  • SAVE MONEY WITH THESE TAX RETURN TIPS!

SAVE MONEY WITH THESE TAX RETURN TIPS!

It’s tax season and if you’re a salted taxpayer, you know that submitting your returns could end you up with a nice cash bonus, but do you see dollar signs when you get your cash back notification? Do you think of the long-awaited holiday you never had money for and the renovations you’ve been meaning to make?

So are we to spend or are we to save? Here are 5 things to do with your return.

    Pay down a credit card

Did you know that according to the National Credit Regulator, over 39% of South African credit consumers have their credit card accounts overdue due to not being able to make their monthly payments? Not only does your credit score take a huge knock, but your blood pressure rises to unhealthy levels.

That’s why this is the perfect opportunity to use your returns as a down payment on your credit card. In the long run this could free up some budget to spend on wise things like long term investments and health care.

For more information on how to reduce your credit card debt, click here!

    Save for a rainy day

You’ve heard this many times, but it’s surprising how few people actually save for emergencies – it’s much easier to swipe the credit card or take out a loan from the bank.

These days there are so many options in terms of saving. Starting with a simple savings account such as a 30 day account to restrict yourself from simply drawing the cash for everyday use can come in handy. Talk to your financial advisor or bank to provide you with the best options for your savings needs.

You will thank yourself when an emergency arises! Here are some of the more popular choices:

    ABSA Save or Invest

    Capitec Global Plan

    Standard Bank Savings and Investments

    Nedbank 32 day account

    Down payment for your wheels

You need a good set of wheels. Sure, it’s a big expense, but the good news is that putting a down payment on your vehicle finance can save you on interest charges for the period taken and could even shorten the payment period.

Speak to your Finance House regarding the options for a down-payment and how it will affect your rates.

Also remember to keep your insurance updated to cover for any shortfall in the event of a loss.

    Long term investment savings

Technically this counts as a saving as well as a spending, but sometimes you have to spend now to save in the long run! Using your tax returns for long term investments could potentially benefit you by making your money work for you.

Investing in property, bonds, stocks, real-estate or other long-term investment options with your tax returns will not only give you extra income, but could provide you with financial security for your future goals – whether this is an early retirement or a house on shore.

Keep bucks aside for life insurance

This might be one of the most overlooked spending items as many people don’t quite grasp the importance of making provision for an unfortunate end. Although most people are wanting to believe that death only comes with old age, unfortunately the reality is that it can happen at any time, which could leave you unprepared financially to take care of your family’s needs when you are no longer there.

  • 5 BEST TIPS FOR TINDER TO TRY TODAY!

5 BEST TIPS FOR TINDER TO TRY TODAY!

So, you’re on Tinder to find love or something a little more than friendship? Still, you often end up without a match, third-wheeling with couples or eating microwaved dinners for one. Hate to break it to you, but you need some TLC (Tinder Loving Care).

We have some brilliant tips to get those Tinder matches multiplying. No need to uninstall the dating app just yet.

After reading this, you’ll be the kings and queens of online dating.

The basics – how to Tinder

    • Download Tinder for Android or Apple
    • Open the dating app and register.
    • Add a great photo of yourself.
    • Tweak your settings – location, notifications, match range, etc.
    • Write a short and sweet bio about yourself. Add more photos.
    • Start looking at others’ profiles. Swipe right if you’re interested.
    • Wait for a match (when they swipe right on YOU) and start chatting…
    • Go on a coffee date in a safe, public place.
    • Viola! Love is blooming.

    Try these 5 Tinder Tips!

    1. Firstly, get a bio, bro!

A Tinder profile without a bio is like a book without ink. It’s useless and unappealing. You need to approach your Tinder bio like you do your profile picture. Always look your best and take time to get it right. Write about the things you’re passionate about and express your personality. It might not seem sincere on a screen, but you stand a chance of meeting your match.

    Tinder bio no-no’s

    • Always be respectful. Sure, they’re strangers, but it’s a small world…
    • Be yourself but represent yourself, too. You are looking for romance, after all.
    • Writing a long bio is a definite fail. Keep it short and sweet. Imagine it’s a tweet.
    • Don’t make spelling and grammar errors. It’ll make you seem less intelligent or attentive than you are.

       2.Flaunt your face

Your face is your trademark. Nobody wants to date Casper the friendly ghost. You need a picture of your face and at least two other shots to get someone to swipe right. Keep the photos friendly and cut back on the filters. Narcissistic nitwits expose themselves in other ways, too; not so nice when we haven’t even met. Keep things sassy but classy.

Please note: Blurry and poorly-cropped images will kill your Tinder performance. Keep them fresh and in focus. If you feel awkward in front of the camera, take a selfie with your pup or kit cat – it’ll feel more natural and make you smile for real. You might even score some Superlikes.

