THE ULTIMATE ROAD SAFETY CHECKLIST FOR HOLIDAY TRAVELS

Road Safety Guide for the Great SA Festive Season Migration

The species? Homo Mzansis, roadtrippicus holidayus. The destination? Anywhere with sun, sea, family, or a braai waiting.

Every December, a spectacular event unfolds across Mzansi. One so massive, so predictable, and so beautifully chaotic that it rivals the great wildebeest migration of the Serengeti. Millions of South Africans embark on their annual pilgrimage: The Great Festive Migration.

As you join the migration this festive season, use this road safety checklist guide to ensure that your trusty steed is fit, fed, and roadworthy for the long road ahead. You should also manage your Name Your PriceTM car insurance and switch cover on or off this festive season via the 24/7 online Manage Portal.

    Pre-Trip Road Safety Checklist

The Homo Mzansis, roadtrippicus holidayus begins weeks in advance. Forming queues at tyre shops and service centres, often debating oil grades with the confidence of seasoned mechanics. Because if you’re a roadtrippicus holidayus, you know that long drives require more than just directions and good music.

    You should:

    • Plan your route. Use reliable GPS apps and check for construction zones or detours. Print a backup map if you’re travelling through low-signal areas and always take the scenic route.
    • Rest before you drive. Fatigue is one of the biggest risks during holiday season travel. A well-rested driver reacts faster and stays calmer.
    • Avoid night-time trips. Visibility drops, reaction times slow, and roadside help can take longer to reach you.
    • Share your route. Let friends or family know where you’re headed and when you expect to arrive. And then get ready to hit the road.

But First, the Harsh Reality of the Great Migration: Car Accident Stats

The car accident stats in South Africa are scary. Beneath the joy and adventure, our holiday migration also brings heartbreak. Each year, around 14 000 lives are lost on South African roads. That’s not just a number – it’s mothers, fathers, friends, and neighbours who never make it back home.

And here’s the kicker, it’s rarely the roads or the cars that are to blame. It’s how we drive. According to Arrive Alive, South Africa ranks amongst the worst globally for road traffic injuries. Every year, millions are injured on our roads. So, while the holiday season is about celebration and connection, it’s also a time to slow down, buckle up, and keep your herd safe on the journey. This all begins with ensuring that your car is roadworthy and ready for the holidays.

Check Before You Trek: The Ultimate Road Safety Checklist

A roadworthy car is your first line of defence. A scheduled service is the mark of a truly road-ready vehicle, the equivalent of getting your passport stamped. But how do you check your car’s readiness? Here’s a quick guide:

    • Tyres: Check tread, pressure, and the spare.
    • Brakes: A spongy pedal or squeaking sound is your cue to get them checked.
    • Fluids: Check oil, coolant, and brake fluid. Then top up where needed.
    • Battery: Ensure the terminals are clean and the battery isn’t past its lifespan.
    • Lights & Indicators: Essential for visibility and communication on busy roads.
    • Wipers: Replace worn blades.

Pro tip: Before you hit the road, check your licence status or renewal date online because fines are not the souvenirs you want this December.

The Departure After the Road Safety Checks

Dawn breaks. Coolers are packed, and one last check to see if you turned off the geyser. Our migraters, fueled by caffeine, merge onto the freeway to join a very diverse convoy:

    • The bakkie species, towing boats and braais equipment with pride.
    • The SUV clans, identifiable by roof racks and cooler boxes in the boot.
    • The sedan nomads, darting between lanes, playlists set to “old school” hits.
    • The hatchback herd, masters of the “just make it fit” migration technique, proving that even the tiniest species can carry half the house when the festive trek begins.

From above, it’s a sight to behold. Shimmering lines of metal inching toward the coast. And here’s the best part – the really smart drivers won’t only be insured by dotsure.co.za, they’ll also be earning cashback rewards of up to 25% of their monthly premium thanks to our Smart Driver Programme.

Pet Travel Safety: Observe the Sub-Species Known as Pet Parents

Their migration is more complex, requiring hydration bowls, harnesses, and carefully managed aircon levels.

    Key behaviours include:

    • Frequent rest stops for “walkies.”
    • Sharing of padkos between species.
    • Regular affirmations (“Good boy, almost there!”).

If your furry family members are tagging along; use a harness or carrier, keep water available at all times, never leave pets unattended in a car, and ensure your pet insurance is up to date.

Migration-Ready: What Should Be on Your Car Safety Checklist

Accidents and breakdowns can happen, even to the best-prepared drivers. Keep a roadside emergency kit in your boot with:

    • Jumper cables
    • Reflective triangles
    • First-aid kit
    • Flashlight
    • Basic tools
    • Water and snacks

If the unexpected happens, dotsure.co.za’s after-hours roadside assistance (call 0861 368 7873) is available 24/7, including public holidays. Whether it’s a tow, flat tyre, or medical emergency, we’ll get help to you fast.

But Wait, How Do I Use a Traffic Circle the Right Way

Ah, the traffic circle. Whereas most of Mzansi’s great migrators are used to the rhythm of the concrete jungle (guided by the glow of traffic lights and the beat of rush-hour chaos), every driver will encounter the great watering hole of the road (the traffic circle), unsure whether to charge in or wait it out. Here’s how to use a traffic circle the right way:

    • Yield to the right. The cars already in the circle have the right of way.
    • Ease in slowly, choose your lane wisely, and know your exit before you enter.
    • The left lane is your friend for left turns or going straight.
    • The right lane is for those making a right or full U-turn.

And when it’s time to leave, signal your intentions clearly. Give a little blink to let the rest of the flock know where you’re headed.

One More Thing: What are My Rights When Pulled Over

Even the most graceful migrators of the open road eventually attract the attention of the rangers. When the blue lights flash behind or Infront of you, it’s not the time to panic or bolt. It’s simply part of the ecosystem.

In South Africa, when a uniformed traffic officer or police official signals you to stop, you must comply; that’s the law of the land. But while you’re expected to cooperate, you’re also protected by a few important rights that help keep things fair and transparent.

    • Ask for identification. Every officer must carry an official appointment certificate.
    • Know why you’ve been stopped. You have the right to ask for the reason.
    • No cash, no problem. You cannot be forced to pay a fine on the spot.

So, next time the rangers of the road wave you down, remember to respect the process, stay calm, and know your rights. Because even in the wilds of the festive migration, order keeps the herd moving safely.

How Sleep Affects Your Driving: The Fatigue Factor

As night falls, we see the toll of travel. Eyes grow heavy. Playlists loop. The driver hums tunelessly to stay awake.

But driving tired slows your reaction time as much as alcohol does.

    • Take breaks every two hours.
    • Swap drivers if possible.
    • If you feel drowsy, pull over safely and rest.

Having Car Insurance Is the Best Safety Net You Can Give Yourself

After hundreds of kilometres, countless tolls, and at least one argument about directions, the migration is complete! But here’s the best part. Whether you’re driving solo or travelling in a full pack, you can Name Your Price™ this festive season and choose the cover that fits your journey best. And if life throws you a detour, our speedy claims payouts get you back on the road faster than you can say “Are we there yet?” So contact us today to get covered.

  • WORLD’S SMALLEST CAT BREED: THE SINGAPURA

WORLD’S SMALLEST CAT BREED: THE SINGAPURA

If you’ve ever wanted a cat that’s basically a pocket-sized supermodel with the confidence of Bonang on a good hair day, the Singapura is your girl.

The Singapura isn’t just the world’s smallest cat breed, it’s a pint-sized supermodel with the swagger of a couture headliner. Tiny, dazzling, and absolutely convinced that every room is a runway set just for her. And with that iconic sepia coat that glimmers like champagne under fairy lights, who could argue?

But don’t let that fool you.  Singapuras are warm, curious, and endlessly affectionate little souls who move through your home like a spark of holiday magic. This blog is designed to help you understand her personality, how to care for her in a way that supports her delicate build and joyful spirit, as well as her pet insurance needs.

    Let’s begin the show.

What Makes the Singapura Cat So Unique?

Imagine discovering something so cute you immediately start speaking fluent cat-talk. That’s the Singapura story in a nutshell.

It was somewhere in the 1970s. Hal and Tommy Meadow (globe-trotting, Singapore-hopping, and entirely enamoured with the local “drain cats” sporting that signature sepia ticked coat), whisked a few back to the USA and unknowingly launched a feline fashion empire. But then came the late 1980s, when breeder Jerry Mayes uncovered that the Singapura may not, in fact, be a naturally occurring street fashionista but rather an Abyssinian–Burmese cross, selectively bred into what we recognise today.

RELATED: THE WEIRD & WONDERFUL LYKOI

Whether she descended from local “drain cats” or from carefully bred Abyssinian–Burmese ancestors, one thing is clear: she has always carried a certain sparkle. She even became the mascot of the Singapore Tourism Board, because who better to represent warmth and welcome than the cat who never wants to be alone?

What Does the Singapura Cat Look Like?

Singapura cat size and weight explained

Her delicate bone structure, petite frame, and kitten-like face all contribute to her reputation as the world’s smallest cat breed, a feat she wears like a crown.

So, let’s discuss proportions because couture is, after all, about fit. The Singapura weighs between 1,8 to 2,7 kilograms. That’s:
✔ Lighter than a big tub of ice cream
✔ Lighter than your Christmas gammon
✔ Lighter even, than your handbag

Distinctive coat, eyes, and colouring details

This is the fashion girlie of the feline world. Every day is a good fur day. A Singapura basically wears designer couture 24/7.

A fine, short coat with sepia-toned ticked tabby colouring; shimmering, understated, and luxurious. Like champagne silk under runway lights. Each strand is banded with alternating shades, giving the Singapura a soft glow even when she’s plotting mischief.

The eyes are large, almond-shaped and come in hues of hazel, green, or gold. They’re framed by dark “eyeliner” that every makeup artist would envy.

What Is the Singapura Cat’s Personality Like?

Hyperactive, In-Your-Space, 24/7 Content Creator Energy

If you’re imagining a quiet, demure, handbag-sized cat who lounges on satin pillows like a debutante, think again. The Singapura is the type to stride into your kitchen, step directly onto your cookbook, and announce her presence with a musical, insistent chirp.

    She is hyperactive.
    She is affectionate.
    She is endlessly in-your-space.

Think of her as the model who’s both the star of the runway and the life of the afterparty. This cat doesn’t enjoy being alone. If you have a bustling home full of laughter and people floating in and out of rooms, she will thrive. If your home is quiet and you travel often, not so much.

If the Singapura were human, she’d be:

    • That friend who always wants to go somewhere
    • The cousin who FaceTimes you at 11pm “just to check in”
    • A child on Christmas morning after three cans of Creme Soda

How Singapura cats behave with kids and other pets

The Singapura is great with kids. She loves other cats, guests, strangers, delivery drivers, and even the people you follow on TikTok. She adores being part of “the action,” which makes her wonderful with families and multi-pet homes.

How to Care for a Singapura Cat

    Grooming and maintenance needs

Good news: her coat is a low-maintenance masterpiece. She’s like that friend who rolls out of bed with perfect hair; a weekly brush is all she needs.

Feeding: What do Singapura cats eat?

Like any couture model, the Singapura needs high-quality nutrition. Protein-rich, balanced, and portion-appropriate for her petite frame. Treats are allowed but avoid overfeeding. Always check in with your vet if you are unsure about portions.

    Daily enrichment and companionship tips

The Singapura is not a “see you later” cat. She’s more of a “where are you going and can I come?” cat.

To keep her happy, you’ll need:

    • interactive play daily
    • climbing structures
    • puzzle feeders
    • soft blankets
    • Feed well
    • Visit the vet
    • Give her stimulation.

She’ll also need your attention, loads of it. If you don’t keep her busy, she will keep herself busy. And by busy, we mean redecorating your living room.

    Are Singapura Cats Healthy?

    Common Singapura cat health issues

Singapuras are generally robust but have a few notable health problems:

    • Pyruvate kinase deficiency, causing anaemia
    • Cardiomyopathy, affecting the heart
    • Uterine inertia in queens, sometimes requiring C-sections

    Average Singapura cat lifespan

She boasts an impressive average lifespan of 16 years, long enough to appear in at least 16 annual family photoshoots, looking flawless in each.

How regular vet check-ups can help detect problems early

Her health issues are predictable and treatable if caught early. Routine check-ups are essential to keep her petite heart beating strong and her youthful energy in full sparkle mode.

    Are Singapura Cats Hypoallergenic?

Because of their tiny size and short coat, many allergy sufferers cope better with Singapuras than fluffier breeds. They shed less than many breeds, but dander is still present. If allergies are a concern, meet a Singapura before committing to the full-season couture collection.

Is the Singapura the Right Pet for You?

Ideal home environments and owner types

    Pick this breed if:

    • You want a playful, affectionate cat
    • Your home is lively
    • You love interaction
    • You don’t mind a cat supervising all your activities
    • You’re looking for a fun, high-energy companion.

    Avoid this breed if:

    • You want a “quiet, independent” cat
    • Your home is empty most of the day
    • You don’t want a cat walking across your laptop during Teams calls.

    Singapura: Tiny Cat, Massive Personality

A Singapura isn’t just a pet, she’s a catwalk queen. Compact but commanding. Small but emotionally expansive. And when she loves you, she loves you with her whole (tiny) heart.

Why You Need Cat Insurance for Your Singapura

Think a small cat equals small bills… think again! When your companion is as delicate as a couture gown and as energetic as a toddler on a sugar high, pet insurance is your best fashion accessory.

    Because of her:

    • tendency to get into EVERYTHING
    • high energy
    • queenly “I deserve the best” energy.

  • THINK TWICE BEFORE GIVING A PET AS A GIFT

THINK TWICE BEFORE GIVING A PET AS A GIFT

South Africans love giving dramatic gifts. If we could, we’d wrap up Table Mountain with a bow and put it under someone’s tree. But when it comes to pets, maybe just… maybe… we need to slow our roll. Because giving someone a whole living creature with emotions, bathroom habits, and a diet that costs more than your car’s full tank is not the same as handing over a scented candle from Mr Price Home (ok, fine… @Home🙄).

Giving a pet as a gift often begins with the purest of intentions. You imagine joy. Healing. Companionship. But intentions don’t wash the food bowls, pay the vets and pet insurance premiums, vacuum the fur or navigate the emotional landscape of caring for another living being. Pets are love, but they are also long-term responsibility. Gifting that responsibility to someone who did not ask for it? Well, that’s where problems begin.

Pets aren’t accessories, they’re family members with needs. These responsibilities may feel natural to someone ready for a pet. For someone unprepared, they feel like pressure.

The Most Common Pets Gifted at Christmas

Firstly, let’s unpack the most common gifted pets and why “cute” doesn’t always mean compatible.

    1. Puppies: adorable, sociable, energetic… and demanding.
    2. Kittens: sweet, curious, and often underestimated.
    3. Rabbits: gentle, but require complex care and space.
    4. Hamsters: fragile and nocturnal, unsuitable for small children.
    5. Guinea pigs: social animals who must live in pairs.
    6. Fish: sensitive to water quality, temperature, and proper habitat.
    7. Budgies/Parrots: intelligent, loud, and long-lived companions.
    8. Tortoises: need careful diets and can live for decades.
    9. Reptiles: require specialised environments and informed owners.

So no, “cute” is not a measure of compatibility. Compatibility grows from intention, preparation, and choice.

RELATED:HOW TO CHOOSE THE PERFECT PET FOR YOUR FAMILY

What Many Don’t Consider Before Gifting a Pet

    A dog needs walks.
    A cat needs stimulation.
A bird needs companionship and enrichment.
A fish needs water that doesn’t resemble the Vaal Dam.

