Imagine driving an uninsured car and being involved in an accident or witnessing your home being destroyed by a devastating fire. Without insurance, you could be left grappling with significant repair or replacement costs, potentially draining your savings or pushing you into debt. Short-term insurance acts as a financial safeguard, covering expenses for repairs, replacements, or providing lump sum payouts in case of claims, depending on the policy’s terms and conditions.

Short-term insurance policies typically cover a range of areas, including car insurance, business insurance, home contents insurance, travel insurance, and pet insurance. These policies offer protection against various risks, which ensure that individuals can mitigate the financial impact of unforeseen events.

Different Types of Short-Term Insurance Policies

    • Vehicle Insurance:

Protects you against damages, theft, or loss of vehicles such as cars, motorbikes, trailers, watercraft, or caravans.

    • Home Contents Insurance:

Safeguards personal belongings within the home, including electronics, furniture and appliances, against loss, theft or damage.

    • Building Insurance:

Covers the structure of the home against perils such as fires or floods.

    • Portable Possessions Insurance:

Offers protection for valuable items such as smartphones, jewellery, or watches against theft, loss, or accidental damage.

    Understanding the Difference

While short-term insurance addresses immediate protection needs for assets and possessions, long-term insurance focuses on providing coverage for extended periods, typically involving life-changing events such as death, disability, or retirement.

Short-term insurance premiums may fluctuate annually or upon changes in circumstances, such as acquiring a new vehicle. In contrast, long-term insurance premiums remain relatively stable over the policy’s lifetime, offering consistent coverage for major events.

    Examples of Long-Term Insurance

    • Life Insurance:

Provides a lump sum payment to beneficiaries in the event of the policyholder’s death, serving as financial protection for loved ones.

    • Provident Fund:

A retirement savings fund where regular contributions accumulate over time, providing income during retirement.

    • Disability Policy:

Offers financial support in the event of temporary or permanent disability, assisting with living expenses or medical care.

    • Health Cover:

Covers medical expenses incurred due to illness or injury, alleviating the financial burden of healthcare costs.

    Making Informed Choices

When selecting insurance coverage, it’s crucial to assess individual needs and risks carefully. Factors such as driving history, property location, and lifestyle influence the determination of insurance premiums.

Investing in both short-term and long-term insurance provides peace of mind and financial security for the future. Whether one is facing a minor mishap or preparing for significant life events, having comprehensive insurance coverage ensures protection against unforeseen circumstances, safeguarding assets and loved ones.

How to Ensure Your Small Business Has the Right Cover

Running a small business involves juggling numerous responsibilities and risks, making it imperative to have a robust plan in place to protect your venture. With a plethora of insurance options available, determining the right coverage for your specific needs can be challenging.

    Analyse Assets

Start by conducting a meticulous evaluation of your business assets. This initial step helps you identify the key areas that require insurance coverage. Understanding your assets sets the foundation for building a comprehensive insurance plan.

    Understand Risks

Every industry faces distinct risks. Whether you’re an accountant concerned about potential lawsuits for tax return errors, or a restaurant owner worried about customer health issues, assessing your industry-specific risks is crucial.

    Legal Responsibilities

Insurance isn’t just a financial decision, it often aligns with legal obligations. Depending on your industry, regulations, and client relationships, specific insurance coverage may be mandatory. For example, liability cover might be required for businesses with employees. Thoroughly research and understand the legal requirements applicable to your business.

    Prioritise Coverage

While cost is a valid concern for small businesses, compromising on the quality of coverage can have severe consequences. Balance the cost of insurance with the potential benefits it provides. Prioritise comprehensive coverage to avoid significant financial setbacks in the event of unforeseen circumstances.

    Consider the Excess

Most insurance policies come with excess – the amount you must pay before the insurance coverage kicks in. While opting for a higher excess may lower premiums, ensure that your small business can afford the amount when filing a claim. Factor in both the premium costs and excess amounts when selecting your coverage plan.

    Seek Personalisation

Opt for insurance plans that offer personalisation, allowing flexibility to adapt to your company’s changing needs. Whether facing a global pandemic, changes in productivity, or fluctuations in team size, personalised insurance plans provide the adaptability necessary for the evolving landscape of small businesses.

With dotsure.co.za’s business insurance, you can tailor your policy according to your specific needs.

  • 3 REASONS YOUR SMALL BUSINESS NEEDS INSURANCE

3 REASONS YOUR SMALL BUSINESS NEEDS INSURANCE

The Biggest Threats to Your Success.

Small businesses in South Africa face a myriad of challenges, and among the top concerns are crime, fire, and floods. As a small business owner, understanding and mitigating these risks is crucial for the longevity and success of your enterprise. One of the most effective ways to protect your business from unforeseen disasters is through comprehensive insurance coverage.

    Persistent Threats

South African businesses are confronted with significant crime risks. Small businesses can expect to lose a substantial portion of their turnover, at least 20%, to crime-related incidents. The average annual cost of crime for these businesses amounts to over R100,000, impacting approximately 5 out of every 10 small businesses over a twelve-month period. This is where insurance proves to be invaluable.

    Potential Catastrophes

While the chances of a fire occurring are lower than crime, the severity of the loss can be devastating. A fire has the potential to result in a total loss of your business assets, with damages running into millions. Many businesses may assume it will never happen to them, underestimating the risk.

Floods are unpredictable and can cause severe damage to businesses. Last year, KZN witnessed floods that impacted 826 businesses, with an estimated cost of damage totalling around R7 billion. Similarly, Cape Town experienced heavy rains, resulting in flood damage estimated to be around R1.4 billion. Flood damage can significantly impact your business, and could result in a total loss.

Rather than hoping your business remains unaffected, it’s wise to cover this risk.