    Tinder Win

    1. Make the settings work for you

Okay, you’ve got the bio and pics right. What about your profile settings? Make sure the settings and notifications are on point, otherwise you’ll be wasting precious dating time.

To change your notifications, tap the profile icon at the top of the main screen, go to Settings and then to Notifications. To edit other settings, head into the Settings menu to choose your preferences. Select your gender, proximity to potential matches and partner’s preferred age range. You’ll need to allow the app to see your phone’s location.

From there you can pick which gender you’re after. You can even choose both if you feel like it.

Hint: If you want more setting options – download Tinder Gold for about R50 per month. You can control who sees you and undo swipes.

    1. Learn to speak the language of LOVE

Even if you’ve got an awesome bio on the chat app and your pics are good enough to feature on the cover of a magazine, if you suck at communicating, you might as well let the Tinder flame die.

Your chats need to spell LOVE.

    L – Legit

You need to seem legit. That’s why the over-filtered pics and scripted bios are a no-go. Your messages need to flow freely and you want to express your personality accurately.  Would you (really) say something like, “Yass, you’re giving me the feels, but soz I need to bounce”?

    O – Ongoing

Active users communicate daily. Conversations build trust. Try to think differently here. Opening with a winking face is out, and asking, “how are you?” is boring. If you want to open a chat with a question, rather go with something that’s buzzing on social media.

    V – Vigilant

Watch out for fakes. You might be chatting to a catfish. Facebook-stalk your matches if you must. Look at their friends, location and recent posts. Real people, real possibility of a great date. Having fewer than 50 friends on Facebook isn’t normal. #justsaying

    E – Entertaining

Use humour, GIFs and images when you exchange messages. Remember that there are hundreds of people on Tinder. You need to stand out from the hormonal mass.

    1. Your date awaits!

If you’ve mastered the art of the 4 points above, you’re on your way to a romantic dinner with a stranger. Although it’s not technically a blind date, it can be rather awkward since you’ve probably never met the person before. Relax, be yourself, and if all else fails, there’s always a new smile waiting for a right-swipe.

Your future husband/wife/life partner might be just a tap or two away. Go work your magic, Cupido!

  • READ THIS IF YOU DRIVE A POLO

READ THIS IF YOU DRIVE A POLO

    YOLO, Polo!

We love the Volkswagen Polo, right? It’s sexy and drives like a dream on the open road. It’s no surprise that the Polo is one of South Africa’s best-selling vehicles. In 2017, more than 20 000 brand-new Polos were bought. The 2018 numbers are blowing up due to the facelift, interior options and new engine sizes. It’s no longer just a car, it’s a lifestyle and the image of perfection.

    Uh oh…

Although it’s got the looks, there is a glitch in the 2018 model’s safety features. The new Polo’s rear left seatbelt has a technical problem. In some situations, for example during a fast lane change test (with five passengers inside the roadster), two seatbelt buckles can press against one another, causing the lock of the outer left seat to pop open by accident. This puts the left passenger in dire danger as they will be travelling without a seatbelt if it unclips.

As a result of the faulty seatbelts, Volkswagen has announced an international recall on over 220 000 new 2018 model Polos. SEAT Ibiza and Arona, are also affected by the defective seatbelts and new models of these vehicles will also be recalled.

…there’s a solution waiting for you.

“At Volkswagen, safety remains a main priority,” says Volkswagen, Germany. “The brand has identified a technical solution: a redesigned belt-lock fixture which will prevent this from happening.” Customers will receive a letter advising them to make an appointment with a Volkswagen service partner. The check, as well as the implementation of the redesigned belt-lock fixture, will be free of charge.

Not sure if your new Polo is affected? Please contact Volkswagen South Africa.

    Back on the road

Don’t worry, you’ll be safe once your baby’s belts are fixed. Remember, nobody’s (car) is perfect. Face the flaws and keep your Polo in tip-top shape.

  • SOS: WHAT TO DO IF YOUR CAR HITS A POOCH

SOS: WHAT TO DO IF YOUR CAR HITS A POOCH

You’re driving home after a long day at the office and suddenly you and a furry-friend cross paths and you slam on the breaks. In the blink of an eye you find yourself shivering with shock. The dog is lying on the side of the road in distress as you realise that you hit the poor pooch. What now?

Before you panic, act. The injured dog needs attention, and her humans need to know, too; your next steps make all the difference in this dreaded situation.  Follow these guidelines from dotsure.co.za and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA):

    1. Try to stay calm

    • We’re talking actual calm. Take a few deep breaths and have a sip of water (you keep fresh water in the car, right?).
    • Once you’re more relaxed, you’ll think more clearly and be less likely to make mistakes that could end a helpless dog’s life.