We get it. You saw a fluffy puppy online and thought, “This will cure my bestie or parent’s empty-nest syndrome AND look super-cute on Instagram.” But here’s the problem: They might not want a pet. Dad might want silence. Mom might want to travel. Bestie might be allergic. Many people imagine the romantic bioscope version of pet gifting: A delighted recipient, a joyful tear, a perfect bond. The reality is more complex. The recipient may not be ready. They may not be in a season of their life where they can commit to the needs of a pet, even if they adore animals.

    Baby animals grow up

Imagine gifting your friend a hamster. Small, cute, harmless. Except later they discover hamsters are nocturnal and run marathons at 2am on a squeaky wheel that sounds like it’s transmitting messages to space.

Or you give a teenager a rabbit because “it’s low maintenance.” Except rabbits chew things. Skirtings, shoes, phone chargers, basically anything with sentimental or financial value.

That tiny puppy? Soon it’s a boisterous adult who needs space, training and dedication.

That tortoise? It may outlive everyone in the house.

And then there’s the money factor. That “free kitten” comes with:

    • Vaccinations
    • Deworming
    • Food
    • Litter
    • Vet visits
    • Sterilisation (you’re basically gifting someone a monthly vet bill)
    • And emotions. Lots of emotions.

Holidays end, but pet care never does. And a pet does not simply fit into one’s life, it shifts it. Feeding schedules, training, noise, grooming, medical care, supervision, and… and! When a pet is unwanted or unexpected, this shift creates friction. Not because the person is unkind. But because they didn’t choose the change. And care without readiness becomes stress. While pet insurance can help with the oopsies that lead to vet bills, it can’t help the “oops, maybe I wasn’t ready for this” moments.

What Happens When Pets are Given as Surprise Gifts?

The reality behind holiday pet trends

During December, many new animals are purchased or adopted in a burst of feel-good enthusiasm. Everyone wants a fluffy creature to put under a Christmas tree. But after the holidays, a quieter, more sobering pattern emerges: returns, surrenders, and abandoned pets. Suddenly reality hits harder than Eskom Stage 6. The surprise gift becomes a surprise responsibility.

Statistics of pet surrenders after Christmas

Animal welfare groups report the same heartbreaking pattern every year:

    • Puppies and kittens flood shelters in January.
    • Many were Christmas gifts the recipients didn’t want or couldn’t care for.
    • Rabbits and hamsters also get surrendered once the novelty fades.
    • Some pets are even abandoned when families go on holiday.

How impulse adoptions lead to overcrowded shelters

Shelters already struggle financially, physically, emotionally. When gifted pets arrive weeks later:

    • Kennels overflow
    • Resources stretch
    • Staff burn out
    • Older animals are overlooked
    • And the circle of heartbreak repeats.

Your cute gift becomes someone else’s crisis. While studies show that pets gifted with prior discussion fare well, pets given as complete surprises are at higher risk of being abandoned. Remember, pets are a lifetime of walks, vet visits, and unconditional love. Before you wrap up a wagging tail under the tree, take a moment to check if the recipient is ready.

We’ve got a quick, fun quiz you, your bestie, sibling, or parent can take FIRST. It’s an easy way to see if a new furry friend is truly a perfect fit, long before the ribbons and bows.

TAKE THE QUIZ: HOW TO KNOW IF YOU’RE READY FOR A PET

Better Ways to Show You Care This Holiday: Visit an Animal Shelter Instead

Invite your loved one on a meaningful outing:

    • Walk dogs
    • Socialise cats
    • Learn about the needs of different species
    • Allow them to express genuine interest (or disinterest).

A thoughtful experience often reveals more than an impulsive gift.

Volunteer your time or donate to animal welfare groups

We’re all about big-hearted pet insurance, so we know that it isn’t just about protecting your own furry family, it’s also about helping pets in need. So, consider supporting a cause close to your heart. Shelters and rescue groups always appreciate:

    • Food donations
    • Blankets and bedding
    • Cleaning supplies
    • Medical contributions
    • Transport help
    • Or simply your time and care.

Every little act counts. By giving back, you’re extending love and care beyond your home —and that’s exactly what responsible, compassionate pet parenting is all about.

A Pet Is for Life, Not for the Holidays

A pet is a 10–20-year commitment, not a seasonal fling. The best gifts are things people want, not things they must rearrange their entire lives around. Pets should never arrive wrapped in the weight of someone else’s expectations.

    If the person:

    • wants a pet
    • has researched the pet
    • has the budget
    • has the time,

    then go for it!

Otherwise? Buy them chocolate. A book. A spa voucher. Even a pair of socks. Just not a living creature. The most loving thing we can do is respect the profound commitment of animal guardianship. Gifting one should honour both the human and the animal in equal measure.

Now, we’re not saying everyone who gets a pet as a gift surrenders it. Research actually shows many keep them, if they wanted them in the first place. However, the problems arise in cases of impulse gifting.

So, if you’re really considering gifting someone a pet, the least you can do is ensure you also give them pet insurance from dotsure.co.za along with the leash. Contact us to ensure they enjoy more moments together with fewer money worries and learn more about our affordable plans.

  • THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CLASSIC, VINTAGE, AND ANTIQUE CARS

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CLASSIC, VINTAGE, AND ANTIQUE CARS

For car enthusiasts, owning something rare and full of character is part of preserving history. Whether you’ve got your eye on a 1930s roadster or a 1980s icon, knowing the difference between classic, vintage, and antique cars can help you appreciate your ride even more. It also comes in handy when you’re sorting out things like registration, valuations, or car insurance for your vehicle.

    Quick Car Age Class Definitions

    What is a Classic Car?

A classic car generally falls between 20 and 40 years old, though many purists stretch that further. These cars, like 1960s Mustangs, 1970s Beetles, and early 1990s BMWs, represent eras that shaped motoring culture. They’re often admired for design, performance, or just the nostalgia they bring back every time you turn the key.

    What is a Vintage Car?

When someone talks about a vintage car, they’re usually referring to vehicles built between 1919 and 1930. These beauties mark the shift from early motorised transport to the first true cars, crafted with precision and packed with personality. Think of long bonnets, upright grilles, and gleaming chrome.

    What is an Antique Car?

Antique cars are usually those built before 1919, and they’re as rare as they are remarkable. These vehicles trace the origins of motoring itself, with hand-built machines that paved the way for everything that came after them. They’re less about speed and more about preserving the craftsmanship and history of the very first automobiles.

    Classic vs Vintage Cars

While both vintage and classic cars have a timeless appeal, there are a few key differences that set them apart:

    Category

    Vintage Cars

    Classic Cars

    Era & Engineering

Built in the pre-war era, featuring mechanical brakes and early engine technology. These cars represent the foundations of automotive design.  Produced post-war and beyond, with hydraulic systems, electrical components and more refined handling. The improvement in comfort and drivability is easy to feel behind the wheel.

    Originality vs Modification

Typically kept in original condition to preserve authenticity and historical accuracy.  Often restored or modified (“resto-mod”) to blend vintage charm with modern performance and comfort.

    Example Models

Ford Model A, Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, Bentley 4.5 Litre, and Bugatti Type 35  Jaguar E-Type, Mercedes-Benz 280SL, Volkswagen Beetle, BMW E30 3-Series, and Mazda MX-5

South African Context: Car Age Classes

Here in South Africa, enthusiasts often refer to the South African Vintage and Veteran Association (SAVVA) system to classify older vehicles by age.

Ancestor, Veteran, Vintage, Post-Vintage, and Post-War Cars

    • Ancestor (pre-1905): The true trailblazers.
    • Veteran (1905–1918): Early motor engineering and limited production.
    • Vintage (1919–1930): The golden age of design and innovation.
    • Post-Vintage (1931–1945): Refined craftsmanship and the rise of luxury.
    • Post-War (1946–1960): Stronger, sleeker, and more accessible than ever.

These categories help determine eligibility for rallies, club membership, and heritage plates. So, they’re worth knowing if you’re joining the classic car community.

    Insurance Considerations for Older Vehicles

Owning a classic, vintage, or antique car often means you’ll need specialised insurance. These policies consider factors such as your car’s age, rarity, and usage.

While dotsure.co.za offers comprehensive car insurance for vehicles up to 25 years old, it’s still worth protecting your ride. Whether it’s your everyday runabout or a weekend favourite, get a quick online quote or contact us to explore insurance options built around your lifestyle.

SCARY ROAD ACCIDENT STATS IN SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa’s road accident stats are so much more than numbers on a page. They’re reminders of the everyday risks we all face when we sit behind the wheel. Our roads are dangerous enough. Now add some students coming home from a party or a few quick glances at some WhatsApps in peak-hour traffic, and you’ve got a recipe for disaster and devastation. Let’s unpack our road accident stats and how to stay safe on Mzansi’s roads.

The Reality of Road Deaths in South Africa

Every year, on average, 14,000 people lose their lives on South African roads.

And the scary truth is that it’s not the roads or the cars that are the problem; it’s how we drive. “South Africa has some of the worst road traffic injury statistics in the world,” says Arrive Alive. “Each year, millions of people are killed or injured on our roads.”

Causes of Car Accidents in South Africa

    Drunk Driving Accident Stats

Alcohol remains the biggest villain on our roads, linked to approximately 65% of fatal crashes. Even just one drink slows your reactions and clouds your judgment. The idea of “just one” isn’t harmless; it’s dangerous.

Texting While Driving Stats and Impact

You wouldn’t close your eyes for 10 seconds while driving. Yet that’s precisely what happens when you look at your phone while going 120 on the N2… You’re effectively driving blind for let’s say 100 metres. No meme or group chat is worth the crash caused by texting while you’re driving.

Fatigue Driving Stats: The Silent Risk

Studies show fatigue can be as impairing as alcohol. Long stretches of road, late nights, or certain medications can cause “microsleeps” where you lose focus for just a few seconds… and that’s all it takes.

    What is Microsleep?

It’s when your brain flips rapidly between being asleep and being awake. The episodes last only a few seconds, and often, you aren’t aware of them. These brief and involuntary periods of sleep can lead to a loss of control and potentially fatal accidents,

    Understanding Car Accident Fatalities

Behind every statistic is a person with a name, family, partner, or friend, forever changed. Cause of death statistics point mainly to drunk driving, distraction, and fatigue, but the truth is that these high numbers are preventable.

And it’s not only drivers who suffer. Passengers, especially children, are at risk too. Car seat death statistics show just how vital proper restraints are. A poorly fitted seatbelt or skipping a child safety seat can mean the difference between life and death in a crash.

Data also reveals that approximately 35-40% of road deaths in SA are pedestrian deaths. That’s right. Innocent pedestrians are a part of these scary road accident stats, too.

How to Stay Safe on South African Roads

    • Skip the drink. Alcohol and driving do not mix.
    • Take breaks. On long trips, stop every two hours to stretch, snack, and reset your focus.
    • Ditch distractions. Put your phone in the boot if you can’t resist the ping. We’re being serious!
    • Check your meds. Some prescriptions can slow reaction times, so read the fine print to ensure you are fit to drive.

    It’s Not Just a Stat. It’s a Life

Yes, the road accident stats in SA are scary, but the good news is that we can change them. Every time we choose to drive sober, rest well, and keep our eyes on the road, we’re lowering those numbers. Insurance can help too.

With dotsure.co.za car insurance and the Smart Driver Programme, we’re encouraging a generation of smarter drivers who make smarter moves behind the wheel and are rewarded! You want to know more? Contact us and ask our friendly consultants about game-changing cover.

  • THE PSYCHOLOGY BEHIND ROAD RAGE

    THE PSYCHOLOGY BEHIND ROAD RAGE

Have you ever caught yourself muttering choice words at the driver who cut you off, holding up a choice finger out your window? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. The psychology behind road rage isn’t just about bad tempers and traffic jams. It’s a mix of stress, emotions, and, let’s be honest, a little bit of ego.

At dotsure.co.za, we’re not here to wag our finger (the pointy one, not the other one you use on the road). We’d rather help you understand why road rage happens, what it does to your mental health, and how to keep your cool behind the wheel. Yes, even when someone forgets how indicators work, or that their cars have them.

    What Is Road Rage?

Road Rage: Meaning and Common Examples

So, what’s the official meaning of road rage? It’s that sudden violent anger on the road that boils over into aggressive driving, or even full-blown confrontations. Have you ever watched the Netflix series Beef? Now, that’s a story of road rage gone to the extreme!

    Common examples include:

    • Shouting, hooting, or “creative” hand gestures
    • Tailgating to “teach someone a lesson”
    • Cutting others off intentionally
    • Getting out of your car to confront another driver angrily.

    Eye-Opening Road Rage Facts

Here are a few road rage facts that might surprise you:

    • Studies show men under 30 are the most prone to road rage.
    • Rush-hour traffic is the top trigger for aggressive driving.
    • Road rage can spike your heart rate and blood pressure in seconds.

    The Psychology Behind the Rage

    Common Causes of Road Rage

    • Traffic jams
    • Running late
    • Feeling disrespected
    • Personal stress

    Stress, Anonymity, and Cognitive Biases

Psychologists point out three key factors:

    • Stress: The higher your stress, the lower your patience.
    • Anonymity: People feel “less seen” in cars, so they act out.
    • Cognitive bias: We assume others drive badly on purpose, but excuse ourselves with “oops.” You know that “oops, I was in the wrong lane, you have to let me in” vs “how can they just push in like that!”

Effects of Road Rage on Mental Health

    Short-Term Reactions vs Long-Term Stress

In the moment, road rage can cause:

    • Adrenaline spikes
    • Aggressive outbursts
    • Risky driving behaviour

Over time, it may lead to:

    • High blood pressure
    • Anxiety
    • Emotional exhaustion

Daily exposure to rage-filled driving leaves you mentally drained. That’s not just bad for your mood, it’s bad for your health too.

Dangers and Consequences of Road Rage

    Legal, Financial, and Safety Risks

The dangers of road rage go far beyond an angry hand gesture. It can lead to:

    • Accidents and injuries
    • Criminal charges (assault, reckless driving)
    • Insurance claims that spike your premiums

Imagine smashing your bumper because your ego took control of the wheel…

    Creating a Calmer Driving Environment

Keep your car a stress-free zone. You could include some comfy seats, your favourite playlist, maybe even a calming air freshener or some incense. If you feel yourself boiling, pull over and reset.

    • What do you call road rage in a Smart car? A little temper.

    Final Thoughts: Mind Over Motor

  • SUPERSTITIONS ABOUT BLACK CATS AND OTHER ANIMALS

SUPERSTITIONS ABOUT BLACK CATS AND OTHER ANIMALS

Animals have always fascinated humans, but sometimes that fascination turns into fear. From whispers of witchcraft to omens of bad luck, myths about black cats and other creatures have been passed down through generations. But here’s the truth: behind the mystery is simply an animal deserving love, care, and protection

What Is the Superstition About Black Cats?

Black cats have one of the most infamous reputations in folklore. They’re the centre of countless tales of luck, both good and bad.

In medieval Europe, black cats were linked to witchcraft. People believed they were witches’ companions or even witches transformed into animal form. As these ideas spread, so did fear of the black cat. In parts of Africa, some traditions carried similar warnings, while others viewed them as protective symbols. In ancient Egypt, black cats were deeply respected and associated with the goddess Bastet, a protector of homes and families.

Why Are People Scared of Black Cats?

The biggest reason is simple: fear of the unknown. Their dark coats made them harder to see at night, fuelling eerie associations.

    Separating Truth from Folklore:

    Myth  Fact
A black cat crossing your path means bad luck.  In many cultures, it’s actually a sign of protection.
Black cats are tied to witchcraft and evil spirits.  They’re just as cuddly and playful as any other cat.
Black cats are less friendly than other cats.  Personality is shaped by the individual cat, not its coat colour.
Black cats are harder to photograph.  With the right lighting, their glossy coats look stunning in photos.
Black cats don’t get adopted as often.  Shelters note this trend, but awareness campaigns are helping more black cats find loving homes.

Often, it’s less about the animal and more about stories people grew up with.