  • CAN YOU DRIVE AROUND WITH A PICTURE OF YOUR LICENCE?

CAN YOU DRIVE AROUND WITH A PICTURE OF YOUR LICENCE?

Picture this: You’re driving down the road, music blasting, and suddenly you see those dreaded blue lights flashing in your rear-view mirror. You pull over, your heart racing, then realise, “Oh no! I forgot my driver’s licence at home!” What now?

Let’s be honest; we’ve all forgotten or misplaced our driver’s licence at home. It’s that one annoying item that always disappears when you need it the most. So, what can you do if you find yourself in a sticky situation without your trusty licence?

The best thing to do is to stay calm and explain the situation honestly. If you have any other form of identification, such as a passport or ID card, show it to the traffic cop. They might let you off with a warning or ask you to produce your license at a later stage.

Can you drive around with a picture of your licence?

The simple answer is NO. You cannot legally drive with a picture of your driver’s license instead of the physical card. In South Africa, the law requires drivers to carry their original driver’s licence with them at all times while driving. A photocopy or a digital image of the licence is not considered a valid substitute.

While having a photo of your driver’s licence on your phone may seem convenient, it is not legally acceptable. Traffic cops are required to ask for your original driver’s licence when you get pulled over and if you cannot produce it, you could face a fine or even have your vehicle impounded.

So, remember, driving around with a picture of your licence is not a legal substitute for the real thing. In fact, if you try to pull that trick with a traffic cop, you might end up with a ticket faster than you can say, “Cheese!”

    DOTSURE.CO.ZA SUPPORTS UNCONDITIONAL LOVE

dotsure.co.za, the country’s biggest online pet insurance provider is bringing the biggest reality-romance TV show, The Bachelor, to South African audiences.

The Bachelor TV series helps a handsome bachelor and one lucky lady out of 25 find love together. It has wowed US audiences for 21 seasons and has spinoffs in Japan, Greece, and Russia. Now, doture.co.za brings you a proudly South African version, launching on DSTV’s M-Net Prime Time on February 14, 2019. The man of the moment is model, entrepreneur, and former Sharks rugby player, Lee Thompson and doture.co.za is the main sponsor.

dotsure.co.za is proud to play matchmaker and put true love in the spotlight, and not only the kind of love that comes with a ring. The lead man adores the animals in his life, and they have an important place in it, onscreen and offscreen. “Lee knows that a home isn’t really a home without a pet,” says doture.co.za’s managing director, David Roache. “Naturally, being a pet insurance provider, we are also huge pet lovers, so it just felt like a natural fit for us.”

dotsure.co.za believes that animals bring love into any situation and will provide a year’s cover to the winning couple’s pets to help with pricey medical and wellness expenses. The online insurance provider also plans to run their unconditional love campaign throughout the duration of the Bachelor SA series, whereby they will be educating and encouraging the public on the importance of adopting shelter animals. It’s part of the premium pet insurance provider’s ongoing way to say ‘thank you’ to all furry friends. What else are they doing to get tongues and tails wagging?

dotsure.co.za is also the sponsor of The Bachelor’s Fantasy League game – which makes online predictions about the show – and brings you Lee’s secret innermost thoughts in The Bachelor Diaries online. Pet-loving viewers can watch out for the episode involving adorable animals with unconditional love to give. Furthermore, fans can expect exclusive dotsure.co.za interviews and appearances from the show’s participants on its own channels including Facebook, Instagram and the blog.

This move builds on dotsure.co.za’s long-term commitment to champion animal wellbeing and wage the war on animal abuse. “We want to support their welfare as much as we can,” David emphasises. In addition to offering the most affordable and adaptable pet insurance in the country that lets you Name Your Price™, dotsure.co.za hosts the annual Polar Bear Plunge which donates blankets to animals in need, and regularly makes significant contributions to animal welfare organisations like the Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL), including a pledge of R50k when they won a Guinness World Record for the most dogs in bandanas in one place. “Every now and then along comes a benefactor who stands out from the norm and in our opinion, dotsure.co.za is one such example,” the AACL team says of the show’s sponsor.

Be sure to catch the fun afoot on February 14th” on all our channels.

  • SAVE MONEY WITH THESE TAX RETURN TIPS!

SAVE MONEY WITH THESE TAX RETURN TIPS!

It’s tax season and if you’re a salted taxpayer, you know that submitting your returns could end you up with a nice cash bonus, but do you see dollar signs when you get your cash back notification? Do you think of the long-awaited holiday you never had money for and the renovations you’ve been meaning to make?

So are we to spend or are we to save? Here are 5 things to do with your return.

    Pay down a credit card

Did you know that according to the National Credit Regulator, over 39% of South African credit consumers have their credit card accounts overdue due to not being able to make their monthly payments? Not only does your credit score take a huge knock, but your blood pressure rises to unhealthy levels.

That’s why this is the perfect opportunity to use your returns as a down payment on your credit card. In the long run this could free up some budget to spend on wise things like long term investments and health care.

For more information on how to reduce your credit card debt, click here!

    Save for a rainy day

You’ve heard this many times, but it’s surprising how few people actually save for emergencies – it’s much easier to swipe the credit card or take out a loan from the bank.

These days there are so many options in terms of saving. Starting with a simple savings account such as a 30 day account to restrict yourself from simply drawing the cash for everyday use can come in handy. Talk to your financial advisor or bank to provide you with the best options for your savings needs.

You will thank yourself when an emergency arises! Here are some of the more popular choices:

    ABSA Save or Invest

    Capitec Global Plan

    Standard Bank Savings and Investments

    Nedbank 32 day account

    Down payment for your wheels

You need a good set of wheels. Sure, it’s a big expense, but the good news is that putting a down payment on your vehicle finance can save you on interest charges for the period taken and could even shorten the payment period.