    1. Call the DOG-ter
    • Before calling, check if the injured animal is still breathing. The chest should expand between 12 and 24 times per minute (count the number of breaths in 10 seconds and multiply it by 6 to get a per-minute estimate).
    • Don’t assume the dog is dead if you can’t see obvious signs of life – that’s a job for a medical professional and that’s where you have to go. Now.
    • You’ve got a local vet’s 24-hour emergency number on speed dial, right?
    • Give the vet a call ASAP. Warn them that you’re on your way with the injured animal. This way, they will be able to assist you immediately on arrival.
    • Tell the vet what’s wrong with the pet, for example a broken leg or a bleeding nose etc. If you can tell that the dog is still breathing, and its breathing rate (see above), tell the vet.

    AND

    Call the owner

    • If it’s not your fur-ball that’s injured, check the dog’s name tag for a number.
    • Call the owner to inform them of the accident and ask them to meet you at the vet.
    • No number? Ask the residents of the nearest house, if there is one within yelling distance. Leave the vet’s number with someone if you can.
    • Don’t wait around for the hound’s mom or dad to arrive at the scene of the accident. Death doesn’t come at convenient times, so hurry!

    1. TLC the pet
    • The wounded one might be in pain and shock. Watch out for aggressive behaviour.
    • Make sure you handle the dog gently.
    • Wrap a blanket or car seat cover around the pooch, and keep her mouth and nose exposed.
    • If a wound is bleeding, apply pressure to it and try to bandage it with a sock or piece of clothing. Nothing in the car? Use something you’re wearing.
    • Try to keep the dog as still as possible. Severe movement could cause more damage to limbs or internal organs.
    • Don’t give the doggo any medication, food or liquids (not even water). Giving it to them here could complicate life-saving treatment at the vet.
    • If the dog is having trouble breathing, remove her collar, open her mouth and check her airway for any obstructions. Just be careful of bites.

    1. Get to a vet
    • Don’t drive irresponsibly on your way to the vet. You could add to the injury if her body is moved by the motion of the car.
    • Put your hazard lights on to indicate an emergency; considerate drivers will give way to you.
    • Once you’ve arrived safely at the vet, keep reassuring the dog in low tones, even if you don’t know the gal.
    • Stay with her for as long as possible. She and her human will appreciate it.

    1. Make a claim – you’ve got this!
    • Vet bills can be costly. If it’s your own dog you hit by accident, and she’s already covered by dotsure.co.za, you can claim on her medical expenses for the incident.
    • If you’re not the owner of the injured pet, we hope you can find the legal guardianThey might have pet insurance.
    • Insurance terms can be confusing, so just to be clear, our liability cover is for incidents caused by your insured

  • ECO-FRIENDLY GOODIES AND GIFTS FOR PETS

ECO-FRIENDLY GOODIES AND GIFTS FOR PETS

Time for a treat? If you’d like to spoil Spot and Sushi but you’re worried about the impact the products may have on the environment, or you just prefer to do things more naturally, you’re not alone.  Climate change is real and pet lovers are becoming more aware of their impact on nature. Good news is it’s entirely possible to be an animal lover and an earth guardian at the same time.

The trick to it is to make more responsible choices for mother nature and your fur babies. Ethical eco-products use organic ingredients, sustainably-produced materials, and reduce waste and energy consumption in the production line. We’ve got a few suggestions for you.

Treats for animals with an appetite

    Birds

Wild bird seed bells will treat hungry birds in your garden and bring more birdsong to your windowsill. Not for homes with cats…!

    Cats

Plant heirloom non-GMO, heirloom catnip seeds to grow more furry purrs.
Cat bowls made with byproducts of rice production mean less waste and more yum.

    Dogs

An ant-beater pet bowl means fewer refills. No more water-waste antics.
These’s dog bowls use plant fibre from sustainably-produced bamboo.
Yep, get delicious, wheat-free dog biscuits right here.

    Keeping them clean (and comfortable)

Here’s a squeaky clean, natural pet shampoo that won’t wash away your flea and tick treatment.
Speaking of which, pest powder with diatomaceous earth is a safe way to eradicate the pests that love pets.
    Wellness support, naturally

Natural immune booster offers great support for your pet’s natural defences.
Help your pet relax with this earthy remedy to motion sickness, fear, shock and stress.
Spot got stinky breath? Natural ingredients will make licks delicious again.
Probiotics for pets? Yup! This one’s all-natural, too.
    Eco hygiene for kitties
Clean the tray and clear your green guilt in one scoop using an environmentally responsible litter tray and litter scoop.
How about some environmentally-friendly litter to go in it? Here’s one made with the leftovers of soymilk production.

    Green doggie-do

Plastic is causing a stink with environmentally conscious consumers. Pick up Spot’s ‘gifts’ with a poop bag holder made from biodegradable, plant-fibre plastic.
You’ll need refills of these biodegradable poop bags.