Other Animal Superstitions You May Have Heard Of

Black cats may take centre stage, but plenty of animals have their own myths.

Seeing an Owl at Night Superstition

Across many cultures, an owl hooting at night was seen as an omen of death or bad news. Yet today, we know owls play a vital role in ecosystems by keeping rodent populations in check.

    Snake in the House Superstition

A snake slithering indoors has long been seen as an omen, sometimes of misfortune, sometimes of transformation. While it might startle you, many snakes are harmless and even beneficial for controlling pests.

    Spider Superstitions and Omens

Spiders often feature in folklore around wealth or misfortune. In some cultures, seeing a spider was believed to bring money, while others linked them to danger. The truth? Spiders are incredible little critters.

SPRING REFRESH: HOW TO DEEP CLEAN YOUR CAR

Spring has arrived and it’s time to throw open the windows, shake out the dust, and give your car the care it deserves. Just like keeping your car insurance up to date gives you peace of mind, giving your car a proper spring refresh makes every drive feel brand new.

Why Your Car Deserves a Spa Day

Life happens in your car. From coffee runs to road trips, it takes on crumbs, stains, dust, and more. A deep clean helps to:

    • Protect your car’s value by preventing wear and tear.
    • Improve your driving comfort with a fresher, cleaner environment.
    • Boost safety by improving visibility and removing allergens.

It’s basically self-care, but for your car.

The Ultimate Deep-Clean Checklist for Your Car

Grab your vacuum, microfibre cloths, and a little elbow grease.

    • Declutter: Remove everything from the cabin, boot, and glove box.
    • Vacuum thoroughly: Get into the crevices under seats and mats.
    • Wipe down surfaces: Use an interior-safe cleaner for dashboards, doors, and consoles.
    • Detail small areas: Focus on overlooked spots such as vents and roof lining.
    • Wash and polish the exterior: Don’t forget the wheels and tyres.

Headlight Glow-Up: Cleaning the Inside of Your Car’s Headlights

Foggy headlights can reduce visibility at night. To clean them:

    • Mix baking soda with toothpaste and gently rub onto the inner lens (use a soft cloth).
    • Rinse with warm water and wipe dry.
    • For stubborn grime, consider a headlight restoration kit.

Roof Rescue: Cleaning Your Car’s Interior Ceiling

Your car’s ceiling (headliner) often traps odours and stains.

    • Lightly vacuum to remove loose dust.
    • Spot-clean with a fabric-safe cleaner and a microfiber cloth. Avoid soaking the area, as too much moisture can loosen the adhesive or cause mould.
    • For a fresh scent, finish with a gentle fabric spray.

Seat TLC: How to Clean Car Seats Like a Pro

    Different materials need different treatments.

    • Fabric seats: Vacuum first, then use an upholstery cleaner. Blot stains instead of scrubbing to avoid spreading them.
    • Leather seats: Use a leather-safe cleaner and conditioner to prevent cracking.
    • Synthetic seats: A mild soap and water solution works best. Dry with a clean towel.

Fresh Air Fix: Cleaning Out Those Car Vents

Dusty vents blow allergens straight into your face. No thanks!

    • Use a soft brush or cotton swabs to loosen dust.
    • Spray compressed air into the vent to push out hidden dirt.
    • Finish with an antibacterial spray for freshness.

Shine On: The Best Way to Wash Your Car’s Exterior

A good exterior wash makes your car shine and protects the paintwork.

    • Rinse with water to remove loose dirt.
    • Use a two-bucket method: one for soapy water, one for rinsing your sponge.
    • Don’t forget the wheels and rims, as they collect the most grime.
    • Finish with a wax or polish for long-lasting shine and protection.

Final Touches: Keep That Clean-Car Feeling Longer

    • Work top to bottom: Always start with the roof and work your way down.
    • Microfibre cloths are your friend: They reduce streaks and scratches.
    • Protect your work: Consider a car cover or regular washes to maintain that fresh look.
    • Schedule seasonal deep cleans: Just like a service check, they keep your car in great shape year-round.

While you’re giving your car a little love, don’t forget about its protection too. With the right insurance, you’ll have peace of mind knowing your ride is covered.

HIGHWAY HERITAGE: CAR MODIFICATIONS SEEN IN SA

If you’ve driven on South African roads, you’ve probably noticed cars that stand out from the crowd. Modifying cars has become a way for drivers to express personality and pride through their rides.

But before exploring common car mods, it’s worth remembering that some auto alterations can void your extended car warranty. That’s why it’s always smart to know what’s safe, what’s legal, and what might cost you more in the long run.

Car Modification Culture in South Africa

South Africans love individuality, and our cars are no exception. From budget-friendly hatchbacks to luxury sedans, drivers across the country put their own stamp on their vehicles. This culture blends global automotive trends with uniquely local flavours. For some, it’s performance upgrades that shave seconds off drag times. For others, it’s cosmetic tweaks to show off at the next car meet.

Modified Cars and Decorations: Trends Seen on Local Roads

South African roads are a showcase of creativity. Some of the most common mods you’ll spot include:

    • Lowered suspension: Popular with young drivers who want their cars to sit closer to the ground for that sleek, sporty vibe.
    • Alloy rims and custom tyres: Bigger, shinier rims are a classic upgrade, often paired with low-profile tyres.
    • Window tinting: Both stylish and practical in our sunny climate, though it must meet legal visibility requirements.
    • Sound systems: Car audio competitions are huge in SA, with some setups shaking the tar beneath your feet.
    • Car wraps and decals: From matte black finishes to full-on graphic wraps, these give a car a brand-new personality.
    • Spoilers and body kits: A popular choice for turning everyday sedans and hatchbacks into “wannabe racers”.

Is It Legal to Modify Your Car in South Africa?

Yes, car modifications are legal in South Africa, but only if they comply with road safety regulations. For example, you can lower your car’s suspension, but if it compromises clearance or handling, your vehicle may fail a roadworthy test. Similarly, engine and exhaust mods must not exceed noise and emissions limits.

Is Car Wrapping Legal in South Africa?

Absolutely! Car wrapping is legal and widely used, not just for styling but also for business branding. However, your wrap colour and design must not resemble official emergency vehicles, and any changes to the car’s base colour should be updated on your vehicle registration documents.

What Is the Most Commonly Modded Car?

Across South Africa, Volkswagen Golf GTIs, Polos, and Toyota Corollas dominate the modification scene. Affordable, reliable, and easy to customise, these cars are favourites at car shows and on city streets. Bakkies such as the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger are also popular, often fitted with aftermarket bumpers, lift kits, and off-road gear for weekend adventures.

What’s in a Name? Mzansi’s Car Nicknaming Culture

From taxis to hatchbacks to droptops, South Africans rarely call a car by its “proper” manufacturer name. Instead, we invent names that tell stories, poke fun, or capture the essence of the car. It’s a tradition that’s been passed down, and every nickname carries a little piece of our culture.

    Gusheshe Meaning and Local Legend

Ask any petrolhead about “Gusheshe” and they’ll probably break into a grin. This nickname belongs to the BMW 325iS (E30), a legend in SA’s spinning and drifting scene. Revered as the king of doughnuts, the Gusheshe is an icon that represents township pride, adrenaline, and a whole lot of tyre smoke.

Names of Cars in South Africa That Tell a Story

    • Tjor / Itransi: Everyday slang for “car,” but you’ll only hear it on local roads.
    • Skedonk / Skorokoro: Those old faithfuls that make more noise than movement. You drive them with the radio up so you don’t hear the rattles.
    • Slahla: Our proudly South African word for convertibles. “Slahla” means “to throw away,” as in throwing away the roof.

Mzansi Cars and the Sound of “Vrr Phaa!”

No nickname list would be complete without the Vrr Phaa! If you’ve ever heard a VW Golf GTI change gears, you know exactly what it means. That sharp “whoosh-bang” between shifts is music to Mzansi ears. Today, “Vrr Phaa!” is used for most performance cars with dual-clutch gearboxes.

    Honourable Mentions

Not every nickname is mainstream, but they’re still worth a nod.

    • Molo Fish: Ford Cortina
    • Anaconda: Mercedes-Benz S-Class (long and sleek)
    • Zola Budd: Toyota Corolla (because it just keeps running)
    • Starter Pack: VW Polo (the go-to first car for many)
    • Tony Yengeni: Mercedes ML-Class (named after the politician)
    • Caracara: VW Golf, inspired by the hit song

Why South Africans Love Giving Cars Nicknames

Cars in SA are part of the family, part of our communities, and part of our stories. Giving them nicknames makes them memorable, relatable, and uniquely ours.

Understanding Your Rights When Pulled Over

In South Africa, you must stop when instructed by a uniformed traffic officer or police official. This isn’t optional. But while you’re obligated to stop, you also have rights to protect you from unlawful treatment.

    • You can ask for identification from the officer. They must produce an official appointment certificate.
    • You have the right to know why you were stopped, whether it’s a routine check or suspicion of an offence.
    • You cannot be forced to pay cash on the spot for a fine. EFT or payment at the traffic department is the correct process.

Roadblocks in South Africa: What’s Legal and What’s Not

    • K78 Roadblocks: These are planned and legally authorised by the National or Provincial Commissioner. Officers here have broader powers. They can search vehicles without a warrant if they have reasonable suspicion.
    • Informal Checkpoints: These are your random license or sobriety checks. Officers cannot randomly search your car without consent unless they have probable cause.

Pro Tip: If you’re unsure whether it’s a K78, politely ask for the authorisation certificate. Yes, you’re allowed to do that.

The Difference Between Roadblocks and Roadside Checks

    • Roadblocks are fixed points with multiple officers and signage, usually checking licenses and registrations or enforcing laws.
    • Roadside checks are usually just a single officer stopping cars for quick compliance checks such as licenses, tyres, lights or safety belts.

What Traffic Officers Can and Cannot Do

    They can:
✔ Ask for your driver’s license and car registration.
✔ Issue fines for valid traffic violations.
✔ Impound a vehicle only under certain legal conditions (eg, if the car is unroadworthy).

    They cannot:
✖ Demand bribes or cash on the spot.
✖ Search your phone without a warrant or strong suspicion.
    ✖ Arrest you without cause.

RELATED: WHAT MAKES A CAR UNROADWORTHY? HERE ARE 8 SIGNS

Search and Seizure: Know Your Rights

Officers may only search your vehicle if:

    • It’s a K78 roadblock, or
    • They have reasonable suspicion of an offence, or
    • You give consent.

If they impound your vehicle, they must give you a written notice detailing the reason.

What To Do If Your Rights Are Violated at a Roadblock

    • Stay calm.
    • Take note of the officer’s name and badge number.
    • If possible, discreetly record the interaction. Yes, it’s legal for your own safety.
    • Report misconduct to the SAPS complaints division or a legal professional afterwards.

Practical Tips to Stay Safe and Compliant

    • Keep your license and car documents up-to-date.
    • Stay polite, even if the situation feels tense or you are frustrated.
    • Never offer a bribe. It’s a criminal offence for both parties.

Roadblocks are there to keep roads safe, but understanding your rights when pulled over can help you avoid unnecessary stress.

  • THE EASIEST WAY TO GET AN INTERNATIONAL DRIVING PERMIT

THE EASIEST WAY TO GET AN INTERNATIONAL DRIVING PERMIT

Are you planning an overseas holiday and keen on road tripping across Italy or cruising down Route 66? Then you’ll need more than just car snacks and playlists. You’ll need an international driving permit (IDP). It’s your golden ticket to legal, hassle-free driving abroad and essential to avoid awkward conversations with foreign traffic cops.

Let’s break it down, the easy-peasy way.

Can I Drive Overseas with a South African Driver’s License?

You can use that trusty little SA driver’s card only in certain countries. Most destinations will ask for an international driving permit alongside your SA licence.

Pro tip: Your SA license must be valid and not expired to apply for an IDP. A suspended or expired licence? That’s a nope.

RELATED: HOW TO CHECK YOUR DRIVING LICENCE STATUS IN SOUTH AFRICA

What Is the Easiest Way to Get an International Driver’s Permit?

Through the Automobile Association of South Africa (AA): They’ve streamlined the process so you can drop gears and disappear ASAP. Just ensure you apply before leaving the country because you can’t get one when you’re abroad.

Online: Apply for an international driving permit online here and complete the application form! We said it would be easy-peasy, right?

In-store: Use their branch locator to find the closest AA-accredited sales agents and get your international driving permit in-store.

How To Get an International Driving Permit in South Africa

    Option 1: Apply Online

Just a few clicks and you’re ready:

-A copy of your valid South African driver’s licence

-Your ID or a valid passport

-A passport-sized photo (just one per IDP type).

    • Choose your preferred collection branch.
    • Submit and wait for a ready-for-collection alert.

Heads-up: You still have to collect your IDP in person, but the paperwork is sorted ahead of time.

    Option 2: Apply In-Store

Do you need it in a hurry? If you visit a participating AA Travel Experience outlet, you can leave there with your IDP in hand after about 10-30 minutes.

    Bring the following:

    • Your valid SA driver’s licence
    • Your ID or passport
    • A passport-sized photo (some stores can take them for you, so call ahead to check!).

    Either way, it’s easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy!

AA International Driving Permit: Some FAQs Answered

The AA is the only officially recognised issuer of IDPs in South Africa. They’ll issue your permit according to the country you’re visiting (there are different versions, depending on the destination). The most common type is the 1949 Convention IDP.

We didn’t make this up earlier. The AA also recommends always carrying both your SA licence and your IDP when driving abroad.

How Much Does an International Driving Permit From South Africa Cost?

As of 2025, the cost is approximately R350, depending on the type and the branch. Some branches might charge extra for the passport photos if you don’t bring your own.

How Long Does It Take to Get an IDP in South Africa?

The good news is that applying in person with all the right documents is instant. You’ll walk out with your permit, ready to conquer foreign roads.

The Advantages of International Driving Permits

    • The ability to drive in over 150 countries
    • Translated ID info (really helpful in non-English-speaking countries)
    • Peace of mind with car rental agencies
    • No fines for not having it where required.

    On the Road… But Smarter

Getting an international driving permit in South Africa is easier than you think and much less stressful than trying to charm a traffic officer in Paris with your Afrikaans. So, wherever you’re heading, sort out your IDP ahead of time and drive stress-free.

Speaking of driving stress-free, with dotsure.co.za car insurance, Name Your Price™ lets you choose cover that fits your budget. So, when you’re driving your own car on home soil, you’re covered and protected too!

  • 6 DRIVE-IN MOVIE THEATRES IN SOUTH AFRICA

6 DRIVE-IN MOVIE THEATRES IN SOUTH AFRICA

As the world becomes increasingly digitised, it’s easy to forget about the simple pleasures of the past. It’s time to loosen up on those “no eating in the car” rules, as we have a few drive-in movie theatre options which include the yummiest of cinema snacks!

What Is the Concept of Drive-In?

A drive-in movie theatre lets you watch films from your car, outdoors. You park in front of a big screen and tune your car radio to the movie’s audio. It’s a mix of entertainment and nostalgia, perfect for a fun date night or family outing. You can enjoy snacks, stay comfy in your own space, and take in the movie under the open sky.

Why Are Drive-in Movies Not Popular Anymore?

Drive-in movies started to decline with the rise of indoor cinemas, home streaming, and changing lifestyles. People now prefer the comfort and convenience of watching movies at home or in modern cinemas. Plus urban development and limited space made it harder for drive-ins to survive. Still, they’re making a small comeback thanks to their vintage charm and safe, outdoor setting.

Are There Any Drive-In Cinema’s Left in SA?

Yes, there are still a few drive-in movie theatres left in South Africa! It’s a fun and retro way to enjoy a night out.