Speak to your Finance House regarding the options for a down-payment and how it will affect your rates.

Also remember to keep your insurance updated to cover for any shortfall in the event of a loss.

For more info on how to get Credit Shortfall cover – click here.

    Long term investment savings

Technically this counts as a saving as well as a spending, but sometimes you have to spend now to save in the long run! Using your tax returns for long term investments could potentially benefit you by making your money work for you.

Investing in property, bonds, stocks, real-estate or other long-term investment options with your tax returns will not only give you extra income, but could provide you with financial security for your future goals – whether this is an early retirement or a house on shore.

Keep bucks aside for life insurance

This might be one of the most overlooked spending items as many people don’t quite grasp the importance of making provision for an unfortunate end. Although most people are wanting to believe that death only comes with old age, unfortunately the reality is that it can happen at any time, which could leave you unprepared financially to take care of your family’s needs when you are no longer there.

  • WINE AND WORKOUTS: YES/NO?

    WINE AND WORKOUTS: YES/NO?

When your office gang says “it’s wine o’ clock” they usually mean they’re going to indulge in a tall glass of Shiraz to celebrate the end of another working day. A glass of grape nectar after a long day sounds extremely refreshing, but what about the spinning class you’ve booked for tonight? Would it cancel each other out or is a workout after a glass of adult juice bad for your bod?

Let’s do some investigating! We’ll have to see what the experts say, before we order our next pre/after workout.

Here are the health benefits of drinking wine:

    3 Health Benefits of wine

Good for the ticker- People that drink a moderate amount of wine regularly, particularly with food, have a 30% lower risk of heart diseases.

    1. Endorphin boost- Chemically speaking, alcohol stimulates your feel-good hormones. It releases serotonin, dopamine and opioid peptides into your brain, which makes you feel lekker.
    2. Reduces risk of Diabetes – The VU University Medical Centre in Amsterdam did research on 639 862 people over a 12-year period. They found that moderate wine drinkers have a 30% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes than non-drinkers.

Remember all of the above health benefits only apply if you stick to a glass (maybe two) daily. Overindulging can have the opposite effect on your health (and weight). Pouring fermented grape juice down your throat like it’s a jug of fresh aqua might be delicious, but it can be destructive.

Okay, so in general moderate amounts of wine is good for you, but what about a glass before or after you hit the gym?

    Before the gym…

According to Irene Lewis –  McCormack, an exercise physiologist and international fitness educator, booze affects your performance (exercise wise- get your head out of the gutter!) . Your body uses glucose for fuel and that fuel gets stored in your liver. Alcohol, incidentally, also gets metabolized in the liver, which means that alcohol affects your ability to use your glucose. As a result, you’re not going to get the energy you need, and you simply just won’t function on an optimal level.

In addition to the lack of energy, you’ll also dehydrate fast, because alcohol makes you lose water and exercise makes you sweat like a dunk convict stuck in a roadblock… in Kazakhstan.

    After the gym…

“Red red wine, you make me feel so fine”. Researchers have found that wine releases endorphins into our brains that we use to reward motivation for working out. If we consume a glass of wine straight after a sweat session, our body remembers and wants to replicate the action again and again. This means, we, subconsciously encourage ourselves to hit the gym the next day in order to have a bevvy again following the workout.

Please note: Moderation is still key here. A hangover the next morning can keep you away from the weights.

    The verdict

One glass of wine before or after a workout won’t kill you, but it’s better to avoid the combo. Your heart and liver will thank you for it. Make a choice between a glass of ruby delight or a date with the bar (not the alcoholic kind). Choose wisely!

“Everything in moderation, including moderation.” -Oscar Wilde

  • THE PLUNGE MAKES GOOD WAVES ONCE AGAIN!

THE PLUNGE MAKES GOOD WAVES ONCE AGAIN!

28 July 2018, Victoria Bay welcomed an aura of generous Polar Bears clad in their orange swimwear and bearing broad smiles. Last year’s dotsure.co.za Polar Bear Plunge was refreshing, but this year’s swim made waves. Garden Route businesses challenged each other to brave the cold for a chance to win R20 000 for a charity of their choice and locals also offered their support by donating blankets to those in need.

The third annual dotsure.co.za Polar Bear Plunge welcomed over 700 courageous participants into the 14-degree waters of Vic Bay. Crowds cheered as the brave businesses and good people of George plunged into the chilly tides, while former 5 FM DJ Catherine Grenfell played some sizzling tunes. “It was a magical day and it was such an honour to be part of it. Everyone coming together to help those less fortunate and having fun doing it. It really was such a lovely experience”, Says Grenfell.

In between all the excitement participants and supporters were entertained with fun competitions. The pack of bears could also browse through a range of products and delightful edibles from local charity stalls at the event, while the young cubs ventured through the exciting kids’ corner.

The generous hearts of the Garden Route attended the event for fun, thrills and the most important reason of all – for the community! With their help, over 732 blankets were collected and were distributed to 4 major charities that were charged with warming up the less fortunate people and pets in the area. The AACL, SPCA, Rotary George, and Thanda Jesu were the grateful recipients and have already set to work putting the blankets into the hands (and paws) of those that need them most.

Apart from the giant mountain of blankets collected of for the charity, a sum of R20 000 was also donated to the Sports Academy George. This charity was nominated by Stiles George, who were favoured by the crowd for their wonderful team spirit and received 40% of the votes.