    Strange smells

Enviro-easy air freshener is natural, antibacterial, and antifungal. Fresh scents make sense!

    Toys!

A variety of coconut fibre and cotton pet toys will give a natural thrill to playtime.

    If you do one thing…
Remember, the eco-friendliest pet is one that neither hunts nor reproduces. Cats with access to wild spaces are considered an invasive alien species by some. Cats and dogs can quickly have large litters that need love and new homes. You don’t want to be responsible for adding to the hundreds of thousands of unwanted animals that are put to sleep each year, or the millions of birds killed by cats (and dogs) each year.

Get a bell for your furry friends to warn your feathered friends that danger is near.
Have your cats and dogs neutered or spayed as soon as your vet says it’s appropriate.
Make sure you have a valid licence for your exotic pets.

    We’ll insure them all.

  • GET TO KNOW THE NEW MERCEDES BENZ X-CLASS BAKKIE

GET TO KNOW THE NEW MERCEDES BENZ X-CLASS BAKKIE

For cool farmers and hip tradespeople who love pickups, the Mercedes-Benz X-class is an upgrade, but don’t trade your SUV in just yet.

The new Mercedes-Benz X-class has launched. In reality, it’s not new, it’s more like a newer version of Navara with a Mercedes-Benz bend.

Like most leading car manufacturers, Merc interpreted the best and put a Benz on it. The X-Class pick-up truck could almost be the Nissan Navara incarnate, but the luxury car company applied its own touch and came up with a shiny, curvy … workhorse. This premium pick-up bakkie will take you off-road with a load in style. What a way to grab a gap in the automotive market. Is it good enough to keep it?

The orange beast above is the Navara; the blue baby below is the X-class bakkie – long, solid, and balanced. On closer inspection, this new model a mix of what works (Nissan) and what Merc wants a pick-up to be. One day.

It has the same wheelbase, ladder frame chassis, 2,3-litre Renault-developed turbo diesel engine, and switchable four-wheel-drive system as its Nissan inspiration. However, Mercedes-Benz tweaked the original design for better stability and a more comfortable ride. “Because it’s built on a ladder frame and has a solid rear axle,” Top Gear notes, “it’ll never match an SUV for comfort” but it is quiet up to 100km/hr (on 8l/100km) and “drives like there’s an extra layer of rubber in the suspension that’s soaking up punishment”. That’s great for bumpy country roads but probably overkill for a stylish trip to the shop.

Speaking of style, no shortage of Merc magic in the X-class. While the starter button and the gear-lever scream Nissan, Merc lovers won’t be lost. It carries the cherished front grille, quintessential columns, familiar central screen, renowned rotary control and cues the ‘Benz girls and boys have come to love and rely on. The x-shaped air vents are a nice touch, too. The interior cabin has a distinctly premium feel although the entry-level model does use Nissan’s scratchy plastic dashboard surfaces.  It’s refined (for a pick-up) but while Mercedes is aiming it at almost everyone with aspirations and a bit of a load to move, it might not be about to knock your sexy SUV off its tracks.

It doesn’t mind, though; it’s a tough baby and, at 163 or 190 horsepower, it sure knows how to work. It’ll carry up to 1,1 tonnes in weight. It will pull 3,5 tonnes. You know, your yacht or that new luxury tiny home you bought on impulse. The boot is huge at 1,2m by 1,6m. You know what they say about a big booty, eh? Sorry. Time to choose

    Choose between:

    • The X220d and X250d ranges
    • A 2,3-litre diesel engine with either 161 or 187bhp
    • A 6-speed manual or 7-speed auto gearbox
    • Pure, Progressive and Power trim levels

    Pay between:

    R642 103 (X220d 4×2 Progressive) and R818 340 (XZ250d 4×4 Power).

    Add-ons:

    • Roller covers and load liners – R38 000
    • Automatic gearbox – R28 000

    What to look forward to:

    • Merc plans to fit the 7cm longer track width with a V6 3L engine with permanent all-wheel drive later in the year.

Top Gear sums it up with sass:

Give it a long, slow look:

This guy gives a great review and takes it for a spin:

  • MOHAIR INDUSTRY SPINNING OUT OF CONTROL?

MOHAIR INDUSTRY SPINNING OUT OF CONTROL?

South Africans and international retailers have been shocked out of their mohair socks and jackets. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) Asia released a video containing footage of Angora goats being dragged, dropped and injured by farmworkers. The video spread like wildfire and mohair farmers are starting to feel the burn. Ouch!

PETA is threatening to shut down the mohair wool industry completely due to their shocking discovery. Yes, the mohair industry is hanging by a thread. Arcadia Group has stopped placing orders for mohair products across its eight top brands. Other big retailers like GAP, Banana Republic and ZARA will also stop using mohair by 2020. H&M however won’t wait to witness another gruesome goat slaughter – The global retailer will, effective immediately, remove the use of mohair from all their clothing ranges.