    Something Good Roadhouse (Gqeberha)

Located along the scenic Marine Drive in Gqeberha. This is a local favourite known for its retro charm, delicious comfort food, and laid-back vibe. They sometimes host drive-in movie nights, combining classic cinema with a nostalgic roadhouse experience. The ultimate throwback evening out!

Bright Night Cinema (Cape Town & Johannesburg)

This company specialises in setting up outdoor movie theatres for private or corporate events. They have different packages available, which include picnic or drive-in options for a personalised experience.

    Molly Malone’s Roadhouse Drive-In (Johannesburg)

This drive-in truly brings back the nostalgia with a roadhouse, a pub, and regular movie screenings. They serve burgers and milkshakes right at your car window, the old-school way!

    The Sandton City Drive-In (Johannesburg)

Keep an eye on the schedule for Sandton City’s Ster Kinekor. A few times a year, the cinema hosts drive-in events showing the biggest blockbusters on their rooftop parking.

    Hart&Bosch Village (Hartenbos, Western Cape)

For a coastal movie night to remember, the Hartenbos Village Drive-In offers an unforgettable outdoor cinema experience. Set against the charm of the seaside town, this venue screens family favourites and blockbuster hits under the stars.

ShowMovies – George Landbou Skou Drive-in Movies (George, Western Cape)

Hosted on the last day of each month, this family-friendly drive-in in George brings back all the nostalgic feels. Complete with popcorn, hot chocolate, and even picnic baskets with wine or biltong!

  • MEN VS. WOMEN DRIVERS: WHO’S BETTER?

MEN VS. WOMEN DRIVERS: WHO’S BETTER?

Discover How Car Insurance Can Make Anyone a Better Driver

The debate over whether men or women are better drivers has been ongoing for years. Last year, we settled it: women are, in fact, the better drivers. Thanks to groundbreaking data analysis, compelling evidence debunks the myth. The study revealed that female drivers are involved in fewer accidents, practice safer driving habits, are better at parking (yes, even parallel parking) and thus have fewer insurance claims and lower premiums—go ladies!

But what if the key to being a better driver lies in having car insurance? Instead of debating who’s better, let’s explore how car insurance influences our driving habits and helps all genders become better drivers.

    The Role of Car Insurance

Peace of Mind for All Drivers

Having car insurance provides financial protection, reducing stress and anxiety when it comes to the unexpected. This peace of mind allows drivers to focus more on the road and less on the daunting financial burdens of potential accidents. An insured driver is a calmer one.

    Financial Incentives to Drive Safely

At dotsure.co.za, we reward safe driving behaviours with our Smart Driver App. By incentivizing better driving, we’re creating a community of fans who want to drive responsibly and maintain their smart driving rating because they’re rewarded for it.

    Monitoring and Accountability

One word: Telematics. To monitor a car’s driving patterns, we use a telematics device known as the dotsure.co.za Smart-Box. This provides drivers with real-time feedback and monitors things like movement, location, and behaviour. So, if you’re slamming the brakes or accelerating like an F1 driver, you won’t be rewarded.

Conclusion: The Best Drivers Are Insured Drivers

The true measure of a good driver is not about gender but about the practices and behaviours that contribute to making our South African roads safer for all.

dotsure.co.za, encourages safer driving. So, whether you’re male or female, we say the first step to becoming a better driver starts with car insurance.

  • UNDERSTANDING SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERM INSURANCE

    UNDERSTANDING SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERM INSURANCE

Safeguarding All Your Assets with Relevant Cover

In an unpredictable world where accidents, natural disasters and unforeseen circumstances can strike at any moment, insurance coverage becomes a crucial aspect of financial planning.

    Protection for Immediate Needs

Short-term insurance encompasses a variety of policies that offer coverage for a limited duration, excluding life insurance, which is long-term insurance. Short-term insurance is indispensable for anyone who owns assets. Shockingly, statistics reveal that a significant portion of vehicles on South African roads are uninsured, leaving individuals vulnerable to substantial financial losses in the event of accidents or damages.

Imagine driving an uninsured car and being involved in an accident or witnessing your home being destroyed by a devastating fire. Without insurance, you could be left grappling with significant repair or replacement costs, potentially draining your savings or pushing you into debt. Short-term insurance acts as a financial safeguard, covering expenses for repairs, replacements, or providing lump sum payouts in case of claims, depending on the policy’s terms and conditions.

Short-term insurance policies typically cover a range of areas, including car insurance, business insurance, home contents insurance, travel insurance, and pet insurance. These policies offer protection against various risks, which ensure that individuals can mitigate the financial impact of unforeseen events.

Different Types of Short-Term Insurance Policies

    • Vehicle Insurance:

Protects you against damages, theft, or loss of vehicles such as cars, motorbikes, trailers, watercraft, or caravans.

    • Home Contents Insurance:

Safeguards personal belongings within the home, including electronics, furniture and appliances, against loss, theft or damage.

    • Building Insurance:

Covers the structure of the home against perils such as fires or floods.

    • Portable Possessions Insurance:

Offers protection for valuable items such as smartphones, jewellery, or watches against theft, loss, or accidental damage.

    Understanding the Difference

While short-term insurance addresses immediate protection needs for assets and possessions, long-term insurance focuses on providing coverage for extended periods, typically involving life-changing events such as death, disability, or retirement.

Short-term insurance premiums may fluctuate annually or upon changes in circumstances, such as acquiring a new vehicle. In contrast, long-term insurance premiums remain relatively stable over the policy’s lifetime, offering consistent coverage for major events.

    Examples of Long-Term Insurance

    • Life Insurance:

Provides a lump sum payment to beneficiaries in the event of the policyholder’s death, serving as financial protection for loved ones.

    • Provident Fund:

A retirement savings fund where regular contributions accumulate over time, providing income during retirement.

    • Disability Policy:

Offers financial support in the event of temporary or permanent disability, assisting with living expenses or medical care.

    • Health Cover:

Covers medical expenses incurred due to illness or injury, alleviating the financial burden of healthcare costs.

    Making Informed Choices

When selecting insurance coverage, it’s crucial to assess individual needs and risks carefully. Factors such as driving history, property location, and lifestyle influence the determination of insurance premiums.

Investing in both short-term and long-term insurance provides peace of mind and financial security for the future. Whether one is facing a minor mishap or preparing for significant life events, having comprehensive insurance coverage ensures protection against unforeseen circumstances, safeguarding assets and loved ones.

    7 TIPS FOR A PET-FRIENDLY EASTER

Have a Hoppy Time With the Whole Family

As Easter approaches, many of us look forward to festive activities, delicious treats, and quality time with loved ones. But amidst the excitement, it’s important not to forget about our furry companions who are just as much a part of the family. With a little creativity and consideration, you can craft celebrations that are pet-friendly and inclusive!

    Easter Egg Hunt

Egg hunts are a classic Easter tradition that can be adapted to include your four-legged friends. Instead of traditional eggs, opt for plastic ones filled with pet-friendly treats like aromatic biscuits or small bits of cooked chicken. Ensure the eggs have holes for the scent to escape and are large enough to prevent accidental swallowing. Hide them around your home or yard and watch as your pet eagerly sniffs them out. If your pet tends to chew on plastic, simply hide the treats around without the eggs.

    Buntastic Photoshoot

Capture precious memories by organising an Easter-themed photoshoot for your pet. Whether it’s dressing them up in bunny ears or simply posing them next to festive props, you’re sure to get some adorable photos to cherish for years to come.

    Easter Brunch

Treat your pet to their very own Easter brunch with pet-friendly pancakes or smoothies. If you prefer dining out, look for pet-friendly restaurants that offer special menus for fluffy companions.

    Pet-Friendly Easter Events

Participate in pet-friendly Easter events in your community if your pet enjoys socialising. Dress them up in cute costumes if they’re comfortable in clothing, but always prioritise their comfort. Ensure they’re well-behaved and bring along water to keep them hydrated.

    Movie Marathon

For a cosy celebration at home, snuggle up with your pet and enjoy a movie marathon featuring Easter-themed films. From classics like Easter Parade to animated favourites like Hop, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

    Homemade Treats

Get creative in the kitchen and whip up some homemade Easter treats for your pet. Experiment with Easter-themed shapes like bunnies and eggs, or try out new recipes tailored to their tastes and dietary needs.

    Botanical Gardens

If you’re looking for an outdoor activity, consider visiting a pet-friendly botanical garden where you and your pet can enjoy the beauty of nature together. Remember to keep your pet on a leash and follow the garden’s rules to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

This Easter weekend, include your pets in the festivities and make cherished memories together. With a little thought and planning, you can create a celebration that’s both fun and meaningful for the whole family.

  • 11 TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE ON SOUTH AFRICA’S ROADS

11 TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE ON SOUTH AFRICA’S ROADS

Everything to Keep in Mind When Navigating Mzansi

South Africa boasts the world’s tenth-largest road network, spanning an impressive 746 978 kilometres. However, with extensive roadways and bustling traffic, safety should always be a top priority for drivers. Whether you’re commuting daily or exploring scenic routes, we’ve gathered some essential road safety tips to keep in mind.

    General Road Safety

    • Keep Your Ride in Check:

Before you hit the road, give your vehicle a once-over to make sure everything’s running smoothly.

    • Remember the Essentials:

Keep your driver’s license and insurance details on hand.

    • Stay Fresh, Stay Alert:

If you’re hitting the road for a long haul, make sure you’re well-rested. Take breaks, stretch those legs, and keep hydrated.

    • Follow the Rules:

Stick to speed limits, keep your distance from the car ahead, and keep an eye out for anything unexpected, especially after sunset.

    • Strap In:

Seat belts are non-negotiable. Buckle up, and make sure your passengers are safely strapped in too.

    Towing Trailers and Caravans

    • Check, Check, Check:

Before you hit the road, give your trailer or caravan a once-over. Including lights, brakes, and registration.

    • Weight Distribution:

Keep that load balanced and within the weight limit. A wobbly caravan on the highway can be dangerous.

    • Take it Easy:

Towing means taking it slow and steady. Give yourself plenty of time to manoeuvre and watch out for sharp turns.

    For Motorbike Riders

    • Dress for Success:

All the gear, all the time. Safety gear is a literal lifesaver.

    • Stay Visible:

Assume you’re invisible to other drivers and ride defensively. Keep your distance and signal your intentions.

    • Keep Your Cool:

Anticipate potential hazards and give yourself room to react.

From bustling city streets to rugged rural roads, South Africa’s highways and byways offer a treasure trove of adventure. But remember, safety comes first, second, and third!

  • IS IT TIME FOR A SECOND CAR?

IS IT TIME FOR A SECOND CAR?

Reasons Why Two Cars Are Better Than One

While the decision to add a second car to a household is a personal one, influenced by factors such as location, employment status, and individual preferences, it’s crucial to carefully consider the pros and cons before taking the plunge into dual car ownership.

    Affordability

Owning a vehicle involves costs beyond the initial purchase price. These include insurance, registration, depreciation, taxes, fuel, maintenance, and repairs. While purchasing a second car may increase these costs, the impact on fuel and general maintenance might not be significantly higher if the driving distance is split between the two vehicles. However, the make, model, and year of the second car play a significant role in determining these long-term expenses.

    Utility and Convenience

A second car can serve various purposes, making it a practical choice for some individuals. For example, someone running a landscaping business with a family of four may require a work vehicle and a family-friendly vehicle. In emergencies, having a backup car ensures uninterrupted daily life, offering peace of mind when the primary vehicle faces unexpected issues.

    Enjoyment

For those who view driving as more than just a means of transportation, owning a second vehicle can provide the freedom to choose a vehicle that aligns with their driving preferences. Whether it’s a sports car for weekend joyrides or simply having the luxury of choosing between different driving experiences, a second car adds an element of enjoyment to the driving routine.

    Longevity

Owning a second vehicle can potentially extend the lifespan of both cars. If the total driving distance remains constant, distributing it between two cars results in less wear and tear on each vehicle. While regular maintenance tasks like oil changes and tyre rotations are still necessary, they become less frequent, contributing to longer-lasting and better-performing vehicles.

Before making the decision to add a second car to your household, evaluate your needs, desires, and financial constraints.

  • 5 FACTS ABOUT RABIES

    5 FACTS ABOUT RABIES

What you need to know about the deadly rabies virus.

It’s Rabies Awareness Month, and we’re bringing you the facts! Rabies is a serious viral disease that can affect both animals and humans. There’s essential information that every pet owner should know about rabies to protect their pets, themselves, and their communities.

    What is Rabies?

Rabies is a viral disease that affects the nervous system. It is typically transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal via bites, scratches or open wounds. The virus travels along the nerves to the brain, leading to severe neurological symptoms and eventual death.

    5 Facts About Rabies

    1. Range of Hosts:

Rabies can affect a wide range of mammals, including domestic pets like dogs and cats, as well as wildlife, such as bats, squirrels, and foxes. Any mammal can potentially carry and transmit the virus.

    1. Human Transmission:

The virus can be transmitted to humans through bites, scratches, or exposure to infected saliva. Immediate medical attention, including post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), is crucial after potential exposure. Once symptoms appear (30 to 50 days after being bitten), the disease is almost always fatal.

    1. Prevention Is Better Than a Cure:

Vaccinating your pets against rabies is essential. Regular vaccinations not only protects your pet from the disease but also helps to prevent its spread to humans and other animals. Puppies and kittens should receive their first rabies vaccine as early as 12 weeks of age.

Follow your veterinarian’s recommended vaccination schedule, as booster shots are necessary to maintain immunity and should be given annually.

    1. Dangers of Wildlife Exposure:

The other option for prevention is to avoid letting your pets roam freely and keep them indoors, especially during the evening and nighttime when wildlife is more active. Supervise outdoor activities and walks to prevent encounters with potentially infected animals.

    1. Common Symptoms:

Infected animals may display behavioural changes, including aggression, confusion, excessive drooling, and difficulty swallowing. Paralysis and staggering may also occur.

    Seeking Veterinary Care

If you suspect your pet has been exposed to rabies or is displaying abnormal behaviour, seek immediate veterinary care. Your veterinarian can determine the best course of action, which might include quarantine.

It’s imperative that even when Rabies Awareness Month comes to an end, we continue to raise awareness and share knowledge with each other. Rabies is a serious and potentially deadly disease, but with education and responsible pet ownership, we can significantly reduce its impact.

  • 5 THINGS ONLY SOUTH AFRICAN DRIVERS DO

5 THINGS ONLY SOUTH AFRICAN DRIVERS DO

Every South African knows we have our own special way of doing things – we say “shame” to cute babies, “now now” when we mean “just now” and “howzit” to say hello; but did you know we’re also unique when it comes to our driving habits?

Here are the top 5 driving habits that South Africans have. How many can you spot in yourself?

    1. Use our hazards to say ‘thank you’

Hazard lights are used to alert other drivers if you’re stopping or slowing down without warning, but did you know that you technically aren’t supposed to use your hazards for anything except an emergency?

Apart from South Africa, Japanese drivers also use their hazards to be courteous to other drivers, but the practice isn’t well-known in most countries – so if you’re the designated driver while travelling in another country, think twice before using your hazards and confusing the locals.

    2. Flash our lights to warn about a roadblock

It’s an age-old South African tradition to warn oncoming motorists about a roadblock by flashing your headlights at them, and it’s helped countless South Africans adjust their speed and save themselves a fine.

While it’s almost impossible for law officials to control whether a driver flashes their lights to warn someone, if a traffic officer spots you, you can receive a fine. Maybe.

According to court decisions on the matter, there have been conflicting judgements.

    Here’s the first judgement:

“If a motorist warns other motorists of the presence of a speed trap by flashing his lights, he interferes with the due administration of justice. According to the decision in Naidoo [1777 2 SA 123 (N)], the motorist commits an attempt to defeat the course of justice.