Other local businesses and corporate sponsors also deserve to be praised for their contribution towards the success of the plunge. They did not hesitate to offer their support and services for a worthy cause. “On behalf of dotsure.co.za, I would like to thank each and every person that participated and contributed to this very worthy cause. To the businesses, schools, churches and public who braved the cold, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for helping us reach our goal to help the less fortunate “, says David Roache MD of locally based insurance provider, dotsure.co.za.

Once again, the Polar Bear Plunge was an ice cracking event! The water was chilly, but the vibe was blazing. Long live the dotsure.co.za Polar Bear Plunge and thank you to the loving community for faithfully supporting this wonderful event.

  • HOW TO USE YOUR 67 MINUTES THIS MANDELA DAY

HOW TO USE YOUR 67 MINUTES THIS MANDELA DAY

What’s the Mandela Day Buzz about?

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. Politician, philanthropist and President. Has history ever yielded a better beacon of compassion and selflessness? Perhaps not. Mandela Day honours his Batman-like heroism by allowing you to show-off your own hero-like qualities and give 67 minutes of compassion to a cause of your choice.

    Why 67 Minutes?

That’s a great question! It’s because Mr Mandela was in public service for 67 years. Each minute of goodwill represents a year of his public service lifespan. Let that soak in for a minute… 67 years.

So, would you like to be a Hero like Madiba and clear your guilty conscience?

Here are 3 easy ways to be a hero on Mandela Day

You can donate some life-giving blood. It will make you feel a little weak for a few minutes, but it can give others a lifetime of strength.

    How to share your blood

    • Make sure you are between the ages of 16-65, weigh more than 50 kg’s and have your Superman strength.
    • Find a SANBS Blood Donation Centre near you OR motivate your employer to host a blood drive at your offices for the convenience of all your sidekicks.
    • Eat a balanced meal 3-4 hours prior to donation. Remember-Even superheroes need to refuel.

    Did you know?

Every unit of blood can save up to THREE civilians! That means that you turn into a real-life superhero in less than an hour. How cool is that?

    1. Fly to your local SPCA

Use your flying powers and extra strength to play with the furry friends at the SPCA. Who knows, you might have the urge or wrap one in your cape and carry it to the safety of your own hideout.

How to carry your furry friends to safety?

    ADOPT-YOU save a life!

Animals in shelters are abandoned and left destitute by some serious villains. They were left to fight the battle between good and bad alone, wandering around in search of a sidekick and a life companion. You have the power to make their future better than their past. You can provide them with a haven and experience, in the process, benefit from their unconditional love and companionship.

For guidelines on the adoption process click here.

    1. Share your superpowers

You can share your caring superpowers with organisations like the Red Cross. Your selfless 67 minutes could save the next little Superman.

    Red Cross

In less than 67 seconds you can donate R20 or more to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital which will contribute to the wellbeing of little superheroes fighting the battle for survival against the evilest villain of them all… Illness.

    How do donate?

Visit the Children’s Hospital Trust website by clicking here.

If you would like to make a personal contribution to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital, you can also pop in for a surprise visit and entertain the little superheroes with some fun and games. Your 67 minutes could make a major difference.

    YOU could be the difference!

We at dotsure.co.za we also do our part. We celebrate Mandela Day by making it our mission to utilize a valuable feeding scheme to help feed 20 000 vulnerable South Africans every month. The prepared food packs consist of rice, soya mince, vegetables and a mixture of 21 vitamins and minerals which are handed out to charity organisations in Gauteng and the Western Cape.

On Mandela Day our employees honour Madiba by sharing their caring superpowers by helping us pack. Our team has enough power to save thousands of little superheroes.

Do you have the power to save lives?

Of course! Share your 67 minutes and honour the legacy of our country’s most influential leader!

    Viva Madiba!!!

  • BREAKING NEWS: IT’S DOTSURE.CO.ZA POLAR BEAR PLUNGE TIME AGAIN!

BREAKING NEWS: IT’S DOTSURE.CO.ZA POLAR BEAR PLUNGE TIME AGAIN!

On Saturday, 28 July 2018 the brave and caring Garden Route community will again flock to the icy shores of Victoria Bay, where they will plunge into the icy depths of the winter-chilled Indian ocean to take part in the annual dotsure.co.za Polar Bear Plunge, all in aid of a host of local and national charities.

This year, local businesses and teams will be competing to bring the biggest and most exuberant following to the shore in order to make sure that charities close to their hearts are the beneficiaries of the sponsored R20 000 purse. Each team that enters will consist of 10 members and bring with them, warm hearts, warmer blankets and the warmest smiles available anywhere.

In 2017, with the help of the local community, the event (which is essentially a blanket drive), managed to raise more than 700 blankets for those in need. This year, the target is set at a cool 1000! “Winter is a hard time of year and it’s easy to forget others struggling in the cold temperatures while we live in our cosy comforts. This is why we do this! We do it because we care, we do it to try and make South Africa a little better, by trying to help those less fortunate than ourselves.”, says David Roache, MD of dotsure.co.za.

For those who would prefer to keep their toes dry, the 2018 edition of the Plunge will also boast a sizzling line up of entertainment including some hot tracks laid down by former 5FM DJ, Catherine Grenfell. Participants and supporters can partake in activities like a brain freeze eating contest, water sports, a crazy fun kids’ corner and more. The nominated charities will also be present on the day and have stalls where they will educate the public on what they do and where they will also be selling goodies, in aid of charity.

dotsure.co.za challenges you to dress in your most exciting swimwear and brave the freezing winter waves to show your support for this very deserving cause. Invite all your friends and family members to take the plunge and to bring a blanket as your entry fee.

Businesses can contact dotsure.co.za at [email protected] for an entry form and other participants can register on the dotsure.co.za Facebook page.

Don’t be Chicken, be Polar Bear! It’s time to get freezin’ for a reason!

