Whether it’s a neglected pet, an overworked horse, or an animal caught up in organised cruelty, someone has to answer the call.
For Senior Inspector Arno de Klerk and the National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) Special Projects Unit, that’s simply part of the job.
Every month, De Klerk and his team travel across South Africa investigating some of the country’s most complex animal welfare cases. Their work ranges from monitoring live animal transport and inspecting security dog facilities to investigating organised cruelty and supporting criminal prosecutions.
It’s demanding work. It’s often emotionally challenging. And it’s work that many people don’t realise is made possible almost entirely through public support.

Meet the NSPCA Inspector Protecting South Africa’s Animals
After more than 12 years with the NSPCA and nearly 18 years in the SPCA movement, De Klerk still approaches every investigation with the same purpose that first inspired him to join.
As a child, he watched animal rescue programmes and knew he wanted to make a difference for animals that had no one else to fight for them.
Today, that passion drives a team responsible for tackling some of the country’s most specialised animal welfare investigations.
Behind every successful rescue or prosecution are countless hours of travel, inspections, evidence gathering, and collaboration.
It isn’t always easy work, but for De Klerk and his colleagues, changing the outcome for even one animal makes every challenge worthwhile.

Closing the NSPCA Funding Gap
One of the biggest misconceptions about the NSPCA is that it receives government funding.
Like SPCAs across the country, the NSPCA relies on generous individuals and corporate donors to continue its vital work.
According to the NSPCA, less than 2% of South Africa’s corporate social investment (CSI) spend goes towards animal welfare. Yet those limited resources fund the rescue operations and legal action that help protect animals across all nine provinces.

A Shared Responsibility
At Dotsure, we’ve always believed that caring for pets means caring for the people and organisations who dedicate their lives to protecting them, too.
As South Africa’s leading pet insurer, we know just how much animals enrich our lives. Supporting the NSPCA is another way we can help create Soft Landings and brighter futures for animals beyond pet insurance.
We’re honoured to be the main sponsor of this year’s NSPCA charity golf day, returning after a 10-year break as an opportunity for businesses, golfers, and animal lovers to come together for a truly worthwhile cause.
Whether it’s entering a fourball, sponsoring a hole, or contributing a prize, every act of generosity helps strengthen the organisation’s ability to continue its life-changing work.
Join us at the Benoni Country Club on the 20th of August 2026 (fourball registration closes on the 6th of August).
We’d love to see you there!