Okay, that’s great! Retailers are standing up for our fluffy friends. The solution however isn’t as simple as to stop supporting the mohair industry. Removing mohair from products might (or might not) stop animal abuse, but what about the consequences of 30 000 jobless South Africans? That’s what will happen if the mohair industry crashes?

The viral video is “totally misguided” according to Deon Saayman of the SAMGA (South African Mohair Growers Association).  “We have a Code of Production. That’s not how mohair is produced” says Deon. Gay van Hasselt, an Angora farmer from Prince Albert, agrees that the claims of widespread cruelty couldn’t be further from the truth. According to Hasselt many Angora farmers are passionate people that care deeply about their animals.

There are always two sides to a story and generalisation isn’t fair, but the fact that the horror short film exists can’t be overlooked blindly. PETA has made a few sensible (and sensational) comments about the shocking short clip. The influential animal organization reported that the video revealed some shocking footage of stressful and abusive shearing.  PETA says that they visited 12 Angora farms. The video however does not include footage from all 12 farms.

    The Verdict

Animal abuse is not okay! It’s a serious matter that needs to be investigated properly. The unravelling of the shocking video has brought a sensitive subject to light that will affect mohair farmers, workers, fashion brands and the South African economy. Hopefully the guilty parties will take ownership of their past mistakes and start treating their goats with respect, love and care. If the mohair industry spins off the wheel, there will be financial holes in many South African pockets and farms with empty sheds.

Retailers and outlets should be responsible and make sure that their mohair comes from a farm that treats their animals fairly. Large retailers shouldn’t completely remove mohair from their clothing ranges, but should be sure about the farms that supply them.

Thank you to the Angora farmers who do not tolerate animal abuse. To the rest – you’re gross. #stopanimalabuse

  • 10 WAYS TO KEEP YOUR PUP FROM FREEZING THIS WINTER

10 WAYS TO KEEP YOUR PUP FROM FREEZING THIS WINTER

Temperatures are dropping and coffee is overflowing. You’re switching from tank tops to sweaters and your pooches are tempted to dive into the blankets with you. Winter isn’t coming, it has already arrived! Are you prepared for the shivers and teeth chattering chills?

You might be ready to kick the cold to the curb, but what about your fur-kids? Sure, they’ve got coats to protect them from the cold, but they still need a little extra TLC.

Here are 10 ways you can help your barking bud beat the cold this winter season:

    1. Limit outdoor playtime

Make sure that you limit playtime to 30 minutes at a time. This will ensure that your dog doesn’t spend too much time out in the cold.

    1. Go on shorter walks

Make sure your pooch gets enough exercise, but limit walks to 15 minutes each. Rather walk with your pup twice a day (mornings and early evenings).

    1. Keep an eye on your doggo.

If your dog is showing signs of shivering, whining or trembling, heat them up with a fuzzy blanky or jersey.

    1. Don’t shave your dog!

Your hound is lucky enough to have a natural permanent jersey to keep him/her warm during icy days. Don’t remove their natural fur for aesthetic reasons.

    1. Wipe their paws

The freezing weather outside can make your pup’s paws wet and cold. Wipe Bailey’s paws with a dry towel before he enters the house. It’s won’t only help your pooch out, but also your floors and fancy furniture. Muddy dog paws can ruin your stylish beige sofa.

    1. Keep their tummies full

Dogs burn more calories during chilly days. Make sure they are well fed this winter.

    1. Let sleeping dogs lie

If your four-legged friend wants to snooze more, don’t force him to stand up. The winter weather steals energy and makes your poor bud feel tired. Don’t be jelly because your fur-friend gets to sleep in and you don’t. Let him drift off to dreamland.

    1. Grab an extra blanky

Grab a warm fuzzy blanket and put it in your dog’s bed. Make sure there is also a warm blanky on his favourite spot on the floor. Tiles and wooden floors can be chilly.

    1. Keep a first aid kit handy

Pets can injure themselves on wet surfaces. Keep bandages, antibiotic ointment and medication for accidents in a safe place in your home.

Also, keep the following in your first aid kit:

    -Earbuds

    -Non-alcoholic ear cleanser

-Vitamin supplements (especially vitamin C to fight flu)

    -Aloe Vera cream for bruises

    – Hydrogen Peroxide (For toxic indigestion)

    – Gauze, Scissors, Tape, Rubber Gloves

    – Vaccination & Medical Records

    1. Buy a comfy jersey

If your dog’s fur isn’t thick enough, make sure you give him a comfy jersey. Make sure that the jersey isn’t too tight (especially around the neck, legs tummy) or too loose.

Use the above tips and heat up winter with a little extra love and attention. Your pup will thank you for it by giving you endless snuggles and face-licks.