And the second judgement, which says the complete opposite:

However, in S v Perera [1978 3 SA 523 (T)] in which the facts were materially the same, it was held that the person committing the act will only be guilty if he has reason to believe that the vehicle approaching him is exceeding the speed limit, or that the driver of this vehicle has the intention of exceeding the speed limit. In as far as these two decisions are irreconcilable it is submitted that the latter should be followed. This type of conduct is in effect nothing more than a warning to others to obey the law

So what’s the truth – can you actually be fined for flashing an oncoming motorist to warn about a roadblock or speed trap?

Howard Dembovsky, the National Chairman of the Justice Project South Africa, says, “Flashing your lights at oncoming motorists to warn them of a speed trap ahead is not specifically illegal. Those law enforcement authorities [using “defeating the ends of justice” as justification] have found themselves getting sued for unlawful arrest.”

    3. Never leave space between your car and the car in front of you

According to a social media post that went viral a couple of years ago, the rule around leaving a safe space in South Africa is:

“Under no circumstance should you leave a safe distance between you and the car in front of you, this space will be filled by at least 2 taxis and a BMW, putting you in an even more dangerous situation.”

While we encourage motorists to drive safely and follow the rules of the road, it’s always possible that the gap will be filled by drivers you never intended to let cut in front of you. That’s just life in South Africa!

    4. Call traffic lights ‘robots’

Legend has it that before we had traffic lights in South Africa, the police used to control traffic intersections with their hands (as they still do when traffic lights aren’t working).

When the police were replaced by traffic lights, it created the impression that a human job was replaced by machines – hence the name ‘robot’!

Do you know a different story about why we call traffic lights ‘robots’? Let us know on our Facebook page!

    5. Keep coins in our car

Did you know that car guards are unique to Southern Africa, which includes South Africa, Egypt, Mozambique, and Namibia?

According to the research paper The Car Guards of Cape Town: A Public Good Analysis, high unemployment in South Africa means that the informal market absorbs the excess supply of labour and, as of 2012, almost 16% of the informal sector was employed as car guards. With the unemployment rate in South Africa increasing over the years, it’s likely that in 2021 even more of the informal labour sector is made up of car guards.

A study done by Business Insider in 2019 showed that most drivers tip car guards anywhere between R2 and R10, which means that South African drivers tend to keep smaller coins and notes in their cars for easy access to tip car guards.

But what will happen to car guards now that the country is increasingly moving towards digital payments?

A new system called TiPPED allows drivers to tip their car guards – at no additional fee – either through a QR code or even your online banking app. Pretty innovative, huh?

  • 5 MENTAL HACKS TO HELP YOU ACE YOUR NEXT INTERVIEW

5 MENTAL HACKS TO HELP YOU ACE YOUR NEXT INTERVIEW

It’s time for change. Or an upgrade. Whichever way you approach your career, it’s going to involve interviews — a lot of them!

At the moment, those will probably be screen-to-screen video chats. By “chats” we mean an uncomfortably deep psychological survey of your education, skills, personality, career, and future. In a short space of time. By someone who has countless more candidates to get through.

Stressed? Don’t be! Beyond power dressing and knowing your work history, skills, and achievements, (and the prospective company’s as well!) there are a host of tricks that can help you climb the ladder.

We’ve put together a cheat sheet to help you win at your next job interview.

Clever mental tricks for your next interview

    1. Give them what they want

First, what are they looking for?

Every recruiter or potential boss will be asking themselves some questions throughout the interview. It’s your job to answer them along the way, even if they don’t ask. Classy Career Girl lists them:

    • Why do you want to work with us?
    • Can you do the job?
    • Will you fit the company culture?
    • How do you outshine other candidates?

    2. Mirror your interviewer

Mimic their words and motions but remember that mirroring doesn’t mean parroting. As Classy Career Girl advises, “It’s a subtle reflection. If you’re too much of a chameleon, copying every nuance, you’ll alienate the recruiter.”

    3. Show what you know

If you’ve done your homework, you’ll be up to date on the company’s recent news, and if you know how to use social media, you’ll have identified and reached out to existing and former employees to get the low-down on company culture, vision, and more. Bring this in-depth knowledge into your interview to show how passionate you are about being part of their professional family.

    4. Match answers to your interviewer’s age and role

A 33-year-old Millennial department manager is going to be interested in different qualities and skills than a Baby Boomer. That’s because they have different mandates when it comes to hiring and different cultural languages depending on their generation.

Give some thought to their role and responsibility as well as yours. How might you best serve the company, its business goals and the person interviewing you? Point this out clearly in a language they understand.

The Ladders breaks each generation down and suggests suitable focuses for each:

    • Millennials (25 to 40 years old): Show your work through visuals (physical portfolio or a SlideShare presentation) and emphasise your multitasking skills.
    • Generation X (40 to 50 years old): Illustrate your creativity and how you balance personal and professional life to be more successful at both.
    • Baby Boomer (50 to 70 years old): Show that you work hard and demonstrate respect for what they’ve achieved.

Don’t forget Generation Z – professionals in their early twenties. It’s entirely possible to have a manager younger than you if you’re interviewing in certain sectors, such as start-ups or technology. If you’re interviewing with a Gen Z’er, make sure to show visuals, videos if possible, and keep it short and to the point.

    5. Practise beforehand

This is especially useful for Zoom interviews, where many of the visual, audio, and psychological cues we’re used to picking up on in person  may be missing. Here are some top tips:

    • Get a friend or family member to ask you typical and trick interview questions. Try different approaches to answers each time.
    • Make eye contact with your interviewer. On video calls, train yourself to look directly into the camera lens.
    • It’s good practise to check if your hair and outfit look okay throughout, much like you’d check your blind spots regularly and quickly while driving.
    • Make sure you look relaxed but focused.
    • Avoid a fake video background. You could drape a sheet (securely) for a clear temporary background. It won’t hurt to pick a neutral colour that suits your skin tone.

What to do when it doesn’t work out

You can do everything right and still not get the job. Maybe another candidate beat you out by a hair, or the company decided to rethink the skills and experience needed for the job. If you’ve invested your time heavily in multiple time-consuming interviews or skills assessment tests the bad news can feel even worse.

Here’s how to pick yourself up again when it doesn’t work out.

    • DO send a polite email thanking the interviewer for their time, even if you feel hard done by. A little professional courtesy goes a long way.
    • DON’T badger or beg. If you hit it off with the interviewer, you may (politely!) ask if there was anything you could have done differently or areas you can improve on, but don’t keep contacting them if you don’t get a response.
    • DO ask to be kept on file. If you just missed out on the job by not having, for example, an important qualification or skill set, there’s no harm in asking to be considered for the next appropriate role.
    • DON’T let it get you down. Job hunting is more difficult than ever, and in these times companies may be scared to commit to a candidate. Remember, there are factors out of your control that affect their hiring decision, so try not to take it personally.
    • DO take a break if you need it. Job hunting can be mentally exhausting; rejection even more so. If you find yourself getting worn down by the search, don’t feel guilty for taking a break for a few days or weeks.

Feeling prepared and ready? Great. Now go get that job!

  • HOW TO ACCESS 100,000+ FREE BOOKS LEGALLY ONLINE (AND NOT GET INTO TROUBLE)

HOW TO ACCESS 100,000+ FREE BOOKS LEGALLY ONLINE (AND NOT GET INTO TROUBLE)

It might be available, but a lot of the content you consume online isn’t free, or even legal.

We’re not just talking about getting one month free of Netflix with each new email signup (they’ve figured that one out) or memes of your best friend’s hair on the finsta  account y’all made her for her birthday, which she actually loves. We’re talking stuff you download on the internet that is of dubious origin and uncertain ownership. Or – AHEM – the stuff you upload

Anyone who’s had their hilarious home-video edits of famous footage “disappeared” from YouTube might relate  (even if it’s not necessarily justified). There are rules around content and ownership online, whether it started there or not, whether it’s moving images or static text. Much of the English-language content is created in America, and platforms based there have guides about it, like this one from YouTube:

Even if it’s only your conscience that’s costing you and you don’t get caught, the growth of Artificial Intelligence means there are more and more eyes on you online , so there’s every reason to stay within the confines of law.

But free stuff is always in fashion. So how about 100,000 books that weren’t (technically) free before? A retro fix might be all you need to address your screen time restlessness.

The New York Public Library recently found that “80 percent of books published between 1924 and 1963 are (or should be) in the public domain”. This means they belong to the public as a whole and are not copyrighted. In its foresight and filial spirit, the Library scanned many of these of books and put them on the World Wide Web.

If you know the title or author of a book that was published in America between these years, you can look for it on the Hathi Trust and it might be there (they aren’t all uploaded). If you don’t feel like searching for a specific title, let this bot suggest a new one to you every few hours.

Thank you, NY Public Library. We’ve definitely got time for that.

  • TWO-DAY GETAWAYS – ABOVE THE MADDENING CROWD

TWO-DAY GETAWAYS – ABOVE THE MADDENING CROWD

Keen on festivals but like to hide away at home, too? Popular events mean lots of lovely people, and while you may enjoy the masses on a mission, you might want to stay somewhere quiet and calm when the show’s over. These two-day getaways in or near towns with big festivals might be perfect for revelling and relaxing.

National Arts Festival, Grahamstown, Western Cape – 27 June to 7 July 2019

Heralded as “South Africa’s biggest and boldest celebration of the arts,” this is one winter stay you’ll want warm clothes for. If you’re into theatre, fine art, fringe events and wandering the streets of a small town, this one’s for you.

    https://www.nationalartsfestival.co.za/

    Stay at: The Robin’s Nest

Why: As the name suggests, this stylish, cosy spot is a hideaway you’ll be happy to return to after shows, beers and laughs. You can walk to Kingswood College from it, and it’s only 1.6km drive to town. 15 minutes if you walk.

A guest suggests that “if you’re looking for a clean, stylish, yet comfy place to stay, this is the place for you. White percale linen, chocolates on our pillows, coffee, tea, milk, a bottle of water and a bowl of fruit were all things that made our stay comfortable. My favourite was the setting though… our room overlooked gorgeous fruit trees. We just loved that! “

    -Karen

Whale watching, Hermanus, Western Cape – June to November

Dubbed one of the world’s top 12 whale watching spots, Hermanus is the mating and breeding grounds of the Southern Right Whale during the winter and spring months. October is the most crowded time (on land and in the ocean) but you can visit most of the year. “The Southern Right Whales migrate from the Antarctic around June to calve and mate,” advises the Hermanus website, and “calving takes place in August and September and the males arrive for mating in October when the whale population peaks.”[1]

    http://www.hermanus.co.za/whale-watching

    Stay at: Harbour View, Gansbaai

Why: Quaint and affordable, it’s close to town but not in the heart of whale-watching central! All recent guests gave check-in 5 stars.

One guest gushed that, “Accommodation was spacious, private and comfortable. Safe secure parking puts your mind at ease. And the view. Just incredible! Very thoughtful, accommodating, and friendly hosts. I would stay there again in a heartbeat.“

    -Wian

    Hilton Arts Fest, KwaZulu-Natal – 13 to 15 September 2019

This is the “largest theatrical event of its kind” in KwaZulu-Natal. It’s been running for 26 years. If you love the idea of lectures, workshops, talks, theatre shows, crafts and fine art, you’ll be in the right place.

    https://www.hiltonfestival.co.za/

Stay: at The Gate House of River Goose Cottages

Why: Angela is a superhost (gets top reviews consistently), and this secret spot in Hilton is nestled in a gorgeous 2-hectare garden. A great central base in the midlands and a piece of paradise when you’re happily worn out by the festival.

A guest called it, “a lovely place to refresh and recharge. Loved the country feel and the garden. The Gatehouse was clean and spacious, we really enjoyed our stay. We will definitely go back.“

    -Di

Ficksburg Cherry Fest, Free State – 21 to 23 November 2019

Farm tours, baking comps, traditional cherry liquor, golf events, cycling routes, circus shows and LOTS of cherries for your belly… sound like your idea of a good time? This is the oldest crop fest in the country in the ‘Cherry Town’ of Ficksburg.

    http://cherryfestival.co.za/

Stay at: Tempelhof Guest and Game Farm, Log Cabin

Why: It’s 12km from Ficksburg, with a majestic view of the magical Maluti mountains.

One guest said, it’s “a little paradise in the middle of the Eastern Free State, with the most amazing view, surrounded by wild animals, entertained and watched over by Lassie (a loving Border Collie), greeted by the most loveliest of hosts.”

  • 10 CAMPING HACKS THAT WON’T FAIL

10 CAMPING HACKS THAT WON’T FAIL

Camping is supposed to be a fun activity. It shouldn’t feel like you’ve been thrown out of your comfortable bed into an inflatable nightmare. You and nature should unite and be a tranquil force capable of handling the obstacles your tent tosses at you.

Struggling to stay calm during camping? Don’t tie your sleeping bags in a knot-We’ve got your back with these 10 camping hacks:

    1. Tea isn’t just for drinking…

You can light your bonfire with teabags!

Every time you sip a cup of tea, throw the used teabags in a bowl and allow them to dry. Once you’ve collected your teabags, soak them in paraffin or saturate them with melted candle wax. Once they have absorbed the paraffin, or the wax has cooled down, seal them in a container and you’re ready for a legendary campfire.

Not a tea drinker? No problem! You can also turn a normal packet of Doritos into dancing flames. No skill needed here. Just gooi it on.

    2. Bugger off Bloodsuckers!

Tired of mosquitos bugging around with your tranquillity? Don’t worry we’ve got something they won’t buzz about.

Simply add bundles of sage to your campfire to keep the mosquitos away from your red liquids. The strong fragrance of sage repels the noisy flyers.

    3. Don’t be silly, wrap that… meat!

One beer too many can turn your meat into charcoal. Which will force you to go vegetarian for the night. Wrap your beef/chicken or pork in cabbage to stop it from burning. The moistness of the cabbage creates the perfect barrier against the radiant coals.

    4. Make breakfast with your bonnet-WTFudge

If you’ve run out of matches or would like an environmentally friendly morning. Make sure the weather is hot and your car’s bonnet has been in the sun for at least 2 hours. Clean the bonnet well, crack an egg on it and fry.

Please Note: This attempt might fail due to bad weather conditions or impatience.

    5. Keep your tent room temperature

Tired of waking up in a sauna? Use an emergency blanket to cover your tent. The blanket’s silver coating will reflect the sunlight and keep your tent protected from its blazing rays. You’ll get more sleep and feel less cranky when you wake up to nature’s face.

    6. Don’t get carried away by ants!

Ants can be a real pain in the bottom. Even if you eat at a table, they can quickly crawl up the table legs and become a pest.

A good way of combating this is to put a small tray of water under each table leg. The ants won’t be able to navigate the water and will leave you to worry about the bees instead.

    7. You don’t have to skip the morning brew

Coffee is the fuel to our mornings. We can’t start our early hikes without it’s comforting aroma.

Make a cup of caffeine while camping by placing a scoop into a coffee filter and tie it up with dental floss. When you want to make coffee – use like you would a tea bag. For best results boil over the fire/gas cooker for a while.

     8. Sleep like a log

If snuggling up to a bottle of hot water goes against your better judgment, try some dry clothes instead. They will soak up any moisture in the bottom of your sleeping bag and keep your freezing feet warm.

    9. A little lube goes a long way

Keep your zippers zippy by applying a little bit of candle wax from a very un-lit candle.

    • Natural selfies are the BEST!

Want to experience life from a stick’s perspective? Attach your GoPro to a stick! It’s free and super convenient.

    Happy camping!

  • 7 SOOTHING HOME REMEDIES FOR SUNBURN RELIEF

7 SOOTHING HOME REMEDIES FOR SUNBURN RELIEF

You’ve tried to shy away from the sun, but life got in the way and the waves were calling. You didn’t think you’d have 50 shades of pink after your refreshing 2-hour dip in the world’s largest aqua pit, because a few squirts of factor 30 should have blocked the burn. Unfortunately, your skin’s melanin and the sunblock couldn’t shield you from the sun’s blazing ultraviolet rays.