  • Our Top 10 binge-worthy Netflix shows

Our Top 10 binge-worthy Netflix shows

After a long day of being insurance Vikings and delivering you excellent service we all shamelessly admit to binge-watching the hottest shows on Netflix. Without asking Mr Google for the top home-screen shows, you’ll soon know what to watch. We rounded up our favourites because we’re fans, too. And because we’re always professional, we also threw in the Rotten Tomatoes rating for each one. Bet these will keep you up all night and leave you with baggy eyes. Not a bad trade-off for days of entertainment, eh?

    Our Top 10 Series

    1. The End of the F***ing World

    Rotten Tomatoes rating: 97%

We know some might frown at the show’s title, but if you watch the show you’ll see that it’s a fffitting one. The thriller series is about a 17-year-old teenager who believes he’s a psychopath. It’s probably not that far-fetched when you consider that he put his hand in a deep-fat fryer at 9 years old just to feel something. What a freak! Anyways, he meets a girl, the two weirdos connect and they go on a journey to find her missing father. Along the way, homicide disrupts the joyride and a stomach-turning twist leads to a surprise. BTW: It’s confirmed by our top dealer sales consultant that this one is a MUST-watch!

    1. Black Mirror

    Rotten Tomatoes rating: 96%

Even if you’ve not watched a single episode of Black Mirror, you’ll be aware of the popular action thriller’s existence. There’s a Black Mirror buzz going around as the show blows more and more viewers’ minds. Imagine being stuck in a small room your entire life. Would you survive, or worse? Black Mirror is twisted, high-tech and will keep you on the edge of the couch.

    1. Stranger Things

    Rotten Tomatoes rating: 94%

Looking for something different? At first glance, Stranger Things looks like a typical American series. It’s anything but the American dream, however. A young boy mysteriously goes missing in a small town, followed by terrifying findings, supernatural forces, and a strange little girl.  It’s a total escape to a world of fantasy and drama.

    1. Shameless

    Rotten Tomatoes rating: 93%

“People around here get their butts beat for missing Shameless, so sit down, shut up, and catch up.” That’s character Mickey Maguire, and statements like these are how a Shameless episode usually lures you to watch an episode of the jaw-dropping comedy-drama. WARNING: Once you’ve seen what can’t be unseen, you won’t be able to stop watching. It’s a shock to the system, at first, but you’ll learn to love Frank, his six kids, and his mixed bag of neighbours. Follow the lives of crazy characters and hide the swear jar far away.

    1. Vikings

    Rotten Tomatoes rating: 93%

Escape to a world of warriors invading England. Embark on an adventure with Ragnar Lothbrok, the first Viking to emerge from Norse legend and onto the pages of history. Ragnar, a man on the edge of a myth, transforms from a farmer to a Scandinavian king. But how? You’ll have to find out for yourself.

    1. Banshee

    Rotten Tomatoes rating: 88%

Banshee will shake the popcorn out of its buckets and onto the floor. The action show is super-exciting. You’ll find yourself stuck in a small town called Banshee in Pennsylvania, USA, where an ex-con takes over the identity of a murdered sheriff. It’s well-worth streaming but we don’t want to give away too much of the good stuff. A world of adventure awaits!

    1. Modern Family

    Rotten Tomatoes rating: 85%

Funny and fabulous are two of the best words to describe this contemporary sitcom. Join the journey of a family full of fun and other binge-worthy drama. If you don’t fall in love with Phil and Gloria you’re probably already infatuated with Claire or Cameron.

    1. House of Cards

    Rotten Tomatoes rating: 81%

If our Digital Content Manager loves it, it must be HOT! House of Cards is tense and intelligent. Be a fly on the wall of the White House and experience political scenes that will leave you speechless. Follow a congressman-and-wife power couple on their quest for revenge, and maybe the presidency.  Sometimes it’s so convincing, it’s hard to believe they’re acting…

    1. Grace and Frankie

    Rotten Tomatoes rating: 81%

Here’s one for the silver foxes. Hopefully you won’t relate to this odd storyline. Grace and Frankie are two senior women who find out that their husbands are romantically involved and on their way to becoming groom and groom. The two ladies try to deal with the situation and struggle to accept the betrayal that’s been blooming behind their backs for the previous 20 years.

    1. Altered Carbon

    Rotten Tomatoes rating: 65%

Pet Sales Consultant, Taylor Morton, says “Altered Carbon is amazing!” It’s twisted and futuristic. Imagine that you could get the perfect body but keep your beautiful mind. With Altered Carbon it’s possible. Consciousness is stored and corpses rise from the dead. One of the revived bodies needs to solve a mind-bending murder before being released from imprisonment.

Please Note: The above shows are not suitable for the youngsters. Peppa Pig and Daniel Tiger are awesome animation alternatives for kiddies.

    Happy Binging!

  • #TECHTALK: SHOULD I SWAP GYM FOR VR?

#TECHTALK: SHOULD I SWAP GYM FOR VR?

It’s just after 5pm and your workday is finally over. Your mind is clogged as you drag tired feet to the car. You turn the key and think about the night’s plans, and realise you need to make a pitstop. The traffic is bad and, finally, after almost an hour, you arrive at your destination. You enter the gym and – BAM – the scent of sweat fills your nostrils. Ugh.  What’s even worse, the crowd of moist, pumped-up bods is flexing, floor-bending and spreading germs all over the fitness centre.

Okay, so maybe it’s not always that bad. You’ve probably made a few pals and the equipment raises the bar, but surely there must be a better way to get those gains in a less boring and conventional manner?

Wake-up and swap your glasses for goggles. You don’t have to stare at dumbbells any more. It’s 2018 and Virtual Reality (VR) is your jog out of the gym and into a world of futuristic cities, robots and other revolutionary figures.