    Share your warmth this winter!

  • HOW TO USE YOUR 67 MINUTES THIS MANDELA DAY

HOW TO USE YOUR 67 MINUTES THIS MANDELA DAY

What’s the Mandela Day Buzz about?

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. Politician, philanthropist and President. Has history ever yielded a better beacon of compassion and selflessness? Perhaps not. Mandela Day honours his Batman-like heroism by allowing you to show-off your own hero-like qualities and give 67 minutes of compassion to a cause of your choice.

    Why 67 Minutes?

That’s a great question! It’s because Mr Mandela was in public service for 67 years. Each minute of goodwill represents a year of his public service lifespan. Let that soak in for a minute… 67 years.

So, would you like to be a Hero like Madiba and clear your guilty conscience?

Here are 3 easy ways to be a hero on Mandela Day

    1. Donate “kryptonite”

You can donate some life-giving blood. It will make you feel a little weak for a few minutes, but it can give others a lifetime of strength.

    How to share your blood

    • Make sure you are between the ages of 16-65, weigh more than 50 kg’s and have your Superman strength.
    • Find a SANBS Blood Donation Centre near you OR motivate your employer to host a blood drive at your offices for the convenience of all your sidekicks.
    • Eat a balanced meal 3-4 hours prior to donation. Remember-Even superheroes need to refuel.

    Did you know?

Every unit of blood can save up to THREE civilians! That means that you turn into a real-life superhero in less than an hour. How cool is that?

    1. Fly to your local SPCA

Use your flying powers and extra strength to play with the furry friends at the SPCA. Who knows, you might have the urge or wrap one in your cape and carry it to the safety of your own hideout.

How to carry your furry friends to safety?

    ADOPT-YOU save a life!

Animals in shelters are abandoned and left destitute by some serious villains. They were left to fight the battle between good and bad alone, wandering around in search of a sidekick and a life companion. You have the power to make their future better than their past. You can provide them with a haven and experience, in the process, benefit from their unconditional love and companionship.

  • THROWBACK TO YOUR FIRST PET

    THROWBACK TO YOUR FIRST PET

A first pet is like a first love…

Others may come, but you never forget the first furry faces you fell for.

You probably remember the major milestones in your life like your first kiss and your first proper job. What about your first pet?

You might relate to memories like this:

“Stoffel was an overweight Pomeranian who often pooped in obscure places.”

“Max couldn’t help himself! You opened a packet of biltong within 10 miles of him, and he was all over you!”

“Cleo used to curl up into a ball of fur and sleep in an underwear drawer.”

“Lilly always jumped over the fence to get a treat from the neighbours.”

Here are genuine first pet stories from BuzzFeed:

    Punto – the Nervous Doggo

“My family had a dog and two cats when I was born (winners, all!) but the first authentically NEW pet in my life was an Airedale terrier puppy named Punto. On the day we went to pick him up, we knew which one he was because of the ribbon around his neck. It was purple, a noble colour. He was very small and curly, and peed on my mom’s lap on the way home, which we all optimistically interpreted as an expression of his deep sense of comfort and belonging. We named him in honour of a previous fox terrier my mom had had as a kid. He grew up to be fairly large and unfailingly sweet. He was once tied by his leash to the leg a garden chair, at some point tried to get up and run after a tennis ball or something and was TERRIFIED to find that the chair was CHASING HIM. From that point on, he was always nervous around furniture, thunderstorms, and arguments. I loved him with all my heart.” —Rachel Sanders

    Two Cats for Christmas

“My parents told me and my brother we were getting a surprise Christmas present and hinted strongly that it was going to be going to see a play. My brother and I both dressed up in our little suits for the theatre, and we drove to the ‘play.’ My parents had us put on blindfolds, apparently so we wouldn’t know what play we were seeing until the last minute. Why I believed all this, I have no idea, but I did and was thus very surprised when I took off my blindfold to discover that we had in fact arrived at an animal shelter, where we met brother cats subsequently named Hodge and Alan, who would become my pride and joy and the lights of my life for the next 18 years. That one belongs right up there with the happiest days of my life.” Jack Shepherd

    The “Floating” Turtle

“My parents didn’t want to have a dog as long as we lived in an apartment. Much to their disappointment, my first word was ‘dog.’ They tried to avoid getting one by getting me other pets. When I was about 4 I had a turtle named Manuelita that lived in a fish tank during the week and we would take with us on weekend road trips. Manuelita was really smart; she would tap her head against the fish tank when she wanted to be walked. I remember my mom tying a red balloon to the turtle and letting her explore the ‘wild.’” Conz Preti

  • SMOKING VS VAPING – TAKE A DEEP BREATH

SMOKING VS VAPING – TAKE A DEEP BREATH

Do you enjoy daily smokes in the courtyard with your fellow smoky Joes and Janes? Sure, you do; it’s a communal ritual that makes you feel good. One taste of nicotine and you’re wrapped in a cloud. You sometimes try to escape, but keep crawling back to the comforting call of tobacco. Is that what it is…an addiction that’s been around for millennia.