After a look in the mirror at home, a few sympathetic stares from strangers and a burning sensation, you realize it’s time for some damage control. You google “Home remedies for sunburn” and come across the following awesome tips:

    7 Home remedies for sunburn

    1. Ice-ice baby

How do you take the sting out of a sunburn? You stop, cooperate and listen!

Cool it down with a classic cold compress. All you need is a few ice blocks, a plastic bag and a hand towel. It will remove the burns and reduce inflammation. Simply chunk the ice in the bag and wrap the towel around. Press the pack on your fried body parts and feel the burn fade away.

       2. Aloe Vera

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using aloe vera to help reduce the effects of sunburn. You can simply cut an aloe vera leaf open and squeeze out the juices or make some aloe ice cubes.

Make aloe vera ice cubes for pain relief. Keep them in your freezer or take them with you to the beach in a cooler bag. Your sunburn will melt away as the ice cubes and natural treatment ease the burn. Re-apply frequently (like you should have done with your sun block – then you wouldn’t be in this mess right now).

Tip: Buy aloe vera water and freeze in an ice cube tray. It’s easy and super cool.

          3. Freezing soak

Taking a steamy hot shower is a no-go after getting a burn, but a cool bath can do wonders for sunburn relief.

When you’ve got 15 minutes or so, fill a bath with cool water and jump in. Add a cup of baking powder to your bath water for some extra soothing power. Baking soda can help your sunburned skin and return its pH levels by balancing acid and alkaline levels. Hmm…maybe it’s worth keeping some healing powder in your toiletry bag.

           4. Black magic

Studies show that black tea may have anti-inflammatory properties, and its ability to reduce inflammation could prove to be a source of relief for sunburnt skin.

You’ll need a bathtub, pitcher, water, facecloth, and three bags of black tea. Fill the pitcher with warm water and soak the tea bags in it until the water is almost pitch black. Don’t worry this magic potion isn’t supernatural or evil.

After stripping down to your birthday suit, soak a facecloth in the water and apply to the heated areas.

          5. Apple healing

An apple a day keeps the sunburn away! Or in this case a cup of apple cider vinegar…eeuw. It’s nasty but it will speed up the healing process. It maintains the skin’s pH levels which can help reduce peeling and blisters. Apple cider vinegar is a natural antiseptic that helps the infected skin tissue to recover.

Forget about the bad smell and apply some to your sun roasted skin. You’re going to smell like a walking “slap chip” but it will reduce your pain!

           6. Yogurt squeezes

Yogurt’s yummy and you’d hate to waste a drop. Fear not, you won’t be wasting if you apply some of the dairy delight to your burns. Just grab a container of any flavour from your fridge and feel the sweet relief from the heat as you gently dab the cool diary to the affected areas.

           7. Witch Hazel spells

Witch hazel isn’t a potion made by witches who live in the woods. It’s basically just some liquid extracted from the hazel plant.

The extract contains essential oils and tannins that have been reported to reduce inflammation, draw skin tissue together for improved healing and fight free radicals. Once applied to burned skin, you’ll feel relieve from stings and itching.

You can buy witch hazel at Dischem or pharmacies in your local area.

The long working hours has an impact on your mental, physical and relationship health.

    The Research

In the United States, Americans are working an average of 47 hours a week. 40% of Americans work more than 50 hours a week. Even though some leave the office after they’ve survived their 8-hour working day, they’ve got mobile devices which constantly connects them to their bread and butter.

When phones buzz with a new mail, it’s hard to resist checking that inbox and not replying on the go. According to the Harvard Business Review people often feel the need to respond to work related communications after hours due to ambition, pride and proving that they’re valuable to their companies. Does it really add value to the company or is it slowly killing productivity and passion?

Well, research confirms that long working hours is the reason why you’re constantly sipping on coffee to stay awake. Work is your Jockey and you allow it to race you into complete exhaustion. Stop your workhorse behaviour right in its tracks! That’s what companies in Sweden, like Toyota, is doing. They are reducing working hours and making sure that their employees remain focussed.

The 4-day work trail by Perpetual Guardian

A company in New Zealand, Perpetual Guardian, created a trail where employees worked 4 days a week and got paid for 5. It sounds ridiculous, but the results payed off. Over 8 weeks in March and April the employees worked for 4 full days and chilled for the remainder of the week.

Independent surveys gathered from researchers at the University of Auckland and the Auckland University of Technology indicated staff stress levels during the trial dropped from 45 percent to 38 percent, while work-life balance improved from 54 percent to 78 percent.

“What we’ve seen is a massive increase in engagement and staff satisfaction about the work they do, a massive increase in staff intention to continue to work with the company and we’ve seen no drop in productivity,” – says company founder Andrew Barnes.

Perpetual Guardian will make this 4-day structure a permanent thing, due to the positive effects of the trail.

3 Health risk of working waaay too much

    1. Heart attack

The risk of heart disease increases by 67% for people who work long hours compared to people who work the standard 7-8 hours a day, according to a report by The University College London.

    2.  Risk of obesity

Lead researcher Nicole Au, who led a work time study at Monash University in Australia, said, “Extended work hours may reduce the time spent preparing home-cooked meals, exercising and sleeping, which are risk factors for obesity.”

    3.  Increased fatigue

Fatigue sets in when you work extended hours over a long period of time. Symptoms of fatigue from extended workdays include sleepiness, weariness, poor concentration, irritability and increased vulnerability to illness. These symptoms influence productivity and can cause mental breakdowns. We’re not robots, dammit!

Stop what you’re doing right now! Jump off the labour treadmill and talk to your boss about a 4-day work trail. Take time out of your busy schedule for recreational purposes. Remember all work and no play makes Jack a dull workhorse.

  • 10 BLACK FRIDAY STRATEGIES THAT WON’T FAIL

10 BLACK FRIDAY STRATEGIES THAT WON’T FAIL

Friday, 23 November, is on like a 75% OFF SALE sign. It’s almost time to purchase that fancy rose gold watch you’ve been eyeing for months now. Don’t get too excited just yet though, all legendary shoppers strategize first. Planning ahead of the retail rush will get you in front of the line when it comes to getting the bargains you can boast about.

Here are 10 secret strategies for smart shoppers:

    1. Plot your plan

If you don’t plan, how would you know about Markham’s 50% sale and Sportscene’s Nike Blazer sneaker “giveaway”? Before clothes fly from hangers to wardrobes on Black Friday, you should know exactly where to shop and what to expect. Do your homework and decide which stores you would like to visit according to the best bargains.

Visit the following websites to guide you:

    1. Sign-up for emails

Once you’ve decided on which shops you’d like to buy from, sign-up for their email newsletters. It’s best to do this at least 2 weeks before Black Friday to avoid missing out on the best bargains. Plus, it takes time to get added to the email lists. Remember, the early buyer catches the bargain!

    1. Make a list and stick to it!

You don’t have to grab a notebook and pen for this. That’s sooo…2001! Use your mobile or tablet to make a list of the items you’d love to own. You can use apps like Todois or Evernote to compile your wish list. Keep the list relevant and updated. Make sure to add the amounts you are willing to pay for your Black Friday wants (and needs) to the lists. Make sure your phone stays charged during the consumerism chaos.

Remember, not every item you want will be on sale, so you need to take a moment to see if you can find it lower elsewhere.

    1. Scout for prices at stores

Don’t wait around for Black Friday to knock on your bank account. Take a trip to the mall and add the prices of your goodies to your list. Visit at least 2 different stores for every item to compare prices. If you don’t have the time for that, visit PriceCheck online to compare prices of various products. You might find that your Nike Airs are cheaper at an online store than at that fancy sport shop in your local mall.

    1. Use Apps to your advantage

You’ve got secret shopping tools in your pocket. Use them to maximize your Black Friday Bash!

The following apps are awesome for shopping:

    • Bidorbuy
    • Zando
    • Takealot.com- SA’s #1 Online Mobile Shopping App
    • The food app
    • Banggood
    • Superbalist Fashion
    • Shopkick
    • Wantitall

All of the above apps will guide you to the best sale prices. You will be able to browse for products and compare prices thanks to these nifty tools.

    1. Timing is everything!

Late shoppers won’t find the perfect buy! If something is cheap, it won’t wait around for your purchase. If you don’t take it for that trip to the till in time, someone else will. The best time to shop online for Black Friday is just after midnight on Thursday 22 November. As for physical stores, you shouldn’t go too early. Move away from the average thinking behaviour. The best time to visit a store on Black Friday is after 9 in the morning. Make sure that you know what you want and use time to your advantage.

    1. Shop from your comfy couch

Stay in your pjs, grab a steamy cup of caffeine and shop from the comforts of your living room. You don’t need to sit in heavy traffic, walk marathons in the mall and stand in endless ques. Set-up your laptop and create bookmarks to the websites you would like to visit for a convenient shopping experience. Make sure that your internet’s connectivity is good and keep your laptop plugged in. Don’t open too many tabs at once though, that might cause confusion and crashes.

Find out which online store to visit here: Our Top 10 online shops for Black Friday

    1. Fuel your body and brain

If you think back to school, your teachers always told you to get plenty of sleep and to eat a hearty breakfast before a big test. While shopping for Black Friday isn’t a maths test, the same rules apply. If you don’t sleep at least 7-hours you won’t be able to think straight and to make logical decisions about what you need to purchase. You also risk the chance of running low on energy when you need your strength the most. Carrying bags can running around can drain you!

In addition, with enough shut-eye, you need to keep your body fuelled with a healthy breakfast and snacks. Eating balanced meals before the rush will give you the power you need to perform at your best.

    1. Get those finances on fleek

If you decide to visit stores instead of shopping online, draw the amount of money that you’re willing to spend and keep it in your wallet. Just be careful not to walk around with stacks of cash. If you plan on spending 5K, rather keep it safely in your bank account.

Make sure your finances are in order and that your daily spent limit isn’t too low.  Also make sure that you know how much money you have available in your account. A declining card is super embarrassing!

If your finances aren’t in order, you might miss out on all the specials. Since time is of the essence, make sure that your debit and credit card is fully functional. Call your bank or check online to see if your accounts are ready to support your wild shopping spree.

    1. Get that mindset right

Your mind is extremely powerful. If you think that Black Friday won’t bring you any good bargains and you don’t put in some effort, your thoughts will turn into reality. Share the experience with your best friends and just enjoy the day. It’s not a competition, no one’s winning anything (except extra earthly things).

At the end of the day, you should look at the bright side of Black Friday and ignore all negatives that sometimes get thrown around in the media. Data shows that in 2014, the average Black Friday discount came out to 40% off! That should feed your shopping appetite.

  • ECONOMIST BELIEVES SA ISN’T IN A RECESSION- WTF?

ECONOMIST BELIEVES SA ISN’T IN A RECESSION- WTF?

“South Africa is not in a recession, despite the latest gross domestic product (GDP) figures released by Statistics SA”, says economist Roelof Botha. Sounds ridiculous, right? We all know about the recession and its nasty side-effects. We experience the unemployment pains, corruption scars and political bleeds daily.

In fact, SA is in a technical recession which is defined as two successive quarters of negative GDP     growth. A recession can also be defined as “an economy performing below potential”. But according to Botha there is more than one way to define a recession. “The OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development) says one should compare GDP on a year-on-year (y/y) basis rather than on a quarterly basis. If you compare the second quarter of 2018 to the second quarter of 2017 one can see SA is not in a recession. That is a fact,” said Botha.

Forget the recession definitions. The shocking economic stats can’t be ignored. Unemployment in Mzansi has increased from 0,5% to 27,2% in the second quarter of 2018 and the quality of life has diminished. Traffic robots are buzzing with beggars and the country’s finances have been mismanaged by some authorities with poor judgment and questionable morals.

    4 Reasons for the recession

Okay, we know that money is tight for the country and its dwellers. The Dollar throws its punches and the Rand tumbles to the ground. But what (or who) else is to blame for the economic downfall?

    1. Minister Merry-Go-Round:

South Africa has gone through five finance ministers in less than 10 years. Before President Jacob Zuma came to power, it took 25 years to go through the same number of treasurers. In December 2015, the country had three occupants in the post. Absurd!

Switching ministers is never a great idea. After the dismissal of Pravin Gordhan, SA’s credit rating jumped to junk status, which compromises international markets.

    1. Corruption Chaos

Yeah, this one is a serious pain in the butt. How can a country’s economy flourish when an authority faces charges of corruption, fraud and money laundering? Let’s not go into too much detail here. We’d just like to know where they stack our tax money…

    1. Land expropriation

The sensitive subject of land redistribution is still causing a bit of disorder with the rand, and it is currently stifling South Africa’s business landscape. Foreigners are no longer investing in land and property in SA, since they fear monetary loss.

The proposed expropriation without compensation will have a terrible effect on the South African economy. According to NEWS 24 South Africa might experience Zimbabwe-like economic conditions, see a massive flight of foreign capital due to the weak protection of private property, and see subsistence farming crop up where commercial farms with access to capital had once provided food security and export markets.

    1. Agriculture “poorformance”

Agriculture is in ‘n sticky situation. “Right now, we are facing what people are saying is a technical recession and it’s largely due to the performance of agriculture. Agriculture did not perform as highly as we thought, and some people are saying it’s because of the late rains and late harvest and it’s bound to correct itself in the next quarter,” says Ramaphosa.

    Is there hope for Mzansi?

“All is not lost”- says President Cyril Ramaphosa.

“I am saying we should not be fearful and think that we are in a recession, we are not, and this is going to be corrected. I have no doubt about it and secondly, and we should not forget that we have faced such a situation before, economies go through cyclical processes and economies grow and go down all the time”, added Ramaphosa.

  • ARE YOU ADDICTED TO TECHNOLOGY?

    ARE YOU ADDICTED TO TECHNOLOGY?

How many times a day do you check your phone? According to NYU professor Adam Alter, the average young adult picks up their smartphone 150 times a day. In total that’s over 28 hours a week, 56 days a year and 10 years of your life.

You probably don’t personally keep track of your intimate encounters with Mr Apple or Ms Samsung, but you should. Too much chill time with your mobile, can be bad for your health.

Tech is our modern mandrax with a few similar side effects like weight loss and sleep difficulty.

Possible side effects of Technology Addiction include:

Believe it or not, there are real, physical manifestations of having a tech-diction. These include:

    • Carpal tunnel syndrome
    • Headaches
    • Neck or backaches
    • Dry, red eyes
    • Depression, bipolar and anxiety
    • Lead to other addictions like drugs, alcohol, smoking and/or sex. Studies have shown that using technology can bring about the same chemical reaction in the brain as is found in those with these types of addictions.

The main cause of the above side effects is the internet. We surf the web like zombies in search of a brain feast. Some internet dwellers even develop an illness called Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD).

    What’s IAD?

Internet Addiction Disorder is a real disease that effects your brain function. It’s similar to suffering from a chemical dependency, such as drugs and alcohol. The disorder makes paying attention and remembering details difficult. A person with IAD struggles to keep a conversation offline flowing and feels depro without their legal online high.

    The treatment

Internet Addiction Disorder is treatable. *Phew*.  Although some believe it’s just a “fad illness” that can go away by itself, other professionals argue that medications are effective in the treatment of Internet Addiction Disorder – because if you are suffering from this condition, it is likely that you are also suffering from anxiety and depression.

Studies have shown that anti-anxiety and anti-depression medications can decrease online activity from 35+ hours a week to 16 hours a week. Other psychotherapies like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and light shock therapy can also treat the disorder.

    The verdict

Technology and drugs have a few things in common –  Both can give you a high with unhealthy consequences. Sure the 1000 Friends on Facebook gives you a confidence boost and levelling-up on Dota makes your inner geek want to jump out of its shell, but what’s next? After every high comes a low. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the luxury of technology, it just means that you should try to take a break from the blue screen every hour or three.  Track your on-screen activity here: Moments

  • DYK: GROUNDING YOUR KIDS IS BAD FOR THEIR HEALTH!