    What’s Virtual Reality?

Virtual reality is a three-dimensional, fictional world that can be accessed using a digital device and a VR headset. The VR headset has screens inside the visor and earphones at the side. The user enters a digital environment that they see through the headset. They can interact with it using hand controllers or sensor-fitted gloves. The sensors pick up any movements you make and the visuals respond accordingly. It’s clever like that!

    What’s revolutionary about VR?

Fitness and gaming joined forces when Nintendo’s Wii Fit was launched in 2007. Wii users quickly worked out that they could play tennis while lounging on their comfy couches, controller in one hand, snacks in the other. Today, we’re reaching a new level of gaming with VR innovation.

One of the most advanced tech systems is the Oculus Rift which provides a sensory experience and a fitness element. Users can explore beautiful landscapes, climb virtual mountains, zoom in to anywhere on the planet or find themselves floating around in space. Bet you’re speechless right now.

Are you wondering how fitness and VR combine to create the body you’re working towards? You can buy a kit which consists of a headset and a single, motion-sensing hand controller which operates the virtual hands that appear on the screen when you put on the VR goggles. When you use the hand controller, you see your “hand” move on the VR screen. Movements include punching, shooting, and swiping. Gamers gonna love this…

The visual “experience” plays on a mobile phone which links with the headset and connects to the phone’s camera lenses, which are positioned to create a 360°, 3D field of vision. As you move your head, the screen tracks your movement so you can “look around” the projected environment. In seconds, you can be in a different dimension and explore the things most only see in movies and dreams. Today you visit the moon, tomorrow you take a trip to the Grand Canyon. The planet, no, the galaxy, is your playground, thanks to virtual reality.

VR and the future of fitness

Working out has reached the next level thanks to virtual reality. It smashes routine into millions of tiny pixels. Watch this video to see how VR deletes calories while you score the perfect booty. Gym bunnies and gamers unite (and fly)!

Still not convinced that working out with VR is awesome for your bod? Well, California-based gamer and writer, Job Stauffer, claims to have lost over 20kg in only 5 months playing a VR game called Soundboxing. In the game, competing players punch a suspended object to the rhythm of songs. They earn points and try to win each session.

According to Nick Harding, a GP from Birmingham, playing VR sports like ones where you catch American football involve a range of body movement that raise the resting heart rate from 56 BPM to 72 BPM. This means that VR contributes towards a healthier lifestyle.

Do you think future fitness centres will be filled with machines that work together with VR?

VR fitness at home versus a power workout at the gym – what’s better?

    Workout @ GYM Benefits:

    Monthly payment option

    Immediate help available

    Build relationships/socialize

    Wide range of equipment

    Group classes

    Personal contact

    Entertaining and challenging

Cost: Average R350-700 pm for gym membership

    Total: R4200 – R8400 per year

    VR @ home Benefits:

    Privacy

    Full tracking

    No distractions

    Avoid sweaty bodies

    Bring your personal trainer home

    Available 24/7

    Entertaining and challenging

Cost: R5000 for Oculus headset, Oculus touch and two sensors. Games average R250 each

    Total: R5000 – R7000

VR workouts and gym exercise both promote better health. If you are easily bored and you’re not a fan of working out with crowds of strangers, VR is the way to go. If you enjoy socializing with gym buddies, and if pumping iron is your forte, the gym’s your best partner.

For now, the gym will probably remain the most popular choice because it is affordable and allows weight-bearing workouts. VR is pricey at present and still has a long way to go. What’s more, its exercise offerings are limited to aerobic action for now. If you start moving around in virtual space, it’s easy to bump into real-world objects that aren’t mapped and to injure yourself like this guy:

Though there will be a solution to this in time. Most likely, VR will become a popular gateway to improved fitness. People who enjoy gyms and physical pursuits will still exercise in the real world, but the visuals on a treadmill are repetitive, and there are no cool, animated figures around to join the journey you’re on.

    GAME OVER

  • OMG, WHAT’S AN ENDORSEMENT?

    OMG, WHAT’S AN ENDORSEMENT?

We know ‘endorsement’ is a big word. If you’ve got insurance, the term might not be foreign to you. You could have heard it or read something about it, but do you know what it means?

Sit back, relax and press play! Here is a video with Palesa Magxidolo, a friendly dotsure.co.za consultant, explaining endorsements in plain English.

Oops. #Dataprobs?  If you’ve run out of data or you’ve got a bad connection and you can’t watch the video, don’t worry, we’ve got your back.

    Here’s that video in words:

    An endorsement is:

    1. a document
    2. that is attached to your policy and
    3. that changes your policy in some way.

Most of the time, it’s a change that you’ve asked for. e.g. you buy a brand-new car and add a driver OR buy a car accessory that needs special cover. These could affect your premiums, Ts and Cs, etc. which is why it’s essential for you to keep your details up to date.

However, not all endorsements are ones that you requested. There are some that your insurer may request. For example, drivers with poor driving records who do not meet the conditions on the policy may receive an endorsement. Eek!

Any changes that you request can happen right away!

At dotsure.co.za, updating your policy is so convenient, you can even do it in your pyjamas at home.

    • Give us a ring on 0861 dotsure (368 7873) and ask your Personal Portfolio Consultant (PPC) to make the changes,
    • or pop us a mail at [email protected] with your change request.

  • POW! THE ABC OF CRYPTOCURRENCY

    POW! THE ABC OF CRYPTOCURRENCY

“I bought R200 worth of Bitcoin in December, it is now worth R55.
I bought R300 worth of Ethereum like 2 weeks ago, it is now worth R131.
This is why it is best that I avoid gambling.”
    – Facebook Friend

Funny, huh? But if cryptocurrency is the future of finance, as one popular blog suggests, you’d better get to know it. Here’s the next of our Finance 101 series. These are the top ten words for talking Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple and other currencies you can’t see…

    Wait, what is cryptocurrency?