More recently, Native Americans used it for medicinal purposes and soldiers smoked it to cope with the psychological after-effects of the American Civil War. It only started mainstreaming in 1881, though, when James Bonsack invented the first cigarette-making machine. It produced 120 000 cigs a day. Wow, give that man a Marlboro Gold! OR not…

Did you know? (You probably did)

There are over 20 cancer-causing chemicals in a ciggie. Here is a list of its toxic ingredients:

    Toxic Cigarette Ingredients:

    • Nicotine – Stimulates the nervous system and increases blood pressure.
    • Lead – Attacks the brain and central nervous system. This can cause comas, seizures and eventually death.
    • Arsenic – Large amounts can lead to cancer, liver disease, coma, and death.
    • Ammonia – Can cause coughing, nose and throat irritation, and mouth cancer.
    • Benzene – Causes anaemia and leukaemia (blood cancer).
    • Carbon Monoxide – Also known as the “silent killer”. The toxin can cause anaemia and respiratory problems.
    • Nitrosamines – Can lead to cancer.

Okay, let’s stop right there. Enough dissing cigarettes for now.  Let’s get to the vapes (e-cigarettes). Studies found that there are fewer chemicals in a vape than in a normal cigarette. What’s up with that? Does it mean vaping isn’t bad for your body’s built-in airbags?

     Vape Ingredients:

    • Nicotine – The addictive chemical. When people say they’re addicted to smoking, they’re dependant on nicotine.
    • Propylene Glycol (vegetable oil) – also known as e-juice, it keeps the vape’s liquid moist and the cartridge well-lubricated. It’s not a serious health risk but can cause damage to the lungs when inhaled.
    • Vegetable Glycerol – A non-toxic colourless liquid with a naturally sweet taste. When used in vape juice, it enhances the flavours and greatly improves vapour production!
    • Acetaldehyde – a colourless, flammable, non-toxic liquid used in the manufacture of acetic acid, perfumes, and flavours.
    • Nitrosamines – carcinogenic agents also found in cigarettes and processed meats.

When you add grape to a vape, you are simply adding flavour to it. Although, the flavouring is designed to be ingested and not inhaled, so it can be harmful to the lungs, just like smoking is. The real question is, which of them causes the dreaded “popcorn lung”?

    Popcorn Lung

It sounds silly and strange, but popcorn lung is a serious lung disease caused by diacetyl, a flavouring chemical found in foods like popcorn. This flavouring is also found in some vape juices. When you inhale vape smoke deeply, you’re allowing diacetyl to attack your lungs directly. This results in coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and, potentially, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

Black lung and the bottom line

Turns out vaping is bad for you, but it’s still the lesser evil when it comes to smoking. Smoking ciggies is worse for you since your body is exposed to more harmful, cancer-causing chemicals. Although vaping can give you popcorn lung, cigs can give you “black lung” (lungs that are black instead of pink), which can ultimately lead to you suffocating to death. Although popcorn lung is irreversible, vaping has comparatively more benefits than smoking does.

Anyways, if you are planning to quit smoking completely, we’re in full support and we’ll reduce your life insurance premiums. Find out more here.

  • BREAKING NEWS: IT’S DOTSURE.CO.ZA POLAR BEAR PLUNGE TIME AGAIN!

BREAKING NEWS: IT’S DOTSURE.CO.ZA POLAR BEAR PLUNGE TIME AGAIN!

On Saturday, 28 July 2018 the brave and caring Garden Route community will again flock to the icy shores of Victoria Bay, where they will plunge into the icy depths of the winter-chilled Indian ocean to take part in the annual dotsure.co.za Polar Bear Plunge, all in aid of a host of local and national charities.

This year, local businesses and teams will be competing to bring the biggest and most exuberant following to the shore in order to make sure that charities close to their hearts are the beneficiaries of the sponsored R20 000 purse. Each team that enters will consist of 10 members and bring with them, warm hearts, warmer blankets and the warmest smiles available anywhere.

In 2017, with the help of the local community, the event (which is essentially a blanket drive), managed to raise more than 700 blankets for those in need. This year, the target is set at a cool 1000! “Winter is a hard time of year and it’s easy to forget others struggling in the cold temperatures while we live in our cosy comforts. This is why we do this! We do it because we care, we do it to try and make South Africa a little better, by trying to help those less fortunate than ourselves.”, says David Roache, MD of dotsure.co.za.