DYK: GROUNDING YOUR KIDS IS BAD FOR THEIR HEALTH!

Coping with little rascals can be challenging. Sometimes it feels like their ears aren’t very functional and they babble non-stop, especially after one too many sips of sugary soda…Ugh, sometimes keeping the youngsters in their rooms with mountains of toys feels like the only solution to the endless bundles of energy. Is grounding however the healthiest solution to discipline a toddler? Not according to some experts, it turns out.

Keeping your kiddos indoors might seem like a safe and harmless act of good parenting, but it can be harmful to their health.

    Did you know?

Children are very vulnerable to the impact of poor indoor climate and toxins, because their lungs and brains are not fully developed yet. Researchers from the University of Leicester studied 100 healthy people, whose age ranged from 7 to 21, using a range of breathing tests. Children can hold approximately one litre of air in the lungs compared to four litres in an adult.

Kids’ rooms are one of the worst places in your home when it comes to air pollution and toxins. Many toys and electronic appliances are to blame for harmful emissions. A recent Danish survey found that around half of the study’s participating families had higher than recommended night-time amounts of CO2 in kids’ rooms, and that around every fourth room had three times the recommended maximum CO2 levels.

    Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning

    • Headaches
    • Troubled sleep
    • Fatigue and difficulty concentrating
    • Chest pain
    • Seizures
    • Blurry vision
    • Nausea

If your children experience any of the above symptoms, please visit your local Paediatrician for immediate medical attention.

    Solutions to healthier indoor climates

Here are some effortless ways to reduce CO2 levels and improve the indoor climate in your kids’ rooms.

    1. Less air isn’t more

Open more than one window to make sure that natural air fills your kid’s lungs. Indoor air isn’t great for their health. It contains gasses, particles, biological waste and water vapour. Gross, right?

Hint: Air your rascal’s room out for at least 40 minutes every day. Keep their bedroom door open.

       2. Plastic isn’t that fantastic

When plastic heats up, it releases toxic fumes. These fumes are especially found in toys older than 10 years. Keep your childhood action figure tucked away in a box far away from your little angel’s grip.

Hint: Don’t leave plastic toys in the sunlight or on heated floors. Make sure that your toddler doesn’t spend too much time exploring their rooms. Rather let them follow you into the living room. A little game of Simon says won’t hurt.

        3. Less damp, no mites

Don’t leave any wet towels or clothes in your children’s rooms. That’s an opportunity for nasty mould to cultivate in your ceiling. Also remember to clean sheets and matrasses regularly. Mites love beds even more than we do.

Hint: Vacuum mattresses at least once a week. Keep the room dust free and dry.

Keep the above in mind the next time you see your kiddo spending too much time in their toy kingdom. Don’t punish your toddlers by forcing them to stay indoors. Enjoy the fresh air and make sure that your kids spend enough time in the great outdoors.

  • TECH LENDS A HAND WITH NEW LIMBS FOR KIDS AND ANIMALS

TECH LENDS A HAND WITH NEW LIMBS FOR KIDS AND ANIMALS

Every day, little ones are born without limbs, or lose them to accidents or abuse. Prosthetics are human-made arms, legs, fingers and thumbs that do the work that nature can’t.

Thing is, prosthetics are also extremely expensive, and every design case is unique, whether it’s for a puppy or a baby. Enter 3D printing, which can tailor each and every design at super-low cost. That’s important for super-individuals in need of palms or paws.

Humans can struggle to adjust to a limb-less life and the social stigma can be hard to live with. Animals missing vital body parts often come to a premature end in the wild, and pets tend to be put down if vets and guardians can’t put their finger on a suitable solution soon enough. Enter modern technology…

    Handy 3D-printed prosthetics for kids

How do you say no to a child who needs a hand? You don’t, if you’re Stephen Davis and Drew Murraybeen. They’ve been voluntarily supplying kids around the world with free 3D-printed prosthetic limbs for a while now.

If they started out of a backyard shed, you can too. “All our work is shared as open source for the benefit of all,” say Stephen and Drew, “for non-commercial use”. Thumbs up, Team unLIMBited.

E-nABLE is another community project putting their best design foot forward for kids. E-nABLE keeps it simple – no motors, no sensors, no heavy batteries.

This collaborative project was inspired by Jon Schull, a research scientist at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York, USA.

He came across a YouTube story of a South African carpenter named Richard who had lost the fingers of one hand in an accident and approached a puppet-maker, Ivan, to design a replacement.

People were offering the use of their 3D printers in YouTube comments, and Jon began to coordinate these offers. “Then something beautiful started happening,” E-nABLE says, “designers started joining and doing exactly what Ivan had hoped they would – they started innovating, collaborating and re-sharing the improved design files back out into the universe!”

Youth groups, schools, maker spaces and laboratories are joining the movement.

Tech to the rescue – 3D-printed limbs for animals

Working together, humans are helping animals lead full and active lives no matter what situation they came from or how many of their limbs or other exterior body parts work.

A sanctuary in New York county, USA, takes in animals in need. Some of these rescues need more support than others and they get it, thanks to co-founder Jenny Brown, herself an amputee, and certified prosthetist, Erik Tompkins. Then there’s a Brazilian goose called Vitória who needed a new beak. Her injury left her completely dependent on humans for her daily sustenance. It took two tries for Miamoto, custom prosthetics manufacturer for wild animals and domestic pets, to design her the perfect pair of 3D-printed goose “lips”. What is really her jaw, not her lips, is made from a biodegradable polymer with corn and sugarcane. Take a gander!

No 3D-printer? No problem. Here are HANDMADE limbs for pets and rescues

With a little training and a lot of love, a professional prosthetist in applied his human-oriented training to animals.

Derrick Campanna sends casting kits to vets and animal lovers with pet amputees all over the world. They cast the limbs, send the cast back and soon the Animal Ortho Care team crafts a bespoke solution with a brace and limb.

“If a dog gets his leg amputated,” Derrick tells PetMD, “a lot of times [his] other joints will degenerate very quickly,” he says. “But when we put a prosthetic on, you can redistribute the weight back onto the amputated side and essentially give the dog a couple of added years of high-quality life.” He’s helped everything from a llama to a 5-tonne elephant bull in Botswana.

PRE-S: Prep your pooch like a pro – less is not always more

Remember, if it’s an option, pre-operative preparation is everything. The problem, says Dr Megan Kelly, a vet and educator based in Cape Town, is that clients make contact when the vet has already amputated, by which time it’s often too late for a good fitting. “Vets are taught to amputate as high as possible and when we attach the prosthetic, we need some bone to attach it to,” the doctor told IOL

  • 7 EASY PHONE CHARGER HACKS FOR A QUICKER CHARGE

7 EASY PHONE CHARGER HACKS FOR A QUICKER CHARGE

Charge your phone faster with these 7 simple hacks and latest tech. There are quite a few ways you can speed up charge time without buying a new phone.

Whether you own a brick or the latest (greatest?) handset from leading mobile brands, charging takes time. Or, it used to. But it doesn’t have to! There are quite a few ways you can speed up charge time without buying a new phone.

Easy hacks for a quicker phone charge

    1. Charge in aeroplane mode. This cuts out unnecessary energy without shutting your phone.
      NOTE: it also cuts calls.
    2. Kill all the apps you aren’t using. They may be set to run in the background, which chews power.
    3. Keep your phone cool/remove phone case. Lithium-ion batteries refill faster when they’re cool. The optimal temperature range is 5 to 45 C. “Obviously,” Make Use Of Advises, “the battery temperature is in part controlled by the ambient surrounding temperature and removing your case will help lower it.”
TIP: try a fan, not the fridge.
    4. Switch your mobile off if you can. Without apps and software running, you’ll clock a much quicker refill time.
    5. Use a charger that plugs into the wall. It’s far faster than a laptop/USB charge.
    6. Use original chargers. If they break, buy original again. It’s worth it.
    7. Replace the battery if it’s old or you suspect it has a manufacturing fault (often covered by the warranty/guarantee). Again, original parts mean optimal performance.

New tech to charge mobiles faster

Smart chords FTW! A few simple tweaks to your hardware accessories could see exponential improvements in the time it takes to juice up your phone. USB-C (Android) and Apple’s Lightning cable give you hours of charge in minutes.

The Verge is confident that we can soon expect an estimated optimal charge speed of 0 – 50 % full charge in fifteen minutes thanks to improvements in electronics. At least, from the next, newest models from top-performing mobile brands.

So, the future of fast charge is exploding, but your batteries must not.

Watt do you mean, my battery exploded!?

Power surges, faulty chargers and sub-standard, non-approved substitutes can mean sudden flashes of power that fry your poor phone’s brain. So, don’t use your friend’s cheapo charger, or plug in during an electric storm, use that smart chord if you’ve got a newer phone.

Not sure what kind of chord you’ve got or if you should invest?

Get into the geekery by gauging your charge cables’ speeds…with this app for Android or iOS (iPhone)

    DIY enthusiasts beware

If you’re going to tweak your technical kit, the magic formula is volts multiplied by amps gives you watts (volts x amps = watts). So, increase the volts and/or amps, and the phone charges faster. Increase them too much, and – ka-BAM! – the battery might melt.

    Winging it? WARNING!

Smart chargers are designed to control volts and amps intelligently. If you haven’t done a crash course in electronics, don’t hack any hardware. It could also affect your warranty/guarantee, or worse. #justsaying

    What next?

If none of these approaches make much difference to your phone’s charge speed, or the tech costs more than your older phone is now worth, or you did, in fact, fry your phone (because science), it might be time for that upgrade, after all …and household insurance? We got this.

  • 5 BEST TIPS FOR TINDER TO TRY TODAY!

5 BEST TIPS FOR TINDER TO TRY TODAY!

So, you’re on Tinder to find love or something a little more than friendship? Still, you often end up without a match, third-wheeling with couples or eating microwaved dinners for one. Hate to break it to you, but you need some TLC (Tinder Loving Care).

We have some brilliant tips to get those Tinder matches multiplying. No need to uninstall the dating app just yet.

After reading this, you’ll be the kings and queens of online dating.

The basics – how to Tinder

    • Download Tinder for Android or Apple
    • Open the dating app and register.
    • Add a great photo of yourself.
    • Tweak your settings – location, notifications, match range, etc.
    • Write a short and sweet bio about yourself. Add more photos.
    • Start looking at others’ profiles. Swipe right if you’re interested.
    • Wait for a match (when they swipe right on YOU) and start chatting…
    • Go on a coffee date in a safe, public place.
    • Viola! Love is blooming.

    Try these 5 Tinder Tips!

    1. Firstly, get a bio, bro!

A Tinder profile without a bio is like a book without ink. It’s useless and unappealing. You need to approach your Tinder bio like you do your profile picture. Always look your best and take time to get it right. Write about the things you’re passionate about and express your personality. It might not seem sincere on a screen, but you stand a chance of meeting your match.

    Tinder bio no-no’s

    • Always be respectful. Sure, they’re strangers, but it’s a small world…
    • Be yourself but represent yourself, too. You are looking for romance, after all.
    • Writing a long bio is a definite fail. Keep it short and sweet. Imagine it’s a tweet.
    • Don’t make spelling and grammar errors. It’ll make you seem less intelligent or attentive than you are.

       2.Flaunt your face

Your face is your trademark. Nobody wants to date Casper the friendly ghost. You need a picture of your face and at least two other shots to get someone to swipe right. Keep the photos friendly and cut back on the filters. Narcissistic nitwits expose themselves in other ways, too; not so nice when we haven’t even met. Keep things sassy but classy.

Please note: Blurry and poorly-cropped images will kill your Tinder performance. Keep them fresh and in focus. If you feel awkward in front of the camera, take a selfie with your pup or kit cat – it’ll feel more natural and make you smile for real. You might even score some Superlikes.

    Tinder Win

    1. Make the settings work for you

Okay, you’ve got the bio and pics right. What about your profile settings? Make sure the settings and notifications are on point, otherwise you’ll be wasting precious dating time.

To change your notifications, tap the profile icon at the top of the main screen, go to Settings and then to Notifications. To edit other settings, head into the Settings menu to choose your preferences. Select your gender, proximity to potential matches and partner’s preferred age range. You’ll need to allow the app to see your phone’s location.

From there you can pick which gender you’re after. You can even choose both if you feel like it.

Hint: If you want more setting options – download Tinder Gold for about R50 per month. You can control who sees you and undo swipes.

    1. Learn to speak the language of LOVE

Even if you’ve got an awesome bio on the chat app and your pics are good enough to feature on the cover of a magazine, if you suck at communicating, you might as well let the Tinder flame die.

Your chats need to spell LOVE.

    L – Legit

You need to seem legit. That’s why the over-filtered pics and scripted bios are a no-go. Your messages need to flow freely and you want to express your personality accurately.  Would you (really) say something like, “Yass, you’re giving me the feels, but soz I need to bounce”?

    O – Ongoing

Active users communicate daily. Conversations build trust. Try to think differently here. Opening with a winking face is out, and asking, “how are you?” is boring. If you want to open a chat with a question, rather go with something that’s buzzing on social media.

    V – Vigilant

Watch out for fakes. You might be chatting to a catfish. Facebook-stalk your matches if you must. Look at their friends, location and recent posts. Real people, real possibility of a great date. Having fewer than 50 friends on Facebook isn’t normal. #justsaying

    E – Entertaining

Use humour, GIFs and images when you exchange messages. Remember that there are hundreds of people on Tinder. You need to stand out from the hormonal mass.

    1. Your date awaits!

If you’ve mastered the art of the 4 points above, you’re on your way to a romantic dinner with a stranger. Although it’s not technically a blind date, it can be rather awkward since you’ve probably never met the person before. Relax, be yourself, and if all else fails, there’s always a new smile waiting for a right-swipe.

Your future husband/wife/life partner might be just a tap or two away. Go work your magic, Cupido!

  • SMOKING VS VAPING – TAKE A DEEP BREATH

SMOKING VS VAPING – TAKE A DEEP BREATH

Do you enjoy daily smokes in the courtyard with your fellow smoky Joes and Janes? Sure, you do; it’s a communal ritual that makes you feel good. One taste of nicotine and you’re wrapped in a cloud. You sometimes try to escape, but keep crawling back to the comforting call of tobacco. Is that what it is…an addiction that’s been around for millennia.

More recently, Native Americans used it for medicinal purposes and soldiers smoked it to cope with the psychological after-effects of the American Civil War. It only started mainstreaming in 1881, though, when James Bonsack invented the first cigarette-making machine. It produced 120 000 cigs a day. Wow, give that man a Marlboro Gold! OR not…

Did you know? (You probably did)

There are over 20 cancer-causing chemicals in a ciggie. Here is a list of its toxic ingredients:

    Toxic Cigarette Ingredients:

    • Nicotine – Stimulates the nervous system and increases blood pressure.
    • Lead – Attacks the brain and central nervous system. This can cause comas, seizures and eventually death.
    • Arsenic – Large amounts can lead to cancer, liver disease, coma, and death.
    • Ammonia – Can cause coughing, nose and throat irritation, and mouth cancer.
    • Benzene – Causes anaemia and leukaemia (blood cancer).
    • Carbon Monoxide – Also known as the “silent killer”. The toxin can cause anaemia and respiratory problems.
    • Nitrosamines – Can lead to cancer.

Okay, let’s stop right there. Enough dissing cigarettes for now.  Let’s get to the vapes (e-cigarettes). Studies found that there are fewer chemicals in a vape than in a normal cigarette. What’s up with that? Does it mean vaping isn’t bad for your body’s built-in airbags?