It’s digital money. Its ‘coins’ are secured by cryptography (code). You access it online but, because it’s virtual, it is not located in any one place.  Nobody controls it, and nobody can hack it, so there’s no fraud and no inflation. You can easily and securely buy and sell cryptocurrency on mobile apps like Luno. The transaction charges are cheap, even if the currency itself is not. Cryptocurrency value rises and falls a lot which makes it quite controversial. Those who like a little danger, love its unstable ways.

    A bit of (recent) history

You’ve probably heard of Bitcoin. Bitcoin is the poster child for cryptocurrency. It’s worth much, MUCH more than it was when it was launched in 2010. About twenty thousand times more (at the time of writing). It hit its highest-ever value in December 2017, rose and fell in a steady decline in January 2018 and then slumped beginning of February. Since then, the internet has been kinda quiet about it. Get Ethereum instead, ripple the hushed voices of the crypto choir. But there’s a host of others to choose from, too. What to do?

Know the nature of the beast

Being a high-risk investment, cryptocurrency also promises potentially high returns.  The commodity itself is 100% verified and so has an integrity that “real” money lacks. Real money is – ironically – often based on gold reserves that don’t exist.

    Virtual, with real proof

As there are no bars of gold in a vault to guarantee it, cryptocurrency operates on Proof of Work(PoW). When computers ‘mine’, they process transactions (blocks) using complicated algorithms. Validated blocks are ‘coins’, the units of the currency. Proof of Work is when a computer’s capacity is verified against its finds to ensure it is correct and unique, in other words, that the find is real. This means that when a computer finds a coin and you buy it (or part of it) you are guaranteed to get what you pay for. No double-spend. No false finds. No faulty mines.

    Pain in the eco blockchain

It’s also deeply unsexy. Why? Have a look at the mining rig in the picture above. Mining rigs need to have major capacity and you need LOTS of energy to run such strong computers.  Humanity’s electricity is still largely provided by fossil fuels and rich fools. Iceland is threatening its own version of day zero because Bitcoin mining uses more energy than all the country’s households do. The worst part of this is that the power they’d be turning off is renewable energy (the kind we want and that we don’t have enough of). Burstcoin is a brilliant, eco-friendly alternative cryptocurrency with much less carbon karma than other cryptocurrencies. It works through a calculation once –  not multiple times –  meaning it takes much, MUCH less energy to mine (see “blockchain” below).

    A new beginning

So now you know a little more, but before you go back to basics and start trading like your life (or at least, your savings) depend on it, remember that even virtual economies must evolve. Crypto is to traditional currency what Facebook was to snail mail – it is the disruptor, but not (necessarily) the enemy or the answer. The saying still stands in this new economic era: invest your excess and protect your profits.

Here are the top ten words you need to know before you join the new kids on the blockch-… yeah, okay. Enough of the puns for today.

ABC of Bitcoin in ten terms

    A glossary for non-geeks

    1. Altcoin – basically any virtual currency that isn’t the big boy Bitcoin (or, possibly, Ethereum. Loyalty is split). It might be used to say, “my altcoin is altogether more stable than your Bitcoin and Ethereum put together, babe.”
    2. Blockchain – the live, digital ledger holding every single block that has been mined since a cryptocurrency began. It records and validates all transactions and is visible to everyone who purchases. Democracy, anyone? If you can afford it, that is.
    3. Bollinger Band – the range that a crypto price moves around in. This is known as its standard deviation. When the price goes higher or lower than this range, it’s considered ‘volatile’(unstable) and risky (and potentially very profitable) to trade with.
    4. Exchange – a website you can buy crypto coins on. Links below.
    5. FUD – Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt. This is a universal tactic used to create disinformation and affect market behaviour and the crypto market is not immune to human emotion! If anything, it’s more prone to it, as this market isn’t backed by the known patterns of more traditional markets like stocks and bonds are.
    6. Mining – Computers searching for cryptocurrency using complex equations. Each transaction is validated by thousands of machines.
    7. Mooning – not to be confused with naked bottom-waggers, the in-crowd uses this term to refer to a currency whose price is rocketing sky-high. Can you predict its eclipse? That’s when you want to sell, IF you sell.
    8. Proof of Work – an algorithm used to verify and validate transactions (blocks).
    9. Volatility – how much the price of a currency changes over time. Some cryptocurrencies are extremely volatile.
“What?” a mother asks her daughter, “a Bitcoin for your birthday? That’s R 224 042.23, my girl. R 80 186.06 is a lot of money. What do you even need R 114 855.84 for, anyway?”
      That’s volatility for ya.
    10. Wallet – where you “keep” your “coins”. It’s a digital or physical address and it’s usually accessed with a mobile app. Links below.

Got it? Good. Now go impress everyone at the next dinner party. And remember the advice of an ordinary guy whose tipsy typo made him famous,

“traders can only take your money if you sell.”

    Afrikaburn

Based on Burning Man but with a distinctly South African flair, this colourful art festival will blow your mind. From four-story jungle gyms to forty different parties in one night, it’s a grown-up paradise that’s also family friendly. You must take EVERY-thing you need and that includes washing and drinking water and all your food. The event operates on a gifting economy – no cash at all and there’s nothing to buy (apart from ice, because desert camping). Amazingly, the ginormous art exhibition is volunteer-run and you’re encouraged to play your part. That could mean offering a complimentary massage to whoever asks or sponsoring a ticket for someone less privileged than you. Got a wild idea? It belongs here.