For those who would prefer to keep their toes dry, the 2018 edition of the Plunge will also boast a sizzling line up of entertainment including some hot tracks laid down by former 5FM DJ, Catherine Grenfell. Participants and supporters can partake in activities like a brain freeze eating contest, water sports, a crazy fun kids’ corner and more. The nominated charities will also be present on the day and have stalls where they will educate the public on what they do and where they will also be selling goodies, in aid of charity.

dotsure.co.za challenges you to dress in your most exciting swimwear and brave the freezing winter waves to show your support for this very deserving cause. Invite all your friends and family members to take the plunge and to bring a blanket as your entry fee.

Businesses can contact dotsure.co.za at [email protected] for an entry form and other participants can register on the dotsure.co.za Facebook page.

Don’t be Chicken, be Polar Bear! It’s time to get freezin’ for a reason!

  • GO GREEN, COUCH POTATO

    GO GREEN, COUCH POTATO

It’s finally Saturday! You’ve caught up on your beauty sleep, made a family brekkie, maybe dropped the kids at a birthday party, and now there’s time to kill before the kiddos return to home base. What to do now? The couch is staring at you with its voluptuous curves and suddenly a glimpse of Altered Carbon catches your eye on the screen. One thing leads to another and before you know it, you’re on top of the sofa and glued to the telly.

    3 hours later…

The kids return home and you feel guilty. Not about eating an entire sleeve of Oreos by yourself, but about binge-watching a series instead of grabbing a coffee or a beer and catching up with the gang. Stop feeling guilty! It’s okay to be a couch panini sometimes…

What’s green about watching series at home?

Studies recorded in Joule, an online American journal of research and analysis on energy and sustainability, show that spending time on your couch uses far less energy than leaving home in search of entertainment.

We must give digital technology the cred here. Thanks to its advances, we can shop online and watch Netflix on demand without leaving the house. We don’t have to drive to the mall and have our 4-wheel baby’s gasses dirty the atmosphere. Spending more time at home gives us a chance to change our homes into eco-havens. This is great for our pockets and the planet.

5 Ways to make your home cinema more energy efficient

    1. Buy ENERGY STAR products

ENERGY STAR products save energy without sacrificing features or functionality. Look out for the ENERGY STAR label on electronic devices like TVs and computers. These appliances use less electricity than products without the label do, which means that you save money on your monthly bills.

Buy an ENERGY STAR TV for your home cinema for a guilt-free and greener lifestyle. You’ll save up to 27% more energy without compromising on quality. TVs are available in ultra-high-definition (UHD) with internet connectivity.

How much moola do you save?

A home with ENERGY STAR TVs, set-top boxes, Blu-Ray players, and soundbars, can save nearly R2000 every 2 years.

    1. Pull the plug

Want to take a nap while New Girl is on? Switch all your devices off and unplug them before you go into snooze-mode. TVs and stereos still use 10 – 60% of power on standby. Smart Boxes cost nearly as much to run in standby mode as when they are switched on!

Use a power strip for your home cinema to easily turn multiple devices on and off in one go and unplug all your devices when you’re not using them or are away from home.

    1. Switch devices

Laptops generally use less power than television screens do. If you’re just chilling alone at home, consider series binging on a fully-charged laptop. Not a huge laptop fan? Consider a 42-inch LED TV instead of a 50-inch UHD TV. Remember: The bigger the TV, the bigger the electricity bill.

In general LED screens use less energy than UHD TVs. If bigger is better and you want to feel like you’re sitting in a VIP movie theatre, you need to change a few settings for a greener lifestyle.

    5 Green TV Settings

    • Lower your screen’s brightness.
    • Set your theme to a darker colour.
    • Select an energy-saving mode.
    • Turn off your telly if there’s no audience.
    • Unplug your devices when you’re away.

    1. Dim the lights

Bright lights are for board-games and other night-time activities. You don’t need (and mostly don’t want) to feel like you’re in the spotlight when an episode of Grey’s Anatomy gives you red cheeks and swollen eyes.

Install a dimming light controller and change the brightness of your living room with just the touch of a button. You’ll save 20% more power while your emotions run wild. Together with the dimming action, LED and fluorescent bulbs don’t need to be changed as often as halogen bulbs.

    Did you know?

Lighting counts for about 20% of an electricity bill in the average home. Dimming lights just 25% saves 20% in energy usage. Replacing a standard light switch with a dimmer can save up to R400 a year.

    1. Switch sound

Add a sound damper to your sound system. It will reduce echo, vibrations, and enhance listening quality. This device makes the sound of your favourite movies clearer at a lower volume and uses less energy. It’s literally music to your ears.

Tip: Download Decibel X on your Android or iOS device to find out if your volume is too loud.  The highly-rated app is free and can calculate sound levels. It has a standard measurement range from 30 to 130db.

Go ahead, jump into that bamboo-fibre panda onesie and enjoy your green movie marathon!

    Happy earth, happy life.