     Vape Ingredients:

    • Nicotine – The addictive chemical. When people say they’re addicted to smoking, they’re dependant on nicotine.
    • Propylene Glycol (vegetable oil) – also known as e-juice, it keeps the vape’s liquid moist and the cartridge well-lubricated. It’s not a serious health risk but can cause damage to the lungs when inhaled.
    • Vegetable Glycerol – A non-toxic colourless liquid with a naturally sweet taste. When used in vape juice, it enhances the flavours and greatly improves vapour production!
    • Acetaldehyde – a colourless, flammable, non-toxic liquid used in the manufacture of acetic acid, perfumes, and flavours.
    • Nitrosamines – carcinogenic agents also found in cigarettes and processed meats.

When you add grape to a vape, you are simply adding flavour to it. Although, the flavouring is designed to be ingested and not inhaled, so it can be harmful to the lungs, just like smoking is. The real question is, which of them causes the dreaded “popcorn lung”?

    Popcorn Lung

It sounds silly and strange, but popcorn lung is a serious lung disease caused by diacetyl, a flavouring chemical found in foods like popcorn. This flavouring is also found in some vape juices. When you inhale vape smoke deeply, you’re allowing diacetyl to attack your lungs directly. This results in coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and, potentially, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

Black lung and the bottom line

Turns out vaping is bad for you, but it’s still the lesser evil when it comes to smoking. Smoking ciggies is worse for you since your body is exposed to more harmful, cancer-causing chemicals. Although vaping can give you popcorn lung, cigs can give you “black lung” (lungs that are black instead of pink), which can ultimately lead to you suffocating to death. Although popcorn lung is irreversible, vaping has comparatively more benefits than smoking does.

Anyways, if you are planning to quit smoking completely, we’re in full support and we’ll reduce your life insurance premiums. Find out more here.

  • GO GREEN, COUCH POTATO

    GO GREEN, COUCH POTATO

It’s finally Saturday! You’ve caught up on your beauty sleep, made a family brekkie, maybe dropped the kids at a birthday party, and now there’s time to kill before the kiddos return to home base. What to do now? The couch is staring at you with its voluptuous curves and suddenly a glimpse of Altered Carbon catches your eye on the screen. One thing leads to another and before you know it, you’re on top of the sofa and glued to the telly.

    3 hours later…

The kids return home and you feel guilty. Not about eating an entire sleeve of Oreos by yourself, but about binge-watching a series instead of grabbing a coffee or a beer and catching up with the gang. Stop feeling guilty! It’s okay to be a couch panini sometimes…

What’s green about watching series at home?

Studies recorded in Joule, an online American journal of research and analysis on energy and sustainability, show that spending time on your couch uses far less energy than leaving home in search of entertainment.

We must give digital technology the cred here. Thanks to its advances, we can shop online and watch Netflix on demand without leaving the house. We don’t have to drive to the mall and have our 4-wheel baby’s gasses dirty the atmosphere. Spending more time at home gives us a chance to change our homes into eco-havens. This is great for our pockets and the planet.

5 Ways to make your home cinema more energy efficient

    1. Buy ENERGY STAR products

ENERGY STAR products save energy without sacrificing features or functionality. Look out for the ENERGY STAR label on electronic devices like TVs and computers. These appliances use less electricity than products without the label do, which means that you save money on your monthly bills.

Buy an ENERGY STAR TV for your home cinema for a guilt-free and greener lifestyle. You’ll save up to 27% more energy without compromising on quality. TVs are available in ultra-high-definition (UHD) with internet connectivity.

How much moola do you save?

A home with ENERGY STAR TVs, set-top boxes, Blu-Ray players, and soundbars, can save nearly R2000 every 2 years.

    1. Pull the plug

Want to take a nap while New Girl is on? Switch all your devices off and unplug them before you go into snooze-mode. TVs and stereos still use 10 – 60% of power on standby. Smart Boxes cost nearly as much to run in standby mode as when they are switched on!

Use a power strip for your home cinema to easily turn multiple devices on and off in one go and unplug all your devices when you’re not using them or are away from home.

    1. Switch devices

Laptops generally use less power than television screens do. If you’re just chilling alone at home, consider series binging on a fully-charged laptop. Not a huge laptop fan? Consider a 42-inch LED TV instead of a 50-inch UHD TV. Remember: The bigger the TV, the bigger the electricity bill.

In general LED screens use less energy than UHD TVs. If bigger is better and you want to feel like you’re sitting in a VIP movie theatre, you need to change a few settings for a greener lifestyle.

    5 Green TV Settings

    • Lower your screen’s brightness.
    • Set your theme to a darker colour.
    • Select an energy-saving mode.
    • Turn off your telly if there’s no audience.
    • Unplug your devices when you’re away.

    1. Dim the lights

Bright lights are for board-games and other night-time activities. You don’t need (and mostly don’t want) to feel like you’re in the spotlight when an episode of Grey’s Anatomy gives you red cheeks and swollen eyes.

Install a dimming light controller and change the brightness of your living room with just the touch of a button. You’ll save 20% more power while your emotions run wild. Together with the dimming action, LED and fluorescent bulbs don’t need to be changed as often as halogen bulbs.

    Did you know?

Lighting counts for about 20% of an electricity bill in the average home. Dimming lights just 25% saves 20% in energy usage. Replacing a standard light switch with a dimmer can save up to R400 a year.

    1. Switch sound

Add a sound damper to your sound system. It will reduce echo, vibrations, and enhance listening quality. This device makes the sound of your favourite movies clearer at a lower volume and uses less energy. It’s literally music to your ears.

Tip: Download Decibel X on your Android or iOS device to find out if your volume is too loud.  The highly-rated app is free and can calculate sound levels. It has a standard measurement range from 30 to 130db.

Go ahead, jump into that bamboo-fibre panda onesie and enjoy your green movie marathon!

    Happy earth, happy life.

Pssst! Check out the top shows on Netflix here

  • DINING ON DOG – OLYMPIC ATHLETE ACTIVISTS SAY NO

DINING ON DOG – OLYMPIC ATHLETE ACTIVISTS SAY NO

Thousands of spectators visited PyeongChang for the Winter Olympics. Crowds were cheering, athletes got high on electrolytes and clouds of adrenaline draped over the ice rinks and snow-covered landscapes of the majestic town in South Korea. The views were good enough to capture in a snow globe and the entertainment was top-of-the-slope.

Beneath the snow glazing, however, lies what some may frown-upon. Metres away from the Olympic Games events, thousands of dogs are slaughtered for human consumption every month. According to the Humane Society International, a shocking 2.5 million South Korean dogs are killed for cooking every year. Although eating dog meat is not against the law in South Korea or in many parts of Asia, it snowballs the anger of dog-lovers and animal activists across the globe.

So, why do some South Koreans eat dog meat?

In South Korean culture it’s part of their tradition. It’s like eating a beef steak for a Westener…it’s normal and part of everyday life.*South Koreans don’t usually keep dogs as pets and that’s part of the reason why they don’t really think it’s wrong to dish a dog up for dinner. There’s also a belief that dog meat is beneficial because it boosts energy and heats you up during chilly days.

*Korea has Westernised over the years and lots of modern South Koreans keep dogs as pets and don’t believe in serving them for dinner. It’s taboo to even mention “gaegogi” in some Korean families.

What’s being done about the dog-killing?

The South Korean government is on the situation like a snow mobile. They’re moving steady and every gear-change brings them closer to a more conscientious republic. Unfortunately, the ride hasn’t been smooth so far and the slopes they’re on are slippery ones.

The South Korean Government is aware of many foreigners’ distaste of having pooches on dinner plates and they’ve taken measures to limit it. Officials offered restaurants 2 million won (around R22 000) to remove dog meat from their menus before the start of the Olympic Games. Only two restaurants welcomed the won but lost business from it. The bribery was clearly not enough to stop the South Korean cooks from boiling “gaegogi”.

Despite its government’s efforts and the global public’s protests and petitions to boycott the Winter Olympics, not much has changed, but the public knows more about the dog slaughtering now. More than 1 million dog-lovers have signed a petition to stop dog-meat farming. The petition is driven by the Soi Dog Foundation which respectfully requests the Government of South Korea to take all the necessary steps to ban the dog-meat trade in the region.  This includes declassifying dogs as livestock in the Enforcement Rule of the Livestock Industry Act.

Some Olympic athletes also fought against dog meat consumption in PyeongChang. They used media to make their voices heard.

Olympic figure skater Meagan Duhamel of Canada rescued Moo-tae, her four-legged friend, from South Korea in 2017, and during the 2018 Winter Games she planned to save more pups from ending up in pots and on plates. Duhamel told CNN, “Any meat farming is wrong, whether it’s cows, pigs or dogs. Of course, in our culture in North America, slaughtering and eating dogs is so far from our reality. We see dogs as companions and man’s best friend. We can’t imagine anything bad happening to our beloved pets.”

Duhamel hopes that all the dog meat farms will shut down and that the slaughtering will end soon.

Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy would also like to see the South Korean farms shut down. He told CNN, “I’m going to focus on my sport, and while I’m there, I’d love to try and raise awareness for the dogs. … I would love to bring a dog back.”

The voices of the athletes, the 1 million-plus petition signatures together with the publicity gained by The Olympics started an animal rights snowstorm which is now starting to blow the sensitive subject open. Resulting, potentially, in an end to dog meat on chopsticks.

The Winter Olympics was not only an economic boost, it was also an event with global coverage that could end the serving of dog meat in restaurants.

Do you think eating dog meat is wrong?

Here’s what you can do to stop it:

There are many actions you can take to help stop the dog-meat trade. It’s most important to educate yourself and others. Dog meat is a risky food and most people are not aware of the dangers of eating it. Diseases like Rabies and other bacteria can be spread during slaughtering and after ingestion. After you’ve educated yourself, educate others and get involved.

  • WATER CRISIS? EXTREME TIPS FOR EXTREME TIMES

WATER CRISIS? EXTREME TIPS FOR EXTREME TIMES

Human impact is altering weather patterns and bringing water-scarce Western Cape full circle. Are you concerned about your water consumption? Maybe you’re suffering level six water restrictions like 4,3 million others in the Mother City. Our extreme hacks and serious suggestions can help keep hope afloat. Remember: you are not alone and you are not a victim.

You ARE living through a challenging time, and that calls for resilience and innovation. If it doesn’t rain soon, Cape Town’s restrictions are going to seem like a luxury and Main Road might have to be renamed “Fury Road”. “Day Zero” pegged at 11 May 2018 at the time of publishing and subject to change, is when the water will be switched off and every person allotted a maximum of just 25 liters of municipal water (for everything) per day. Quite apart from developing the patience that makes queuing for rations with 200 000 other people at a time possible, residents will be forced to learn how to drastically save more and use less water. They’re not the same thing, you see.

To harmonize the hum of dry alarm that makes the usual lists completely redundant, we asked around and compiled a list of extreme water hacks to help you cope. As the climate becomes increasingly unpredictable, we encourage everyone to try these, whether it’s in Cape Town or it’s pouring down. Weather patterns and water supply are no longer guaranteed; your needing water to survive and thrive very much IS.

    Extreme Water Hacks

    Use less water

    In the bathroom

    • Use germ-killing hand sanitiser to clean your hands.
    • If you must wash your hands with water – actually, you must – use liquid hand-soap to make it easier to lather without water. That way you only use water to rinse.
    • Use biodegradable soaps – they are easier on the greywater you’re going to repurpose and they rinse off more quickly, too.
    • Skip body washes with a few, well-placed, biodegradable wet wipes (the other ones poison the earth).
    • Ditch the shower. Wash with a basin and a bakkie (decanter). A good ratio is 1 kettle hot and 2 cold depending on your comfort requirements. The least we’ve used for the entire body, including long hair, is 3 liters. 5 liters is more comfortable. You can lather up the same way you would with the liquid hand-soap.
    • If you must shower, stand in a big basin. This will catch the water while it warms up and the water you use. Just remember, depending on the water pressure, that’s 15 liters per minute…! and re-use the grey water for flushing and car washing.

    Use less water

    In the kitchen.

    • Wash your dishes in one go (not lots of little ones. Saves eco-dishwashing liquid, too)
    • Wash dishes in a tub (not under running water)
    • Re-purpose all water used for cooking and rinsing perishables into pot plants/garden. Must use non-toxic cleaner, though.
    • Use vinegar and bicarbonate of soda as cleaning products. They’re greywater friendly
    • Don’t pour fat from frying pans etc down the drain – they’ll clog it.

    Use less water

    In the toilet. Oh wait.

      • No flush toilets from Day Zero. Practise these in the meanwhile:
      • Water your plants with wee, they love it.

TIP: spread it out because, although it’s sterile, it smells when concentrated. You don’t want to know.

    • Buy a no-flush loo or build a compost toilet. The organic farmers can advise.
    • If you can’t afford a readymade water-free loo – or don’t know anyone to build you a long-drop out back. Just kidding. Or maybe not – improvise with a DIY no-flush loo. A pool noodle around the rim of a bucket lined with an airtight lid and the correct enzymes to control bacteria. Remove the noodle when finished and close the bucket for hygiene. Empty it regularly with someone producing humanure. Yes, you read right.

    Use less water

    In general

    • Wear hardy trousers and shorts twice or even thrice (for exercise if they’re soiled)

TIP: hand wash single-wear items like underwear.

    • Swim in oceans and rivers more to stay cleaner for longer without washing. Deodorant also helps.
    • Stockpile drinking water (from retail suppliers, not from the municipality – you can be fined) and keep it far away from heat or the sun. Remember to account for your pets, too!
    • Get large, 5L jerry cans with a tap for drinking water. If you can’t afford metal, get the plastic ones without BPAs and all the other acronyms.
    • If you’re unusually sensitive to chemicals, it’s worth storing your drinking water in glass decanters with taps or bottles with lids. Re-used whiskey and wine bottles work wonders. Just rinse them out properly! If you get plastic ones, turn them into eco-bricks when they’re empty.
    • Drink less coffee, eat fewer sugary drinks and go slow on the salty snacks. They all make you thirstier than normal.

    What about the animals?

    • Empty old water in pet bowls onto your plants/into your toilet cistern.
    • Stockpile drinking water for homeless animals. Animal relief groups and shelters will need support. Thank you for this thoughtful post, Herman!

    Save more water

    Catch and keep rainwater.

Lots of water simply runs over the surface of the ground and down drains and is lost forever.

    • You can do so much with harvested rainwater – water your veggie garden, clean your clothes and linen, wash your body, hair and car, use in cooking and cleaning.
    • It can be active (store in a tank) or passive (redirect to garden); simple (putting a big bucket on the balcony or a funnel in the garden) or advanced (redirecting your gutter water to a tank or empty pool).

TIP: Keep your gutters clean and lids on to avoid blockage and bacteria

WARNING: Don’t drink, cook with or rinse fresh produce using rainwater without checking and treating it properly. Otherwise, cholera, anyone?

    Save more water

    Install a greywater system.

A good greywater system is an investment, not an expense, for you as well as for mother nature.

    • Installing a long-term solution lets you re-use your household’s water waste.
    • And even if you don’t treat and repurpose the water for re-use inside, you can keep your garden lush and help replenish the water table outside.
    • Swales can capture and direct rainwater to create a lush wetland in your garden, no hose required.

Save more water / Use less water

    Help your neighbours.

If you are curious about others’ hacks, or if it comes to queues (Cape Town), you are not alone.

    • Share knowledge and work together.
    • Check with your community and see who needs help.
    • Making new friends through generosity and consideration goes a long way to creating a sense of goodwill and positivity at a challenging time and this applies outside of #thinkwater crises too.
    • You never know, Jo, there might be a day when you can’t make it to the pickup point.

    More here

Good to get going? If you’re in Cape Town, keep your eye on the city’s progress here and get water updates here. Good news, for now, is that the drought levy (water tax) is probably going to be shelved. Thanks for that, Pat. Now, how about finishing those desalination plants so that we don’t suck the aquifers dry?