    When: 23 April – 29 April 2018

    Where: Tankwa Town, Northern Cape

Why? It’s the largest outdoor art gathering in Africa and the biggest dress-up (or down) in the Southern Hemisphere.

    Entry fee:  R180 – R2 300 (Community Tickets – MayDay Tickets)

If you do one thing: be at the main burn (usually the Saturday night) – it’s when the clan sculpture goes up in flames.

  • WOULD YOU MARRY A ROBOT?

    WOULD YOU MARRY A ROBOT?

Soon humans and bots will unite. “The first marriage will be before – not after –  2050,” says best-selling author and robot expert, Dr David Levy. Hmm… ladies, looks like your knight in shining armor might be heartless but handy. Gents, would you fancy a metal-and-microchip lover?

According to a large group of Artificial Intelligence (AI) experts, robots will become an increasingly popular companion in the bedroom, warranting a system of ethics for their development and use.

In a study at the conference at Goldsmiths, University of London, researchers surveyed 263 testosterone-bursting humans between the ages of 18 and 67. Participants were shown a 2-minute video of robots that looked like replicas of the opposite sex complete with make-up, long lashes and gorgeous bods.

The male species observed and…well, drooled. Turns out that 40,3% of the lusty lovers admitted that they would buy a female robot for companionship and intimacy. According to Dr Levy, interested buyers will be able to purchase celebrity look-alike bots in the future. Buyers will be able to say, “I’ve got a sex robot that looks like Angelina Jolie and she’s fabulous in bed!” and celebs will make even more money out of the sensual robotic sensation as they receive a cut of the purchase price.

    What’s the price tag?

The price of the humanoids has not been confirmed yet. They usually go for around R16k to a million depending on the advanced features. It’s pricey, but, hey, like Jessie J says, “Forget about the price tag, ain’t about (uh) ch-ch-ching ch-ching,” you’ll have Angelina (or Brad or both) between your silky sheets.

What can the droid BAE do?

In 2016 a graphic designer called Ricky Ma created a life-like replica of actress Scarlett Johansson who gives flirty winks and giggles when people tell her she’s cute. She also answers questions and moves her arms and hands around. She’s not a sex robot, she is a work of art. The mechanic beauty is worth more than R 500 000. Unfortunately, she’s not for sale, but feel free to admire her online anytime.

Watch this video and be blown away by human and artificial intelligence.

‘Kay, so humanoids are attractive and – ahem – functional. But can they really do what lovers do? Sure, they just can’t reproduce or foster true emotional bonds with people. They are, however, reliable and always on call. If you don’t feel like conversation, wooing a lover, or if you have a fear of commitment, a robot could be your soulbot. Just keep in mind, when you do need true compassion and more intimate connections, warm humans are still more widely available.

Human flesh or Droid metal? It’s up to you. Just remember robots might have cold feet, but they won’t leave you at the altar or run away with another bot AND they will definitely say, “beep, beep, I do,” on your special day.

  • WORK WITH US

    WORK WITH US

We love it. Most people think of the Garden Route as a place they go on holiday; for us, it’s a truth, every day. It’s a small town for all seasons with some of the country’s best beaches, rivers, wetlands and forests right on its doorstep. We surf, ski, paraglide, hike, cycle and work with smiles on our faces.

dotsure.co.za forms part of one of the town’s largest employers, Badger Holdings, which consistently and effectively promotes wholesome values, hard work and high standards. dotsure.co.za is dedicated to reinventing processes in an established industry that is yet to fully embrace the digital age. Our modus operandi is to disrupt, and our tailored, intelligent and customer-centric approach is changing the game by putting consumers first:

    • We were one of the first South African companies to offer insurance purchase and policy management entirely online.
    • We were the first to let you Name Your Price, South Africa, and it’s now our trademarkWoohoo!.
    • We offer the most competitive and comprehensive pet insurance packages in the country.
    • We hold a world record in fun stuff you can do with furry friends.
    • We are constantly making online insurance easier and simpler. And better.
    • We make a point of earning our fans.

As a result, we’re growing fast and looking for new talent to join the dream team. We aspire to be a tech giant, to go global and help humans (and their dependents) all over the world with efficient and effortless financial solutions. We also believe that giving back is part of going forward, and incorporate community support into our business structure.

What does family feel like? We asked the brothers and sisters of dotsure.co.za.

The best thing for Ray Ray is that “you can express your individuality.”

“Here, being ‘different’ is encouraged and not frowned upon,” Nikiwe agrees. She also admires her colleagues’ “constant support in reaching our individual targets and therefore our team target.”

“Everyone is so talented in their own way,” Amore continues, “and brings their own spice and flavour to the office. Everyone likes working hard – no flakes. Everyone has a ‘personality’ – never a dull moment.”
“Everyone here is themselves,” Anastachia affirms.
Nikki noodles in again. “Best part for me being part of the dotsure.co.za family is the constant motivation and help I get from my teammates.”
“We truly believe in ‘work hard, play hard’,” Robyn reveals. “We are always very honest with each other. We always have each other’s’ backs, no matter what.”
We are “passionate, genuine, lively,” adds Ru, pithily.
Heather sums it up. Life at dotsure.co.za is a celebration of “characters, banter and passion for the brand.” Also, #welikebraai

Amazing service by Dotsure consultant Kimley  by Bebe001

This review serves to credit the amazing customer service by Dotsure consultant Kimley. She was professional, polite and incredibly helpful. On top of that, she even managed to arrange a discount on my policy fee.  I have been with Dotsure just over a year now, and I have no complaints. All consultants are attentive and quick with feedback. Kimley made sure to put me at ease and sorted out all queries wonderfully. I am so impressed with her service. Well done – I am a very happy client.
